3 Claims.

This invention relates to packaging and has special reference to means for packaging loose material such as rayon fibres and the like.

More particular the invention relates to means for packaging such material so arranged that it may be readily opened.

One important object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement of wrapper sheet and cover strip wherein a tearing tab is so arranged that the cover strip may be readily torn in two.

A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement of this kind wherein the tearing tab is carried by the wrapper sheet but projects from beneath the cover strip.

A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement of such a tearing tab wherein the tearing tab is more greatly resistant to tearing than either the cover strip or the wrapper sheet.

With the above and other objects in view, as will be presently set forth, the invention consists in general or certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawing, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:-

Figure 1 is a plan view of a package wrapped in accordance with this invention.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the blank from which the tab is formed.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the edge of the wrapper and illustrating the first step in applying the tab thereto.

Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 but showing the completed tab.

Figure 5 is an enlarged detail section on the ,0 line 5-5 of Figure 1.

In carrying out this invention a wrapper sheet 10 is wrapped around the bundle so that one edge 11 overlaps the opposite edge 12 of the sheet. This forms a joint running, as here shown, longitudi- 5 nally of the bundle. Over this jointis placed a' cover strip 13 which may surround the bundle or may simply extend for the length of the overlapped portion and be adhesively secured to the sheet.

Before the wrapping operation a tearing tab is secured to the edge of the sheet which is intended to overlap the opposite edge and this tab consists of a strip 14 having one side gummed as at 15. One end of this gummed strip is adhesively secured to the under side of the wrapper sheet as at 18 and the strip is then doubled at 1933, Serial No. 683,194

its central transverse line as at 1'7 and has the remaining end 18 adhesively secured to the upper surface of the edge portion of the wrapper in registry with the end first secured. The edge of the wrapper is thus held between'the ends of the tab strip which is suiilciently long to project out from beneath the cover strip laterally thereof as shown in Figure 1 in such position as to be readily grasped by the thumb and finger of a person.

In order to open the package the projecting tab is grasped and, by a movement at right angles to the cover strip the latter is torn across. tearing may then continue in the same direction around the package or may continue along the cover strip as this will have two free ends after being torn across.

There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.

I It is obvious that changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles involved so that it is to be understood that all forms covered by the'appended claims are claimed as the invention.

What is claimed, is:-

1. A package wrapper including a sheet surrounding the package and having one edge overlapping the opposite edge of the sheet to form a joint, a cover strip of tear-able material covering said joint, and a tearing tab projecting laterally from beneath said cover strip and adhesively secured to the overlapping edge of the sheet whereby the conjoint tearing of a portion of the said cover strip and the said overlapping edge may be effected.

2. A package wrapper including a sheet surrounding the package and having one edge overlapping the opposite edge of the sheet to form a joint, a cover strip of tearable material covering saidjoint, and a tearing tab projecting laterally from beneath said cover strip and consisting of a doubled strip of material having its doubled portion outward and its ends adhesively secured to the overlapping edge of the sheet.

A package wrapper including a sheet surrounding the package and having one edge overlapping the opposite edge of the sheet to form a joint, 9. cover strip of tearable material covering said joint, and a tearing tab projecting laterally from beneath said cover strip and consisting of a doubled strip of material having its doubled portion outward and its ends adhesively secured to the overlapping edge of the sheet on opposite si thereof.-
