HOTO-LITHOGRAPHER WASflINQTON D C UNITED STATE PATENT. OFF-Ion.
ISAIAH ARTHUR, OF MEOHANIGSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA;
'IMPROVEMENT -lN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters- Patent No. 197,198, datedNovember 20, 1877 application filed r October 23,1877.-
' To all whom it may concern: 5 i
Be it known that I, ISAIAH ARTHUR, of
' Mechanicsburg, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting- J acks, andI .do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beingi'had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, andinwhich- Figure l is a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is .a detail view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both figures.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of lifting-jacks which have a movable iron clamp which slides upand down an upright post, and which requires no pin or other like appliance to fastenit, but which I'fastens' of its own accord when the lever is applied to the-weight which is to be lifted;
and it consists in the details of construction and general arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and'pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, represents the base of the lifting-jack, and B the upright and cast thereon, is provided a small lug, b,
which engages with a projection, c, on the lever E, for holding the same in place when the weight has been lifted.
It will be observed that in the operation of my improved invention, V the liftingjack is pushed up near the carriage-axle or other weight to be lifted, and the end d of the lever E introduced beneath the weight, thereby causing the clamp D to drop or catch. in the teeth 0 on the front of the-post, thus holding the said lever at the proper fulcrum for lifting the weight. When the weight is raised to the desired height, the handle of the lever is pushed inwardly toward the side of the post, and until the projection c catches under the lug 1), thereby securely holding the lever in place.
It will also be observed that'by means of the teeth G upon the face of the post A, the clamp D and lever E can be readily and securely adjusted at different heights to lift vari:
ous kinds of weights. y
The advantages of my invention will be readily apparent without a more minute description, inasmuch asthe several parts are of the most simple construction, combined with an easy adaptation to the purpose intended.
' Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and useful- In a lifting-jack, the post B, provided with the notched plate 0, in combination with the clamp D and lever E, the several parts being constructed, arranged, and combined to operate substantially as and for thepurpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- ISAIAH ARTHUR.
