Description

July 23, E M GRlBBON GARMENT Filed Oct. '7, 1932 //\/Z/E/\/7'U ELM. GRlBBON i TTURA/EW Patented July 23, 1935 I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates generally to garments, and particularly to womens under garments.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved form of corset or foundation garment with a removable lining therefor in order to reduce the amount of laundering neces:v
sary when such garments are worn next to the body by the provision of a suitable lining, and
at the same time eliminating the necessity of additional shoulder straps for the purpose of holding this lining in its proper relationship to the body of the wearer and the foundation garment itself.
The second object is to provide aprotection for the foundation garment and body-which will be inexpensive to manufacture, simple to apply,
comfortable to wear and easy to launder,
These, and other objects, will become more apparent from the specification following as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view showing the garment being worn.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lining.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a mode of attaching the upper edge of the lining to the upper edge of the foundation garment.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the manner in which the lower edge of the lining is held in relation to the lower edge of the foundation garment.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the corset form of foundation garment provided with shoulder straps and the manner in which the lining is supported by the shoulder straps at its upper end.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the manner in which the upper edge of p the lining may be attached to the corset shoulder straps.
Similar numbers of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawing, there is shown in Fig. 1 a short form of foundation garment l such as is now in common use and is worn without any additional means of support other than the natural shape of the body, which prevents a shifting of the garment.
Just inside of the foundation garment I0 is placed a liner H, preferably of a resilient material similar to that from which under garments are commonly made. The lower edge l2 extends to the lower edge I3. of the foundation garment l0 and conforms generally thereto. It is provided with a number of strap loops [4 through which may pass the hose supporter straps I5.
Along the upper edge l6 of the lining II are secured the loops ll. These loops may be secured in position at both ends, or as shown in Fig. 6 the end l8 may be sewed and the end l9 may be snapped into position.
Secured to the upper edge 20 of the foundationgarment ID are the straps 2|, each of which is provided with a snap button 22 which engages a snap button hole 23 on the garment Hi.
In the form of the device shown in Fig. 5, instead of supporting the upper edge I 6 of the lining H by some form' of fastening means to the edge 24 of the corset 25, it is fastened instead to the straps 26 which may be secured at each end to the edges 24; or one or both of the ends may be removably attached thereto. It is for this reason that it is desirable to make the loops IT in the form shown in Fig. 6.
g Inthe longer form of the garment shown in Fig. it may be found unnecessary to provide any special form of fastening means along the upper edge thereof, but along the lower edge 21 the form of fastening shown, or a suitable equivalent, must be employed. The type shown has been selected owing to the cheapness of manufacture, reliability in use, and the fact that it will not bunch or prove uncomfortable to the wearer.
It must be clear, however, that any other suitable form of fastening means may be employed, such as pins, buttons or tie strings without departing from the spirit of this invention, which resides entirely in the employment of a removable lining for the foundation garment, which lining serves as an under garment for that portion of the body normally covered by the foundation garment, preventing thereby the premature soiling of the foundation garment thereby adding to its life due to the decreased number of launderings necessary, and also expediting the problem of keeping the garments in a clean state.
It is a matter of common knowledge that shoulder straps of all kinds are objectionable and for this reason foundation garments are often worn next to the body. With my device it is possible to obtain the comfort and cleanliness obtainable by the use of an under garment without requiring the aid of shoulder straps.
I claim:
An undergarment comprising a piece of resilient tubular fabric having loops disposed along the lower edge thereof through which hose supporting straps may be passed for the purpose of holding the lower edge of said undergarment down to and parallel with the lower edge of a foundation garment to which said hose supporters are attached and snap loops disposed along the upper edge of said undergarment whereby said undergarment may be suspended from the upper edge of said foundation garment, and whereby the upper edge of said undergarment shall not fall below the upper edge of said foundation garment.
ELIZABETH M. GRIBBON.
