COMBINED SMOKING TOBACCO AND CIGARETTE PAPER BOOKLET PACKAGE Filed NOV. 5, 1932 INVENTQR,
John J. Driscoll I BY H] TORNEY Patented Aug. 13, 1935 5 UNITED STATES COMBINED SMOKING ToBAoco AND CIGARETTE PAPER BOOKLET PACKAGE John J. Driscoll, Jersey City, N. J assignor to P.
Lorillard 00., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New Jersey Application November-5, 1932', Serial No. 641,387
1 Claim.
The invention relates to packages and more particularly to improved combined packages for cigarette tobacco and cigarette paper, preferably in booklet form.
Recently there has come into vogue the rolling of cigarettes by the smoker for individual use, and to supply this demand various size packages of cigarette tobacco have been placed on the market. To facilitate the making of the cigarettes, it is customary to give away with the package of tobacco a small packet of cigarette papers, such papers being enclosed usually in a paper Wrapper, and known in the trade as a booklet.
It is desirable to the manufacturer of the cigarette tobacco to print the paper wrapper of the booklet of cigarette papers in distinctive colors and having distinctive characters thereon, I
and frequently with trade-name and other advertising indicia, which usually correspond to the coloring and marking of the cigarette tobacco package.
An object of the invention is, therefore, to provide a combined package affording airand moisture-proof carriage of the tobacco and a readily accessible and secure retention of the cigarette paper.
A further object of the invention is to provide such combined package of a form adapted to present-day packaging machines, and particularly of the so-called pouch type.
More particularly, the invention is directed to a pouch package comprising an inner airand moisture-sealing envelope of tin-foil or equivalent material, an outer wrapper of paper or equivalent material, the outer faces, usually the two opposite larger faces, of which are imprinted with trade-name and other advertising indicia, as desired, one of which larger faces is provided with a slit, preferably extending vertically, for the reception, retention and support of cigarette papers, preferably in booklet form, the wrapper of the booklet bearing indicia corresponding to that imprinted upon the larger face, whereby the respective indicia are combined in sales appeal and artistic appearance.
Other objects and novel features of construction and arrangement of parts will appear to those skilled in the art from the following detail description and the accompanying drawing, which illustrates preferred embodiments of my invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a pouch package of cigarette tobacco having associated therewith and attached to a larger side thereof, a booklet of cigarette papers by means of a vertically curvedly extending slit in the outer paper wrapper, the slit being substantially at right angles to the bottommargin of the side of the wrapper;
I Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3v is a perspective View of a modification, embodying a single rectilinearly extending slit, illustrating another method of combining the booklet of cigarette papers therewith;
Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, l0 designates a pouch such as ordinarily formed in a packaging machine, and
comprising an inner pouch of tinfoil H, and an outer enwrapped sheet of paper l2. Such package usually enclosed a predetermined amount of cigarette tobacco l3. Usually, a pouch package has its opposite sides I4, I4, of larger dimension, and other opposite sides i5, I5, of smaller dimensions. At R6 are indicated trade-name and other advertising indicia.
For convenience in handling andin dispensing, I provide in the outer enclosing wrapper l2 a vertically extending slit ll defining a flap 18. The fiap 18 may be readily lifted up from the body of the outer wrapper i2 for the insertion and support of a booklet iii of cigarette papers. The outer wrapper of the cigarette paper booklet I!) may and preferably is of the same color as the outer casing i2 and has imprinted thereon the trade-name i5 designating the brand and other advertising indicia of the tobacco with which it is to be associated.
With the booklet H! in position relative to the strip It, as described, it has been found that such booklet of papers i9 is resiliently held in place against accidental displacement and when positioned as shown in the figure, the cigarette tobacco and the cigarette papers are dispensed as a single unit.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4, there is shown the packet iii of cigarette tobacco, similar to the packet shown in Figs. 1 and 2, like parts being designated by like reference numbers, but in the present instance, the outer casing I2 for the easing II] is provided with a rectilinear slit 2!], which extends at a right angle to the bottom margin. The slit 2!] allows the insertion of a booklet of cigarette papers [8 between the outer wrapper I2 and the inner or enclosing pouch I I; the resiliency of the material I2 of the outer wrapper and the friction between the booklet or other packet of cigarette papers and the inner and outer wrapping material are sufficient to hold the booklet! in wrapper.
position against accidental displacement. However, upon the'user grasping one, i. e. the outerpersons will understand that many variations may be made, and I contemplate the employment of any structures orarrangement that are properly within the scope' of the appended claim.
In all of theaforesaidjembodiments, thebooklet is readily accessible, and is securely supported by the outer Wrapper, and including the lower edge of itsrslit means, and at a definite spacing from the bottom margin of the side of the paper packet of cigarette papers is partially had by the lower edgeof the slit, the remaining support being effectuated by the friction between the booklet and the respectivefaces of the packet afi'orded between the outer wrapper. I2 and the inner pouch I I. I, 7
The support of the booklet or other Whereas I have described my inventions-by reference to specific forms thereof, it will be understood that many changes and modifications may be madewithout departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
The combination of a multi-sided package formed of an inner wrapper and a resilient outer wrapper, said outer wrapper being provided on one face of the package with a slit forming with the inner and outer wrappers a closed'pocket, and a packet of stacked cigarette papers'inserted in said slit and into said pocket, said packet of cigarette papers comprising an outer wrapping exposing the cigarette papers exteriorly of said slit, the edges ofsaid pocket being defined by said slit and exerting a binding force on said cigarette packet to hold said packet at all times within said pocket irrespective of the number of cigarette papers in said pocket, whereby to prevent accidental disengagement of said packet in said pocket, during the removal of a cigarette paper, the binding force of said edges being insufficient to prevent withdrawal by the user of said package of one of said cigarette papers seriatim as desired. a V
