- This invention relates generally to a pillow book, and, more particularly, to a pillow book having printed fabric pages between two pillow-like book covers.
- A general object of the invention is to provide a pillow book having an improved connection or seam connecting two pillows and the fabric pages therebetween. The pillow book of this invention also provides a support for thin fabric pages, thereby making the pages relatively easier for the consumer to manipulate.
- The general object of the invention can be attained, at least in part, through a pillow book including a first pillow including a first pillow interior edge portion and a second pillow including a second pillow interior edge portion. The second pillow interior edge portion is connected to the first pillow interior edge portion. The pillow book also includes a plurality of leaves. Each of the plurality of leaves comprises a leaf interior edge portion disposed between and connected to the first pillow interior edge portion and the second pillow interior edge portion.
- The invention further comprehends a pillow book comprising a first pillow including a first pillow interior edge portion and a second pillow including a second pillow interior edge portion. The second pillow interior edge portion is connected to the first pillow interior edge portion. The pillow book includes a plurality of leaves connected to the first and second pillows and disposed between the first and second pillows when the pillow book is in a closed position. The plurality of leaves are formed from a single folded fabric sheet. Each of the plurality of leaves defines a pocket containing a nonwoven support sheet.
- Other objects and advantages will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the appended claims and drawings.
-
FIG. 1 is a partial sectional perspective view of a pillow book, in an open position showing exposed pages, according to one embodiment of this invention. -
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the pillow book ofFIG. 1 , in a closed position. -
FIG. 3 is a partial sectional view of the pillow book ofFIG. 1 , taken along line 3-3. -
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of a pillow book, in a closed position, according to another embodiment of this invention. - The present invention provides a pillow book. The pillow book has two pillows which form the front and back covers of the pillow book, respectively. The pillow book includes a plurality of leaves formed of a fabric material and disposed between the two pillows. The fabric leaves are desirably printed on either side to provide pages for the pillow book.
- An exemplary embodiment of the
pillow book 10 is shown inFIGS. 1-3 .FIG. 1 shows thepillow book 10 in an open position, whileFIG. 2 shows thepillow book 10 in a closed position. Thepillow book 10 includes afirst pillow 12 and asecond pillow 14. Thefirst pillow 12 is the front cover of thepillow book 10 and can optionally be printed with text and/or graphics. Thesecond pillow 14 is the back cover of thepillow book 10. Thefirst pillow 12 has a first pillowinterior edge portion 16 disposed at or toward aseam 20 of thepillow book 10. Thesecond pillow 14 has a second pillowinterior edge portion 18 also disposed at or toward theseam 20 of thepillow book 10. The second pillowinterior edge portion 18 is connected to the first pillowinterior edge portion 16 at theseam 20. - The
first pillow 12 has a first pillowexterior edge portion 22 disposed at opposite side from the first pillowinterior edge portion 16. Similarly, thesecond pillow 14 has a second pillowexterior edge portion 24 disposed at an opposite side from the second pillowinterior edge portion 18. Thepillow book 10 desirably includes a plurality of fasteners for holding thepillow book 10 in the closed position shown inFIG. 2 . The fasteners are desirably positioned at or along the first pillowexterior edge portion 22 and the second pillowexterior edge portion 24. The fasteners are adapted to secure the first pillowexterior edge portion 22 to the second pillowexterior edge 24 when thepillow book 10 is in a closed position. - As shown in
FIGS. 1 and 2 , the fasteners are embodied as fourbuttons 26 disposed along the second pillowexterior edge portion 24. Fourcorresponding loops 28 are disposed along the first pillowexterior edge portion 22. Each of the plurality ofloops 28 are adapted to fit over and around a correspondingly aligned one of the plurality ofbuttons 26, as shown inFIG. 2 , to secure thepillow book 10 in the closed position. As will be appreciated by those skilled in the art following the teachings herein provided, the positions of thebuttons 26 and theloops 28 can be reversed or alternatingly positioned. As will also be appreciated, various and alternative fasteners available in the art can be used for the fasteners of the pillow book of this invention, such as, for example, snaps, zippers, and/or hook and loop fasteners. - The
pillow book 10 includes a plurality ofleaves 30. Each of theleaves 30 provides twopage surfaces 32, thereby forming two pages of thepillow book 10. In a preferred embodiment of this invention, such as shown inFIGS. 1-3 , the plurality ofleaves 30 is formed from a single folded sheet of fabric. In such an embodiment, each of the plurality ofleaves 30 is separated from an adjacent one of the plurality ofleaves 30 by a fold, such as one of theinterior edge folds 34. Likewise, eachpage surface 32 is separated from anadjacent page surface 32 by a fold, such as one of theinterior edge folds 34 or theexterior edge folds 36. - As shown in
FIG. 3 , each of the plurality ofleaves 30 includes a leafinterior edge portion 40. The leafinterior edge portions 40 are disposed between and connected to the first pillowinterior edge portion 16 and the second pillowinterior edge portion 18. In the embodiment shown inFIG. 3 , thefirst pillow 12 includes a first pillowinner side 42 and thesecond pillow 14 includes a second pillowinner side 44, which form the inside surfaces of the front and back covers of thepillow book 10, respectively. The leafinterior edge portion 40 of each of theleaves 30 is disposed between the first pillowinner side 42 and the second pillowinner side 44. Also in the embodiment ofFIG. 3 , the first pillowinner side 42 and a first pillowouter side 46 are folded back to form foldedsections 50 and 52, respectively, for the connection to the leafinterior edge portions 40. Desirably, the leafinterior edge portion 40 of each of the plurality ofleaves 30 is connected between the first pillowinterior edge portion 42 and the second pillowinterior edge portion 44 by a plurality ofstitches 56. - The construction of the
pillow book 10 according to one embodiment of this invention is relatively simple and cost-effective. The plurality ofleaves 30 can be formed by printing the desired text and/or graphics of each page of thepillow book 10 consecutively on one side of a single fabric sheet. The fabric sheet is folded multiple times, to formfolds leaves 30. As discussed above, eachpage 32 of thepillow book 10 is separated from anadjacent page 32 by a fold. The leafinterior edge portions 40 of theleaves 30 are then stitched to and/or between the first pillowinterior edge portion 16 and the second pillowinterior edge portion 18. As will be appreciated by those skilled in the art following the teachings herein provided, various and alternative stitches and stitching types known are available for assembling the pillows, leaves, and pillow book of this invention. - Various and alternative fabrics can be used to construct the
pillow book 10, and more particularly thepillows leaves 30. Examples of fabrics useful in constructing the pillow book of this invention include natural and synthetic fabrics, such as, without limitation, cotton, rayon, and polyester materials. Desirably, the portions of the pillow book which are printed on, e.g., the leaves and optionally the pillow inner and/or outer sides, are made from materials that are appropriate for printing. The pillow inner sides and outer sides can be formed from the same or different materials. The pillows are desirably stuffed with a natural or synthetic fluff material, for example, cotton, as shown inFIG. 3 asfluff material 60. - In one embodiment of this invention, as the leaves are desirably formed of a flexible fabric sheet, a support sheet is used to support or stiffen the individual leaves. As shown in
FIGS. 1 and 3 , each of the plurality ofleaves 30 defines apocket 64. Eachpocket 64 is formed between the two folded fabric portions of each of theleaves 30. Asupport sheet 66 is disposed in each of thepockets 64. Thesupport sheet 66 is desirably formed from a stiffer material sheet than the fabric leaves 30. Thestiffer support sheets 66 provide desirable stiffness for theleaves 30, but still allow theleaves 30 to be flexible and soft. Thesupport sheets 66 can be formed from various and alternative materials. In one embodiment of this invention, thesupport sheets 66 are made from a nonwoven material, such as a plastic fiber sheet, film, or grid material. - Referring to
FIG. 1 , each of the plurality ofleaves 30 includes a first leafexterior edge portion 72 extending perpendicularly from the leafinterior edge portion 40. A second leafexterior edge portion 74 also extends perpendicularly from the leafinterior edge portion 40 on an opposite side of each of theleaves 30 from the first leafexterior edge portion 72. A firstexterior sheet edge 76 of eachsupport sheet 66 is stitched to the first leafexterior edge portion 72 by stitches 80. On the opposite side, a second exterior sheet edge (not shown) of thesupport sheet 66 is stitched to the second leafexterior edge portion 74 by stitches 82. Stitching thesupport sheet 66 to the correspondingleaf 30 keeps thesupport sheet 66 from undesirable shifting, falling, and/or bunching within thepocket 64. As shown inFIG. 3 , thesupport sheets 66 are optionally stitched with the leafinterior edge portion 40 to thepillows - As will be appreciated various and alternative sizes, shapes, and/or configurations are available for the pillow book, the pillows, the leaves, support sheets, seams and stitches of this invention. As shown in
FIGS. 1 and 2 , thepillow book 10 has an overall rectangular configuration, although other shapes, such as squares, ovals, circles, and triangles, are available as well. The pillow book of this invention can be sized according to need. In one embodiment of this invention, the pillow book has a size of about 1.5 feet to about 3 feet, and more desirably about 2 feet, by about 1.0 feet to about 2.5 feet, and more desirably about 1.5 feet. As shown inFIG. 1 , theseam 20 is disposed along a longer edge or side of therectangular pillow book 10.FIG. 4 illustrates apillow book 100 according to another embodiment of this invention. InFIG. 4 , aseam 102 of thepillow book 100 is disposed along ashorter side 104 of the pillow book. In another alternative embodiment of this invention, the first pillow inner side and the second pillow inner side are each formed at least in part by a portion of the folded sheet of the leaves. - Thus, the invention provides a pillow book having a soft pillow front and back cover and flexible leaves disposed therein. The leaves of the pillow book can be formed of a single folded sheet for efficient and relatively less expensive manufacturing, while providing a relatively strong and aesthetically pleasing seam. The support sheets for the leaves of the pillow book of this invention provide stiffness to make the pillow book easier to use and read, while still maintaining soft and flexible pages.
- The invention illustratively disclosed herein suitably may be practiced in the absence of any element, part, step, component, or ingredient which is not specifically disclosed herein.
- While in the foregoing detailed description this invention has been described in relation to certain preferred embodiments thereof, and many details have been set forth for purposes of illustration, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the invention is susceptible to additional embodiments and that certain of the details described herein can be varied considerably without departing from the basic principles of the invention.
