; gwuawtoa Patented Aug. 21, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE The present invention relates to a unitary cigarette and match pack, and more particularly to such packs wherein a means is provided to strike the match while it is withdrawn from its container.

The main object of my invention is to provide a cigarette and match pack that is simple and compact whereby it may be economically constructed and easily manipulated by the user.

Another object is to provide in such packages an outer sealing envelope in combination with a rip cord that is so arranged to not only rip the envelope, but also to bend the free or upper ends of the match strips in a manner to condition the same to be more readily grasped by the user to faci itate withdrawing the matches.

Other objects will be readily apparent from the detailed specification which follows when considered with the accompanying drawing, where- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing the assembled pack; and

Fig. 2 shows a view in cross section on line 2--2 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawing in detail, a standard cigarette pack 1 is shown as being integrally se- 7 cured to a match pack 2 by means of glue, or the like, applied to contacting surfaces at 3. The match pack .2 in preferred form is a modification of the gopher pack now in common use. The

match pack shown comprises a paper, or like,

container formed with a front wall 4 and a rear wall 5. Between the wall portions 4, 5 are arranged a plurality of paper match sticks 8 grouped in one or more layers as desired, and with the head ends 7 at the lower ends. Each match sticlsls free from the others whereby no tearing act is necessary. Adjacent the upper iree ends of the matches, a strip or coating of igniting material 8 is provided in position upon the irmer face of the front wall 4. A second or auxiliary strip or coating of igniting material 9 is shown as positioned on the inner face of the rear wall 5 of the match pack to be used to ignite a match that may fail to strike on the strip 8. A rubber band 10 is placed to surround the upper end of the match pack in a manner to exert pressure in a direction to restrict the cross-section of the match pack whereby to better retain the strip 9 in position to contact the heads 7.

A transparent sealing wrapper 11 of the usual cellulosic type is applied to completely enclose both the cigarette pack and the match pack. A

In operation, the user of the unitary pack 7 shown may readily rip open the outer wrapper 11 by a pull on the cord end 13. As this cord is pulled at a right angle to the match pack 2. it will exert a bending force on the upper ends of the match sticks whereby these ends are given a permanent bend outwardly as well as an axial twist to a position in dotted lines at 15 in Fig. 2. This change in shape permits the upper match ends to be more readily grasped by the user. As a singlematch is withdrawn in an upward direction, its head 7 will rub along the igniter 8 in a manner to ignite the match. In the event of failure to so ignite, the match may be struck on the extra strip 9. It will be noted that the cord 12 is positioned below one end of a revenue stamp 16 whereby he latter may be torn by the cord.

While I have shown and described a preferred form of the invention, it is to be understood that various'modifications of that form are contemplated such as will be embraced within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. In combination, a cigarette pack and a match pack, means for securing said packs together, a moisture proof sealing wrapper surrounding said packs, a .rip cord in operative position adjacent the inner face of said wrapper, the head ends of the matches being positioned at the lower end of the match pack, said rip cord extending in rear of and adjacent the upper free ends of the matches, whereby a lateral pull on said cord is eflective to rip said wrapper and bend the free match ends outwardly.

2. In a device as set forth in claim l, a strip of igniting material arranged on the match pack adjacent its upper end and an elastic band surrounding the match pack at a point adjacent the strip of igniting material.

' 3.. In a device as set forth in claim 1, the inner face of the match pack being provided with an igniting surface in position to contact a match head as the match is withdrawn.
