This invention relates to a garment structure, and relates more particularly to a pocket construction suitable for embodiment in trousers, and the like. It is a general object of the present invention to provide a practical and. effective pocket for carrying golf balls.

This application is a division of my application for Letters Patent entitled Garment, S. N. 647,882, filed December 19, 1932, issued May 30, 1933, Patent No. 1,912,327.

It is another object of the invention to provide an improved pocket adapted to carry or hold a plurality of golf balls that is such that the balls may be easily removed when desired.

It is another object of the invention to provide a garment having a pocket for holding golf balls that is constructed and positioned so that the golf balls within it do not inconvenience the wearer or interfere with his movements.

t is another object of the invention to provide a garment pocket of the character mentioned that is such that the golf balls may be easily removed individually or one at a time, and that carries the balls so that they cannot accidentally fall out of the pocket.

It is another object of the invention to provide a pocket construction for embodiment in a garment that is adapted to carry or hold a considerable number of golf balls without straining the garment and Without putting any appreciable pressure on the wearer.

It is another object of the invention to provide a pocket construction of the character mentioned that may be readily embodied in garments of various characters with only slight additions, modifications or changes.

It is another object of the invention to provide a pocket construction of the character mentioned in which the outlet opening through which the golf balls may be removed is located so as to be conveniently accessible to the wearer.

Other objects and features of the invention will be best and fully understood from the following detailed description of typical forms and applications of the invention, throughout which description reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which;

The improved pocket construction provided by the invention is capable of embodiment in forms for use in garments of various characters and is particularly adapted for use in golf trousers, knickers, and the like. Throughout the following detailed disclosure, I will describe the invention as embodied in a trouser-construction that may be worn as dress trousers with the leg portions of shoe top length or as knickers for golfing, or the like. As the present invention is not concerned with the means for converting the garment from dress trousers to knickerbockers, the following description will be confined to the improved pocket construction of the invention. It is to be understood that the invention is not to be construed as limited or restricted to the specific forms or applications about to be described, but is to be taken as including any features or modifications that may fall within the scope of the claims.

The form of the present invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive of the drawing, includes generally, the body 10 of the garment or trousers, and the pocket 11 for holding golf balls, or the like.

In the drawing the pocket construction provided by the'invention is illustrated as embodied in trousers that may normally be of full length for dress or street wear as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 6 of the drawing, or that may be worn as knickers as illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawing. The body 10 of the garment includes leg portions 13 and hip portions 14. When worn as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 6 of the drawing, the usual turned-up cuffs 15 on the lower ends of the leg portions 13 are apparent or visible. The Waist band 17 of the garment may be provided with the usual loops 18 for receiving a belt 19 and the trousers may be provided with side pockets 20.

The pocket 11 for carrying the golf balls is adapted to hold a plurality of golf balls and is such that the balls may be easily removed one at a time as required. In accordance with the invention, the pocket 11 may be provided on either the right hip or the left hip portions of the garment, depending upon whether the trousers are intended for a right handed or left handed wearer. In the particular case illustrated throughout the drawing, the pocket 11 is provided on the inner side of the right hip portion 14. of the trousers. The pocket 11 proper may be formed of suitable fabric, and in accordance with the broader aspects of the invention, may be secured or stitched to the body of the trousers in various manners. In the typical embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing, the upper inner portion 22 of the pocket 11 is secured to the body 10 of the trousers at the waist band 1'7.

A substantially horizontal slot or pocket opening 23 is provided in the hip portion 14 to communicate with the upper end part of the pocket 11. The pocket opening 23 may be spaced some distance below the waist band 17, and its ends may be reinforced by suitable stitching 2 The outer wall 25 of the pocket 11 may be stitched to the hip portion 14 of the trousers along the lower edge part of the pocket opening 23, and the interior of the pocket may be faced with fabric adjacent the opening 23 in the well known manner. The pocket 11 extends downwardly from the opening 23, and in accordance with the invention, its lower end portion is of reduced dimensions. The lower end portion of the pocket 11 is proportioned to hold or carry a single row of golf balls B, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. The invention provides means for securing the lower end part of the pocket 11 to the body 10 of the garment, and in the preferred construction illustrated in the drawing, the pocket extends downwardly and forwardly to the side seam 25. I'he lower end portion of the pocket 11 is secured to the body 10 of the garment along the side seam 25 in the manner indicated at 26 in Fig. 3 of the drawing. In accordance with the invention, the pocket 11 is formed to hold the golf balls so that they do not press against the wearer. The outer wall 95 of the pocket lining or pocket 11 is wider at the lower end portion of the pocket than the inner wall of the pocket providing considerable fullness which is taken in at the extreme lower end of the pocket at a tuck or plait 96.

The hip portion 14 of the garment is of sufficient fullness adjacent the pocket 11 to allow a reasonable number of golf balls 13 to be contained in the pocket without excessive bulging or distortion of the garment. In accordance with the preferred form of the invention, the piece of material of which the hip portion is formed is provided with a projecting portion '70 before the garment is tailored or made. When the garment is assembled or made the edge of the hip portion 14 is stitched to the body of the garment along the side seam 25 and the projecting portion provides substantial fullness that is worked the n p portion '70 adjacent the pocket 11. This fullness in the hip portion permits a considerable number of golf balls to be carried in the pocket without interfering with the wearers movements, and without distorting or straining the garment. The provision of the fullness 70 in the hip portion and the fullness in the pocket 11 prevents the golf balls 13 from pressing against the wearer with any appreciable force. The broken line 97 in Fig. 5 of the drawing illustrates the line along which the portion '70 is connected to the body of the garment at the seam 25.

The invention provides means whereby the golf balls B may be easily and quickly removed from the lower end of the pocket 11, which means such that the balls will not he accidentally dis placed or lost from the pocket, but must be intentionally removed. The extreme lower end 2'7 of the pocket 11 may be substantially horizontal or at right angles to the seam 25 and extends forwardly to join the seam. An opening 28 is provided in the garment to communicafe with the lower end portion of the pocket 11. In the form of the invention being described, the pocket opening 28 extends along the side seam 25, being provided in the hip portion 14 where it is connected with the body of the garment at the seam. The opening 28 is proportioned to permit one golf ball B to be removed from the pocket 11 at a time, and is positioned so that the golf balls cannot accidentally fall from the pocket.

In accordance with the invention, the lower end of the opening 28 is spaced above the bottom 2'? of the pocket l1 so that the lowermost golf ball B resting on the bottom of the pocket cannot accidentally fall out of the opening 28. As described above, the lower end portion of the pocket 11 is proportioned so that it is adapted to carry only a single row of golf balls B, and the opening 28 is positioned and proportioned so that the golf balls cannot become bunched or jammed in the lower end portion of the pocket or in the opening 28. Reinforcements 29 of stitching be provided at the upper and lower ends of the opening 28, while a row of stitching 30 may extend downwardly and rearwardly from the lower end of the opening 28 to reinforce the garment at this point. As the lower end portion of, the pocket 11 is stitched to the body 10 of the garment at the seam 25, it cannot work or pull away from the opening 28, and the golf balls B are maintained in a single substantially vertical pile or row, so that the lowermost golf ball may be readily pushed out of or removed from the opening 28. The wearer may readily remove the lowermost golf ball 13 from the pocket 11 by pressing upwardly and forwardly on the golf ball to force it out of the opening 28. If found desirable or practical, a releasable fastener may be provided to normally hold the opening 28 closed, however the formation of the pocket is such that a fastener is not essential.

In this particular form of the invention, the opening for removing the golf balls from the lower end of the pocket 11 is provided in the hip portion 145 of the garment, and communicates with the extreme lower end of the pocket 11. The opening for passing the golf balls from the pocket 11 is normally closed by a tab or flap 32 held in the closed position over the opening by a a button 33, or other suitable fastening means. The forward edge of the lower end portion of the pocket ll stitched or secured to the body of the garment at the line of stitching 25. The other parts and features of the pocket 11 may be identical with those of the pocket 11 described above. It will be apparent how th flap 3.2 may be released from the button 33 to permit the lowermost golf ball held in the pocket 11 to pass out of the opening in the bottom of the pocket.

rawing illustrates a pocket ll It is believed that the utility and practicability of the pocket construction will be readily apparent from the foregoing detailed description. The 130C119; construction is simple and inexpensive of manufacture, and may be readily embodied in the garment. Due to the configuration of the lower end portion of the pocket 11 and the location of the outlet 28, the golf balls are dependably held in the pocket and cannot be accidentally lost. As the opening 28 is spaced some distance above the lower end of the pocket 11, the lower-- most golf ball B rests on the bottom 27 of the pocket and has no tendency to pass out of the opening 28, and supports the other balls in the pocket in positions where they cannot fall through the opening. The person wearing the garment may easily withdraw or remove a single golf ball B from the pocket 11 by pressing forwardly and upwardly on the lowermost golf ball to cause it to pass outwardly through the opening 28. After the ball has been removed from the pocket the lowermost ball of the group of balls remaining in the pocket comes to rest on the bottom 27 of the pocket where it cannot fall outwardly through the opening 28 and where it supports the remainder of the balls so that they too are prevented from leaving the pocket. The fullness provided along the edge of the hip portion and the general construction of the pocket allows a considerable number of golf balls to be carried in the pocket without straining the garment and without inconveniencing t -e wearer.

Having described only a typical form and application of the invention, I do not wish to restrict myself to the form or application. described, but wish to reserve to myself any modifications or variations that may appear to those skilled the art or fall within the scope of the following claims.

Having described my invention, I claim:

1. A garnent of the character described including, a body having a hip portion and a leg portion joined by a seam, and a pocket on the inner side of the hip portion, there being an opening in the hip portion communicating with the upper end of the pocket, the lower portion of the pocket being connected to the garment at the seam, there being an opening along the seam communicating with the pocket, the lower end of the last mentioned opening being spaced above the bottom of the pocket.

2. A garment of the character described including, a body having a hip portion and a leg portion joined by a seam, and a pocket on the inner side of the hip portion, there being an opening in the hip portion communicating with the upper end of the pocket, the lower portion of the pocket being connected to the garment at the seam, there being an opening adjacent the seam and communicating with the lower end of t-e pocket and means normally preventing the discharge of objects from the last mentioned opening.

3. A garment of the character described ineluding, a body having a hip portion and a leg connected at a seam, and a pocket attached to the inner side of one of said body portions, the said portion having extra fullness along the seam adjacent the pocket, there being an opening in said portion communicating with the upper end of the pocket, the upper portion of the pocket being proportioned to hold a relatively large number of golf balls, the lower portion of the pocket bein of reduced capacity to hold a single substantially vertical row of balls, and means attaching the lower end part of the pocket to the garment at the seam, there being an opening in the garment extending along the seam and having lateral communication with the lower portion of the pocket a short distance above the lower end of the pocket.

5. A garment including, two body portions connected at a seam, and a pocket attached to the inner side of one of said body portions, the said portion having extra fullness along the seam adjacent the pocket, there being an opening in said portion communicating with the upper end of the pocket, the upper portion of the pocket being proportioned to hold a relatively large number of golf balls, the lower portion of the pocket being of reduced capacity to hold a single substantially vertical row of balls, there being an opening in the garment along the seam communicating with the pocket a short distance above the lower end of the pocket, the last mentioned opening being proportioned to pass a single golf ball, and means releasably holding the last mentioned opening closed.

6. A garment including, two body portions connected at a seam, and a pocket attached to the inner side of one of said body portions, the said portion having extra fullness along the seam adjacent the pocket, there being an opening in said portion communicating with the upper end of the pocket, the upper portion of the pocket being proportioned to hold a relatively large number of golf balls, the lower portion of the pocket being of reduced capacity to hold a single substantially vertical row of balls, there being an opening in the said body portion communicating with the lower end of the pocket and proportioned to pass a single golf ball.

7. A garment including a body and a pocket, said body having an upper opening adjacent to and communicating with the interior of the upper portion of the pocket and having a restricted lower opening adjacent to and communicating with the interior of the lower end of the pocket close to its bottom, said pocket being located on the inner side of the body and having a relatively wide upper end and a relatively narrow lower end, the lower opening of the body being of substantially equal width with the pocket at its lower end.

8. Trousers including a body having a hip portion, a pocket on the inner side of the body for holding golf balls, or the like, means attaching the upper end of the pocket to the inside of the hip portion, there being an opening in the hip portion adjacent said means and communicating with the interior of the pocket at its upper end, and means attaching the lower end portion of the pocket to the body, the lower end portion of the pocket being of reduced transverse dimensions to hold a single row of balls, there being a restricted opening in the body directly communicating with the interior of the pocket at its lower end.

9. A garment of the character described including, a body having a hip portion and a leg portion joined by a. seam, a pocket on the inner side of the hip portion, there being an opening in the hip portion communicating with the upper end of the pocket, and means connecting the lower portion of the pocket to the body of the garment at the seam, there being a. restricted opening in the body of the garment adjacent the seam communicating directly with the interior of the lower end of the pocket from the exterior of the body.
