Description
- This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 61/826,265 filed on May 22, 2013. The above identified patent application is herein incorporated by reference in its entirety to provide continuity of disclosure.
- 1. Field of the Invention
- The present invention relates to cabinets and furniture items. More specifically, the present invention relates to jewelry cabinets and devices for storing and organizing fashion accessories such that identification, retrieval, and orderly storage are facilitated.
- Jewelry and fashion accessory items can be particularly difficult to store in an orderly fashion. First, the variety of jewelry and accessory items on the market and their size and shape vary extensively. Articles that are adapted to be loose fitting or hang from the wearer tend to become easily tangled, while smaller items such as earrings, rings, and bracelets tend to become easily misplaced. Moreover, when these items are stored together or in close proximity, they can easily become entangled with each other, separated from corresponding pairs, or hard to retrieve amongst other articles. Hanging items in particular require a dedicated space such that the item can hang in a natural position.
- Along with requiring adequate storage space, many users desire an accessory storage means that provides easy access to certain items, whereby retrieval of desired items to match an outfit or to find a specific piece is facilitated. Many existing storage cabinets or jewelry boxes contain different types of organizers and hooks for different types of items; however few provide a means to coordinate jewelry according to their style and their type. Storing jewelry and other accessory items in an orderly fashion means that the user will not have to scavenge or search for specific style items while dressing, or struggle to locate a specifically desired item.
- There exist solutions in the art for the purposes of organizing and storing jewelry and accessory items, however most lack the combination of adequate storage space and coordinated storage that does not make subsequent retrieval of items difficult for the user. Most items in the art relate to jewelry boxes, wall-mounted storage racks with hooks and various supports, and finally cabinets of various size and construction. Most of these provide a singular means of storage that is appropriate for only one style of accessory, such as a sectioned cabinet drawer for smaller items or hooks specifically for hanging items.
- What is desired is a jewelry and accessory storage device that provides support and organization for different types of such items, while also providing orderly storage and organization that facilitates ready retrieval when dressing. The present invention is presented as such a solution, wherein a jewelry and accessory article cabinet is provided having both horizontal and vertical drawers to support smaller, loosely storage items and hanging, more elongated accessory items, respectively. The cabinet provides a color-matching system that allows a user to organize items by color and style, and thereby facilitate efficient retrieval of color-matched accessory items. For instances, a user can quickly match a set of earrings with a necklace without searching each drawer, as the items are organized by color and in a manner that prevents tangling or haphazard storage.
- 2. Description of the Prior Art
- Devices have been disclosed in the prior art that relate to jewelry cabinets and articles of furniture for accessory storage. These include devices that have been patented and published in patent application publications. The following is a list of devices deemed most relevant to the present disclosure, which are herein described for the purposes of highlighting and differentiating the unique aspects of the present invention, and further highlighting the drawbacks existing in the prior art.
- One such device of the prior art is U.S. Pat. No. 5,261,529 to Holland, which discloses an earring storage device that comprises a plurality of vertical panels that are suspended from retaining rods, whereby the panels comprises a mesh material suitable for supporting retaining the hooks of earrings thereon or for attaching strap earring supports. The hooks of earrings are positioned through the panel mesh, while the optional straps can be used to secure other jewelry items. The panels themselves are suspended from support rods, which can be hingedly supported from a support surface, or alternatively supported across the opening of a four-sided cabinet. The Holland device, while providing a novel means of supporting earrings and other jewelry items, provides a series of panels rather than a complete furniture or cabinet item. The present invention comprises a larger assembly that functions as a jewelry and accessory cabinet, whereby orderly storage and rapid retrieval are facilitated.
- Another device is U.S. Patent Publication No. 2012/0062087 to Havlock, which discloses a jewelry organizer that comprises at least one jewelry support card that is adapted to be supported by a turnstile carousel by the top of the card. Each card comprises a frame with one or more crossing bars and web panel, whereby the web panel includes a series of holes and openings for supporting jewelry items therefrom. The crossbars and webs are separated to provide support for larger, hanging items, while the cards are separated from one another by the turnstile carousel, wherein the assembly can be placed within a larger jewelry organizer article of furniture. While providing a device that employs planar (card) jewelry racks, the Havlock device contemplates supporting each of the racks via a turnstile device. The present invention is related to an article of furniture in similar style to a chest of drawers, wherein at least one vertical drawer is present that comprises a vertical jewelry support rack therein. The remaining horizontal drawers comprise divided interiors for loose storage thereof.
- U.S. Patent Publication No. 2003/0146678 to Greiner discloses a jewelry organizer that comprises a cabinet-like structure with pivotable cabinets and various jewelry stands and shelves located therein. The cabinets pivot into an open configuration such that a series of jewelry stands are accessible, each being slidable within the cabinet and suitable for supporting earrings and other items. Under the pivotable cabinets are a series of drawers and a pair of pivotable doors to conceal the drawers. The drawers include jewelry article supports, while the doors may also include hooks and other article supports thereon. In this way, the assembly functions as a multi-faceted jewelry article cabinet with several pivotable and slidable components. While providing a means of storage, the Greiner device fails to disclose slidable, vertical accessory item racks as provided herein, and further fails to contemplate a method of storage that facilitates ready retrieval of items based on the user's outfit and color choice.
- Finally, U.S. Pat. No. 6,425,647 to Pothin discloses a rounded, rotatable jewelry cabinet having interior storage capacity and supports for items therein, while the exterior is encased in glass doors. A plurality of drawers are arranged around the perimeter of the cabinet and arranged concentrically therein. Along the upper portion of the cabinet are hooks for supporting hanging items. Similar to the aforementioned devices, while the Pothin device describes a jewelry article support and storage assembly, its elements and purpose significantly diverge from those of the present invention. The present invention relates to a cabinet structure having slidably removable drawers, wherein one set of drawers provides for loose placement of items, while another provides for hanging articles. The assembly furthermore provides a color-coded system to organize jewelry and fashion accessory items for subsequent location and retrieval.
- The present invention relates to a new and novel jewelry cabinet and article of furniture. The device comprises a cabinet frame supporting a plurality of horizontal drawers and at least one vertical drawer, each drawer adapted to support and organize accessory items therein. The vertical drawers supporting hanging accessory items, while the horizontal drawers include internal dividers to support smaller, loosely stored items. The drawer knots and the supports for the hanging accessory items have a color scheme that allows the user to organize the accessory items in the cabinet by color or style, and further allows the user to match items from different drawers based on the color coding system.
- Overall, the present invention provides an improved means of organization for accessory items and a means of efficient retrieval thereof. It is submitted that the present invention is substantially divergent in design elements from the prior art, and consequently it is clear that there is a need in the art for an improvement to existing jewelry cabinet devices. In this regard the instant invention substantially fulfills these needs.
- In view of the foregoing disadvantages inherent in the known types of jewelry cabinets now present in the prior art, the present invention provides a new cabinet and organizational method that can be utilized for providing convenience for the user when storing and organizing accessory items in a cabinet furniture item.
- It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved jewelry cabinet device that has all of the advantages of the prior art and none of the disadvantages.
- It is another object of the present invention to provide a jewelry cabinet device that can support both loose items and hanging items in an organized fashion, whereby the items are not mixed together or easily tangled while being stored.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide a jewelry cabinet device that includes both horizontal and vertical drawers, each drawer type having a specific purpose and accessory type that it is adapted to support.
- Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a jewelry cabinet device that includes a color coding system that allows a user to easily identify the location of like-colored and like-styled accessory items across different drawers.
- Other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
- Although the characteristic features of this invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims, the invention itself and manner in which it may be made and used may be better understood after a review of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like numeral annotations are provided throughout.

- Referring now to
FIG. 1 , there is shown a front view of the jewelry and accessory cabinet of the present invention. The cabinet comprises acabinet frame 11 having afirst sidewall 14, asecond sidewall 15, a rear wall, anupper portion 13, and abase portion 12. Theframe 11 forms a substantially enclosed volume and is a substantially rectangular cuboid shape, similar to the shape of most cabinet furniture items in the art. The forward face of the frame is substantially open and accepts therethrough a plurality ofhorizontal drawers 31 and at least onevertical drawer 41. Both thehorizontal drawers 31 andvertical drawers 41 are slidably positioned within the frame interior via drawer sliders. Separating the horizontal 31 and vertical 41 drawers is adivider wall 17, whereby the two different drawer types are separated from one another. Thevertical drawers 41 are positioned between oneframe sidewall divider wall 17 along the outer extents of the cabinet front face. - Each of the drawers, including the vertical 41 and horizontal 31 drawers, comprises an outer surface that is flush with the forward face of the frame when in a closed state. Disposed on each of the drawers is a
hardware article key insert 33 for an internal locking mechanism, which locks an individual drawer or several drawers using a locking mechanism housed within the cabinet interior. In this way, the user can lock valuable jewelry and accessory items therein. - Referring now to
FIGS. 2 and 3 , there is shown views of the cabinet of the present invention in a partially open configuration, wherein the structure of thevertical drawers 41 and thehorizontal drawers 31 are shown. Referring specifically toFIG. 2 , thevertical drawers 41 comprise a drawer frame having arear frame member 44, alower frame member 46, aforward frame member 45, and one ormore cross members 48 extending between forward and rear frame members. The forward 45 and rear 44 frame members are affixed to aninner surface 50 and anouter drawer surface 43, whereby theouter drawer surface 43 is adapted to be flush with the forward face of the cabinet frame when thedrawer 41 is in a closed state. Thecross members 48, therear frame member 44 and theforward frame member 45 may comprise a rectangular frame bounded by theouter drawer surface 43, theinner frame surface 50 and alower frame surface 51. Alternatively the rectangular frame may bounded only by the outer drawer surface. The exact structural configuration may vary, falling within the scope of providing a vertically disposed drawer having anouter surface 43 flush with the forward face of the cabinet and one ormore cross members 48. - The
vertical drawers 41 are structures specifically adapted to support hanging jewelry and accessory items, while the horizontal drawers are adapted to support smaller items in defined bins. To that end, thevertical drawers 41 comprise one or moreinternal surfaces 49 designed to support necklaces, bracelets, and other elongated jewelry items in a suspended state within the interior of the cabinet. Referring toFIG. 2 , theupper surface 49 of thecross members 48 comprise a plurality ofnotches 49 therealong. Thenotches 49 are defined locations upon which one or moreremovable hooks 60 are positioned. Theremovable hooks 60 provide a means to attach one or more hanging jewelry items thereon, whereby anindividual hook 60 can be removed from thedrawer 41 such that a jewelry item can be viewed and selected. The jewelry articles hang from thehooks 60 while disposed on theupper surface 49 of the cross members, wherein the articles hang vertically within the vertical drawer frame. The notches are sufficiently separated to prevent tangling, and the cross members are vertically separated to prevent overlap of articles. The assembly is adapted to allow the user to open the vertical drawer from theouter hardware article 42 and inspect the jewelry articles positioned on the drawer prior to selection. - All drawers of the present invention are in slidable relationship with the cabinet frame such that they can be opened and closed with ease. Specifically,
drawer sliders 47 are provided along the ends of thevertical drawers 41 and along the sides or underside of thehorizontal drawers 31. Drawer sliders are well known assemblies that facilitate sliding of a drawer along a defined path using a bearing element, a channel, and telescoping members. This allows the drawer to extend to a given extent and be positioned within the interior of the furniture item with ease. This configuration is considered well known to those skilled in the art of furniture and cabinet structures. - Referring specifically to
FIG. 3 , there is shown a view of both thevertical drawers 41 and thehorizontal drawers 31 of the present invention in an open state. Thehorizontal drawers 31 are disposed adjacent to one or more vertical drawers and provide an enlarged area to support loose jewelry and accessory items therein. Thehorizontal drawers 31 comprise aforward face 34, sidewalls, a lower surface, and a rear wall forming a drawer structure with anopen interior 36 and an open upper. The interior 36 may be open or partitioned usinginternal dividers 35, which break the interior of the drawers into smaller bins. This allows the user to neatly store smaller items in specific locations within thedrawer 31 and prevents the items from sliding across the entire drawer lower surface. Thedividers 35 comprise one or more upstanding walls within thedrawer interior 36, which may comprise a single divider surface or several overlapping dividers that form multiple bins within which to locate individual pieces of jewelry. - It is desired to disclose an article of furniture or jewelry cabinet that includes both horizontal 31 and vertical 41 drawers; however it is contemplated that the exact layout and design of the present invention may vary. Specifically, it is contemplated that there may be one or more
vertical drawers 41 and one or morehorizontal drawers 31 disposed within the cabinet frame. As provided in the figures, the preferred embodiment comprises twovertical drawers 41 disposed between an internal divider wall and the outer sidewalls of the cabinet frame, while between the two internal divider walls are a plurality ofhorizontal drawers 31 disposed in a stacked configuration. Alternate configurations include a singlevertical drawer 41 adjacent to a divider wall and a stack of horizontal drawers, or more than twovertical drawers 41 disposed adjacent to narrowerhorizontal drawers 31. Along the exterior of each drawer is a hardware article, and each drawer includes one or more drawer sliders to facilitate smooth opening and closing thereof. - Referring now to
FIG. 5 , there is shown a close-up view of a vertical drawer and the accessory hooks 60 of the present invention. The accessory hooks 60 comprise anarcuate hook portion 62 and abody portion 65 that terminates at anenlarged knob 61. Thearcuate hook portion 62 provides a U-shaped member that can support and retain hangingaccessory items 100 in a suspended state therefrom. Thebody portion 65 of thehooks 60 is elongated and designed to nest within one of thenotches 49 provided along thecross member 48 or upper surface of the vertical drawer. In this way, thehooks 60 are used to support and organize hangingaccessory items 100, and provide a means to connect to the vertical drawer such that theaccessory items 100 are separated from one another and the items can dangle within the interior of the cabinet and within the frame of the vertical drawer. When the drawer is stowed, theaccessory items 100 hang from thehooks 60 and are positioned within the cabinet frame interior between thecabinet frame sidewall 14 and theinner divider wall 17. A user can open the drawer to inspect the hangingaccessories 100 and individually select ahook 60 with one ormore accessories 100 thereon. - Referring now to
FIG. 5 , there is shown a view that illustrates the accessory matching feature of the present invention and the inherent method of matching accessory items provided by the structure of the present invention. Thehardware articles 32 disposed on theouter surface 34 of each drawer comprises acolor indicator 38 thereon. The structure of thehardware article 32 may vary, but it is contemplated that each hardware article has aspecific color indicator 38 disposed along its outer surface. Similarly, theknob portion 61 of eachaccessory hook 60 comprises a rounded shape and a defined color. The colors of theknobs 61 and the hardware articles are adapted to be provided in matching pairs, where one ormore knobs 61 have a color that match one or moredrawer hardware articles 32. The goal of the color matching is to provide a user with the ability to color coordinate storage of her accessory items. Specifically, the user can store a certain style or color of accessory on a givencolored hook 60 and in a drawer with a specifically coloredhardware article 32. This allows the user to remove a specific hook and open a specific horizontal drawer, while at the same time being assured that the styles or colors of the drawer contents and thehook accessories 100 are matched with one another. This facilitates matching different types of jewelry and accessory items without searching through each drawer of the cabinet. - The method of the present invention comprises constructing a jewelry cabinet with one or more horizontal drawers and one or more vertical drawers, the horizontal drawers providing support for loose accessory items and the vertical drawers providing support for hanging accessory items. The method further contemplates providing hardware articles along the outer surface of each of the drawers and across drawer types. Hooks are utilized to support hanging accessory items, wherein the hooks comprise a colored knob. Finally, the hardware accessories are provided with a specifically colored indicator, whereby the indicator color matches at least one of the knob colors of the hooks. In this way, a user can organize accessory items by style and color to facilitate organized storage and efficient inspection of similar accessory items across different drawers.
- Referring now to
FIG. 6 , there is shown a view illustrating an alternate configuration for thevertical drawers 41 of the present invention. In this embodiment, the vertical drawer frame comprises a one of a verticaldrawer web surface 55, which is bounded on its inner and outer edges by theouter surface 43 and the inner surface of the drawer. Thenotches 49 that support the accessory hooks are disposed along theupper edge 56 of theweb surface 55 and are spaced therealong. Furthermore, one or more hingedaccessory support brackets 80 are disposed along theweb surface 55. Thesebrackets 80 comprise elongated members having a first end, a second end, anupper edge 82 and a plurality ofnotches 83 disposed therealong. The plurality of notches is used to support additional removable accessory hooks thereon. Thebrackets 80 are attached via hinge joints 81 to either theweb surface 55 or the interior surface of theouter drawer surface 43 and inner drawer surface of thevertical drawer 41. If attached to thedrawer web surface 55, the hinge is offset from theweb surface 55 to provide clearance for the hooks and their hook knobs. In this way, the alternative configuration of the vertical drawer provides a plurality of notches upon which to support hanging jewelry articles in a vertically spaced configuration thereon. - It can be challenging to maintain a well-organized jewelry storage system. Current solutions do not provide large capacity jewelry storage for bulky costume jewelry. As a result, many individuals have to use different storage or organization items to store different accessory items, such as boxes, door hooks, baggies, pegboards, closet pocket hangers, and other means. Storing jewelry in multiple locations makes it more difficult for individuals to have matching jewelry sets readily available. The lack of organization requires excessive time to find complimentary pieces of jewelry, which often ends in failure and frustration. Utilizing multiple storage methods can also be unnecessarily expensive and can take up excessive space on dressers, in drawers, or elsewhere. Generally, when items are removed from a jewelry box, armoire, or hanging pocket, there is no way to keep track of where an item is stored or which items are currently still missing from the organizational system.
- The present invention provides an accessory cabinet with a drawer system for storing and keeping track of different jewelry types, while at the same time facilitating coordinate of items across different drawers. The device enables individuals to quickly locate complementary and matching jewelry items via a color-coded system. The system utilizes a colored hardware article along on the front of each horizontal drawer, as well as pull out vertical drawers adjacent to the horizontal drawers that have color-coded hooks for hanging accessory items. The color-coding enables a user to select the horizontal drawer color that coordinates with the selected hook withdrawn from the vertical drawer while choosing accessories for an outfit. The top of the cabinet is preferably a flat surface that may serve as a staging area for placing jewelry prior to donning. It is submitted that the present invention enables viewing of large collections of jewelry, wherein every matching item is more readily distinguishable and easily accessible, thereby allowing a user to quickly locate complementary and matching jewelry items using an organized, color-coded cabinet system.
- The instant invention has been shown and described in what is considered to be the most practical and preferred embodiments. It is recognized, however, that departures may be made within the scope of the invention and that obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art. With respect to the above description then, it is to be realized that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of the invention, to include variations in size, materials, shape, form, function and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by the present invention.
- Therefore, the foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention.
