Abstract
A temporary, disposable seat cover that is lightweight, inexpensive, waterproof, and easy to install in anticipation of exposure to extraordinary soiling conditions, such as when taking a pet to the groomer or veterinarian, for example, and that may be quickly removed following the event. The seat cover is fabricated of a non-woven polyolefin fabric, such as the material sold by DuPont under the trademark TYVEK, and is adapted for universal temporary attachment to either a bucket or bench type automotive seat by means of conventional straps, hooks, or an elastic hem provided in a portion or the entire periphery of the seat cover.
Description
- This invention relates generally to automotive seat covers and, more specifically, to a temporary, disposable seat cover fabricated of a water resistant, tear resistant, lightweight, and inexpensive material, such as a the non-woven polyolefin fabric manufactured by DuPont under the trademark TYVEK.
- After-market automotive seat covers that serve to protect the manufacturer's original equipment seat covers are known. However, these after-market seat covers tend to be made of a relatively heavy material and are thus expensive and time consuming to install. They are primarily intended for long term use to protect the original seat coverings from the wear resulting from ordinary day-to-day usage. They are generally somewhat porous and certainly are not waterproof. Thus, they offer little or no protection in situations in which they are exposed to mud, water, pet or child vomit, etc. In the event they are exposed to such conditions, they must be removed, cleaned, and reinstalled after perhaps also cleaning the underlying original seat covering, all of which is a very time consuming process.
- It would therefore be advantageous to provide a temporary, disposable seat cover that is lightweight, inexpensive, waterproof, and easy to install in anticipation of exposure to extraordinary soiling conditions, such as when taking a pet to the groomer or veterinarian, for example, and that may be quickly removed following the event. Such a seat cover is provided in accordance with the illustrated preferred embodiment of the present invention by employing a lightweight, waterproof non-woven polyolefin fabric material such as that manufactured by DuPont under the trademark TYVEK that is formed to cover the bottom and back of automotive seats and that is temporarily held in place thereon by means of elastic or non-elastic straps and/or elastic hems.
- FIG. 1 is a pictorial diagram illustrating how a disposable seat cover in accordance with the present invention is installed over a single bucket type automotive seat.
- FIG. 2 is a pictorial diagram illustrating how a disposable seat cover in accordance with the present invention is installed over a bench type automotive front or rear seat.
- Referring now to FIG. 1, there is shown a
disposable seat cover 10 that is made of a non-woven polyolefin fabric material of the type sold by DuPont under the trademark TYVEK. The material is conventionally cut to universally fit over a typicalautomotive bucket seat 12 and is temporarily attached thereto by means of a plurality of straps orhooks 14 that may positioned around the back of theseat 12 or hooked or otherwise conventionally fastened to the underside or frame thereof. Alternatively or additionally, anelastic hem 16 may be provided around a portion or the entire periphery ofseat cover 10 to hold it in place overseat 12. - Referring now to FIG. 2, there is shown a
disposable seat cover 20, also preferably fabricated of Dupont TYVEK material. The material is again conventionally cut to universally fit over a typical front or rearbench automotive seat 22. This cover is preferably temporarily held in place overseat 22 by means of anelastic hem 24 provided around a portion or the entire periphery ofseat cover 20 to hold it in place overseat 22.
