Abstract
According to one aspect of the present invention, a desk comprising an upper surface, wherein the upper surface has a top side and a bottom side, each made of a different material; a frame comprised of a first member, a second member, a third member and a fourth member, each of the members attached end to end to form the frame having a top side and a bottom side, wherein each top end of each member has a recessed groove along the top end for the receipt of the upper surface into the recessed groove and the upper surface is supported horizontally and flush with each top end of each member; and four support members, wherein each support member has a first and a second end one of which is in contact with the ground and the other in contact with the frame.
Description
- This invention relates generally to a desk with storage and removable, multi-positional and multi-sided writing surfaces which may be different types of surfaces.
- Traditionally, there was the ubiquitous blackboard or slate, which was written on with sticks of chalk. Commonly today, the board is white in color and is written on with special felt markers. The whiteboard provides erasable information, much like the blackboard but offers a different type of writing surface. Often children or artists attempting to achieve a specific type of effect in a sketch or drawing will have a desire to work solely on one type of surface or may desire to use both types of surfaces interchangeably.
- Young children often need a smaller sized workstation where they can experiment with different mediums, a vertical surface, similar to that of an easel is ideal for this purpose. Yet the need for a flat table for other various craft products is also existent.
- Moreau, U.S. Pat. App. No. 20030226948, teaches an easel workstation consisting of four legs attached to a base so that the legs form a pyramid structure. This design does not include a nonpermanent means to write on the board, nor does it include a flat working surface.
- Holdredge, et al., U.S. Pat. No. 6,575,103, teaches a combination table/easel including a worksurface with an erasable surface which is able to be positioned as either a table or easel. However, this is an easily collapsible design, not very sturdy in nature, and does not include a dual sided writing surface or storage capabilities.
- Previous systems do not provide for both a flat and upright desk/easel apparatus designed to be compactly stored and stow supplies inside.
- It is envisioned that the present invention may be utilized as a free standing desk with a removable, repositionable upper surface which has a different surface on each side of the upper surface. This desk provides for a flat and upright desk/easel which can be compactly stored and has a storage compartment or drawer to stow supplies within the frame.
- According to one aspect of the present invention, a desk is disclosed comprising an upper surface, a frame and four support members. The upper surface has a top side and a bottom side. The top side is made of a first material and the bottom side is made of a second material. The frame is comprised of a first member, a second member, a third member and a fourth member, each of the members having a first end, a second end, a top end and a bottom end. The first end of the first member is connected to the second end of the second member. The first end of the second member is connected to the second end of the third member. The first end of the third member is connected to the second end of the fourth member. The first end of the fourth member is connected to the second end of the first member to form the frame having a top side and a bottom side. Each top end of each member has a recessed groove along the top end for the receipt of the upper surface into the recessed groove and the upper surface is supported horizontally and flush with each top end of each member. Each of the four support members have a first and a second end and each first end of each member is in contact with the ground and each second end of each said member is in contact with the frame.
- According to another embodiment, a desk is disclosed comprising an upper surface, a frame, a lower surface, four support members and at least one additional support member. The upper surface has a top side and a bottom side. The top side is made of a first material and the bottom side is made of a second material. The frame comprised of a first member, a second member, a third member and a fourth member, each of the members having a first end, a second end, a top end and a bottom end. The first end of the first member is connected to the second end of the second member. The first end of the second member is connected to the second end of the third member. The first end of the third member is connected to the second end of the fourth member. The first end of the fourth member is connected to the second end of the first member to form the frame having a top side and a bottom side. Each top end of each member has a recessed groove along the top end for the receipt of the upper surface into the recessed groove and the upper surface is supported horizontally and flush with each top end of each member. The top end of the first member and the top end of the third member each have a recessed gap for receipt of the upper surface. The recessed gap has a horizontal bottom edge to support the upper surface and three vertical edges to support the upper surface from tipping away from the vertical position. The recessed gap in the first member is parallel to and aligned with the recessed gap in the third member. Each of the four support members has a first and a second end and each first end of each member is in contact with the ground and each second end of each member is hingedly connected to the frame at an angle between 90 and 145 degrees. The lower surface is attached to the bottom end of each member of the frame to provide a storage compartment contained within the frame and covered by the upper surface. The additional support members, each have a first end and a second end. The first end is connected to one of the four support members and the second end is connected to another of the four support members.
- Yet another embodiment discloses a desk comprising an upper surface, a frame, four support members and at least two cross members. The upper surface has a first surface and a second surface, each surface having a first edge, a second edge, a third edge and a fourth edge. The first surface is made of a first material and the second surface is made of a second material. The first edge of the first surface is attached to the first edge of the second surface by a hinged mechanism. The frame is comprised of a rectangular surface having a substantially rectangular concentric hole, top, bottom, a first inner edge, first outer edge, second inner edge, second outer edge, third inner edge, third outer edge, fourth inner edge and fourth outer edge. The four support members each have a first and a second end, each first end of each support member is in contact with the ground and each second end of each member is in contact with the frame. The cross members each of said members having a first end, a second end, an inner surface, a top end and a bottom end, wherein each said first end and each said second end of each said cross member is connected to said bottom of said frame to support the weight of said upper surface.
- According to another embodiment, a desk is disclosed comprising an upper surface, a frame, four support members, at least one storage tray and at least two cross members. The upper surface is further comprised of a first surface made of a first material and a second surface made of a second material, each surface having a first edge, a second edge, a third edge and a fourth edge. The first edge of the first surface is attached to the first edge of the second surface by a hinged mechanism. The frame is comprised of a rectangular surface having a substantially rectangular concentric hole, top, bottom, a first inner edge, first outer edge, second inner edge, second outer edge, third inner edge, third outer edge, fourth inner edge and fourth outer edge. The four support members each have a first and a second end. Each first end of each member is in contact with the ground and each second end of each member is in contact with the frame. The at least one storage tray is removably contained below the frame. The at least two cross members each have a first end, a second end, an inner surface, a top end and a bottom end. Each first end and each second end of each cross member is connected to the bottom of the frame to support the weight of the upper surface.

FIG. 7 depicts another embodiment of the removable upper surface according to the present invention. - The following detailed description is of the best currently contemplated modes of carrying out the invention. The description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, but is made merely for the purpose of illustrating the general principles of the invention, since the scope of the invention is best defined by the appended claims.
- It is envisioned that the present invention provides a desk with a removable upper surface which can be easily repositioned in a variety of different manners.
FIGS. 1-3 depict a preferred embodiment where thedesk 10, is shown with aframe 50 having a rectangular shape. Theframe 50 is comprised of afirst member 52 having a first end 54, asecond end 56, atop end 58 and abottom end 350, asecond member 60 having afirst end 62, asecond end 64, atop end 66 and a bottom end 352 (not visible), athird member 68 having afirst end 70, asecond end 72, atop end 74 and a bottom end 354 (not visible) and afourth member 76 having afirst end 78, asecond end 80, atop end 82 and abottom end 356. The first end 54 of the first member-52 is connected substantially perpendicular to thesecond end 64 of thesecond member 60. Thefirst end 62 of thesecond member 60 is connected substantially perpendicular to thesecond end 72 of thethird member 68. Thefirst end 70 of thethird member 68 is connected substantially perpendicular to thesecond end 80 of the third member. Thefirst end 78 of thefourth member 76 is connected substantially perpendicular to thesecond end 56 of thefirst member 52 to complete theframe 50 making it substantially rectangular in shape. Theframe 50 is supported by foursupport members first end second end frame 50. - As shown in
FIG. 1 ,additional support members 108 may be included. Theseadditional members 108 each have afirst end 110 and asecond end 112, each connected to adifferent support member support member 108 is connected at thefirst end 110 to asupport member 84 and at thesecond end 112 to anothersupport member 90. - In an alternate embodiment, depicted in FIGS. 2A-B, the
upper surface 20 of thedesk 10 can be positioned vertically. To support theupper surface 20 in such a position thesecond member 60 of theframe 50 has a recessedgap 138 partially through themember 60. Thehorizontal bottom edge 140 of the recessedgap 138 supports the weight of theupper surface 20 while themember 60 and the threevertical edges upper surface 20 and prevent it from moving away from its horizontal position. An identical recessed gap 148 (seeFIG. 3 ) on thefourth member 76 of theframe 50 aligned and parallel with the recessedgap 138 on thesecond member 60 of theframe 50 supports the opposite side of the upper surface.FIG. 3 also depicts a detailed view of the connection between the vertical support members and frame. This connection is made at anangle 178 which can range from 90 degrees to 145 degrees. As depicted inFIG. 1 , it is intended that theupper surface 20 of thedesk 10 is able to lie within theframe 50 horizontal and flush with thetop side member frame 50. Theupper surface 20 is supported by a recessedgroove FIGS. 2 and 3 ) along theupper surface member frame 50. - As shown in
FIG. 4 , thedesk 10 has anupper surface 20, which has atop side 22, made of a first material chosen from the group consisting of blackboard, whiteboard, slate, dry erase or corkboard. Theupper surface 20 also has abottom side 24, made of a second material chosen from the group consisting of blackboard, whiteboard, slate, dry erase or corkboard. As shown inFIG. 4A , one side of the upper surface may contain a gameboard surface 28. - An alternate embodiment as depicted in
FIGS. 5-7 is asimilar desk 500 with anupper surface 180 comprised of afirst surface 204 and asecond surface 216. Thefirst surface 204 has afirst edge 206, asecond edge 208, athird edge 210 and afourth edge 212 and thesecond surface 216 has afirst edge 218, asecond edge 220, a third edge 222 and afourth edge 224. Thefirst edge 206 of thefirst surface 204 is connected to thefirst edge 218 of thesecond surface 216 with a hingedmechanism 200. This embodiment includes aframe 502 which has an outer shape that may be substantially rectangular and an inner substantially concentric hole. As depicted inFIG. 5 , with a substantially rectangular shape there is a top of theframe 504, a first inner surface 506, a firstouter surface 508, a secondinner surface 510, a secondouter surface 512, a thirdinner surface 514, a thirdouter surface 516, a fourthinner surface 514 and a fourthouter surface 516. This embodiment may also include adecorative design 350 on the top surface of theframe 502. Thedesk 500 has at least two cross members. As depicted inFIG. 5 , there are sixcross members cross members frame 502 near connected corners of inner edges. Forexample cross member 560 is connected near the joint between the secondinner edge 510 and the first inner edge 506. The corner cross members provide support for theupper surface 180 as well as stability for theframe 502. The two remainingcross members inner edge 510 of theframe 502. - The present invention also envisions at least one
storage tray frame 502. This tray is supported by twocross members cross member first end 312 and asecond end 314. Thefirst end 312 is connected to the bottom of theframe 502 under the first inner edge 506 and thesecond end 314 is connected to the bottom of theframe 502 under the thirdinner edge 514. Each of theparallel rails ridge 316, on the inner surface which supports thestorage tray storage tray frame 502. - Additionally this embodiment may include two recessed
openings inner edge 510 of theframe 502 and the fourthinner edge 518 of theframe 502. These recessedopenings upper surface 20 from theframe 50. As depicted inFIG. 6 , thedesk 500 can support theupper surface 180 when the third edge 222 of thesecond surface 216 is in contact withcross members frame 502, while thethird edge 210 of thefirst surface 204 is in contact withcross members inner edge 514 of theframe 502.FIG. 7 depicts theupper surface 180 positioned so thefirst surface 204 is directly on top of thesecond surface 216 and they fit within theframe 502 and flush with the top of theframe 504. - It should be understood, of course, that the foregoing relates to preferred embodiments of the invention and that modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the following claims.
Claims (34)
1. A desk comprising:
an upper surface, wherein said upper surface has a top side and a bottom side, wherein said top side is made of a first material and said bottom side is made of a second material;
a frame comprised of a first member, a second member, a third member and a fourth member, each of said members having a first end, a second end, a top end and a bottom end, wherein said first end of said first member is connected to said second end of said second member, said first end of said second member is connected to said second end of said third member, said first end of said third member is connected to said second end of said fourth member and said first end of said fourth member is connected to said second end of said first member to form said frame having a top side and a bottom side, wherein each said top end of each said member has a recessed groove along said top end for the receipt of said upper surface into said recessed groove and said upper surface is supported horizontally and flush with each said top end of each said member; and
four support members, wherein each said support member has a first and a second end and each said first end of each said member is in contact with the ground and each said second end of each said member is in contact with said frame.
2. A desk as in claim 1 , wherein said top side of said upper surface is selected from the consisting of blackboard, whiteboard, slate, dry erase or corkboard.
3. A desk as in claim 1 , wherein said bottom side of said upper surface is selected from the group consisting of blackboard, whiteboard, slate, dry erase or corkboard.
4. A desk as in claim 1 , wherein said top end of said first member and said top end of said third member have a recessed gap for receipt of said upper surface, wherein said recessed gap has a horizontal bottom edge to support said upper surface and three vertical edges to support said upper surface from tipping away from the vertical position and said recessed gap in said first member is parallel to and aligned with said recessed gap in said third member.
5. A desk as in claim 1 , wherein each said top end of each said member of said frame further comprises a decorative pattern.
6. A desk as in claim 1 , wherein each said top end of each said member of said frame further comprises a gameboard design allowing use of the tray for a board game.
7. A desk as in claim 1 , wherein said upper surface has a gameboard design.
8. A desk as in claim 1 , further comprising a lower surface attached to said bottom end of each said members of said frame to provide a storage compartment contained within said frame and covered by said upper surface.
9. A desk as in claim 1 , further comprising at least one additional support members, each said additional support member having a first end and a second end, wherein said first end is connected to one of said four support members and said second end is connected to another of said four support members.
10. A desk as in claim 1 , wherein each of said four support members is hingedly attached to said frame.
11. A desk as in claim 1 , wherein said second member and said fourth member have a recessed opening protruding through both said top end and said bottom end.
12. A desk as in claim 1 , further comprising at least one storage tray removably contained within said frame.
13. A desk as in claim 12 , further comprising a first parallel rail and a second parallel rail, wherein each said parallel rail has a first end, a second end and an inner surface and each said first end of each said parallel rail is connected to said first member, each second end of each said parallel rail is connected to said third member and each said inner surface has a protruding ridge, wherein said protruding ridge allows for the receipt of each said at least one storage tray.
14. A desk as in claim 1 , wherein said four support members are connected perpendicularly to said frame.
15. A desk as in claim 1 , wherein said four support members are connected to said frame at an angle between 90 and 145 degrees.
16. A desk comprising:
an upper surface, wherein said upper surface has a top side and a bottom side, wherein said top side is made of a first material and said bottom side is made of a second material;
a frame comprised of a first member, a second member, a third member and a fourth member, each of said members having a first end, a second end, a top end and a bottom end, wherein said first end of said first member is connected to said second end of said second member, said first end of said second member is connected to said second end of said third member, said first end of said third member is connected to said second end of said fourth member and said first end of said fourth member is connected to said second end of said first member to form said frame having a top side and a bottom side, wherein each said top end of each said member has a recessed groove along said top end for the receipt of said upper surface into said recessed groove and said upper surface is supported horizontally and flush with each said top end of each said member and said top end of said first member and said top end of said third member have a recessed gap for receipt of said upper surface, wherein said recessed gap has a horizontal bottom edge to support said upper surface and three vertical edges to support said upper surface from tipping away from the vertical position and said recessed gap in said first member is parallel to and aligned with said recessed gap in said third member;
four support members, wherein each said support member has a first and a second end and each said first end of each said member is in contact with the ground and each said second end of each said member is hingedly connected to said frame at an angle between 90 and 145 degrees;
a lower surface attached to said bottom end of each said members of said frame to provide a storage compartment contained within said frame and covered by said upper surface; and
at least one additional support members, each said additional support member having a first end and a second end, wherein said first end is connected to one of said four support members and said second end is connected to another of said four support members.
17. A desk comprising:
an upper surface, wherein said upper surface is further comprised of a first surface made of a first material and having a first edge, a second edge, a third edge and a fourth edge, a second surface made of a second material and having a first edge, a second edge, a third edge and a fourth edge, wherein said first edge of first surface being attached to said first edge of said second surface by a hinged mechanism;
a frame comprised of a rectangular surface having a substantially rectangular concentric hole, top, bottom, a first inner edge, first outer edge, second inner edge, second outer edge, third inner edge, third outer edge, fourth inner edge and fourth outer edge;
four support members, wherein each said support member has a first and a second end and each said first end of each said member is in contact with the ground and each said second end of each said member is in contact with said frame; and
at least two cross members, each of said members having a first end, a second end, an inner surface, a top end and a bottom end, wherein each said first end and each said second end of each said cross member is connected to said bottom of said frame to support the weight of said upper surface.
18. A desk as in claim 17 , wherein said first surface of said upper surface is selected from the group consisting of blackboard, whiteboard, slate, dry erase or corkboard.
19. A desk as in claim 17 , wherein said second surface of said upper surface is selected from the group consisting of blackboard, whiteboard, slate, dry erase or corkboard.
20. A desk as in claim 17 , wherein said hinged mechanism rotates 360 degrees.
21. A desk as in claim 17 , wherein said at least two cross members are positioned substantially parallel with each other and with said second inner edge.
22. A desk as in claim 17 , wherein said at least two support members connect to said bottom of said frame near the intersection of two connecting inner edges of said frame.
23. A desk as in claim 17 , wherein said top end of said frame further comprises a decorative pattern.
24. A desk as in claim 17 , wherein said top end of said frame further comprises a gameboard design allowing use of the tray for a board game.
25. A desk as in claim 17 , wherein said upper surface has a gameboard design.
26. A desk as in claim 17 , further comprising a lower surface attached to said bottom end of each said member of said frame to provide a storage compartment contained within said frame and covered by said upper surface.
27. A desk as in claim 17 , further comprising at least one additional support members, each said additional support member having a first end and a second end, wherein said first end is connected to one of said four support members and said second end is connected to another of said four support members.
28. A desk as in claim 17 , wherein each of said four support members is hingedly attached to said frame.
29. A desk as in claim 17 , wherein said second inner edge of said frame and fourth inner edge of said frame have a recessed opening protruding through both said top of said frame and said bottom of said frame.
30. A desk as in claim 17 , further comprising at least one storage tray removably contained below said frame.
31. A desk as in claim 30 wherein said at least two cross members are substantially parallel and further comprise a protruding ridge along each said inner surface which allows for the receipt of each said at least one storage tray.
32. A desk as in claim 17 , wherein said four support members are connected perpendicularly to said frame.
33. A desk as in claim 17 , wherein said four support members are connected to said frame at an angle between 90 and 145 degrees.
34. A desk comprising:
an upper surface, wherein said upper surface is further comprised of a first surface made of a first material and having a first edge, a second edge, a third edge and a fourth edge, a second surface made of a second material and having a first edge, a second edge, a third edge and a fourth edge, wherein said first edge of first surface being attached to said first edge of said second surface by a hinged mechanism;
a frame comprised of a rectangular surface having a substantially rectangular concentric hole, top, bottom, a first inner edge, first outer edge, second inner edge, second outer edge, third inner edge, third outer edge, fourth inner edge and fourth outer edge;
four support members, wherein each said support member has a first and a second end and each said first end of each said member is in contact with the ground and each said second end of each said member is in contact with said frame; and
at least one storage tray removably contained below said frame; and
at least two cross members, each of said members having a first end, a second end, an inner surface, a top end and a bottom end, wherein each said first end and each said second end of each said cross member is connected to said bottom of said frame to support the weight of said upper surface.
