UNITED STATES rATENTf:OFFICE navroaroa s'ronmo aim arrixm amnasrva s'rmrs Wilhelm Voig't, WiesbadenJiiebrlch, em, assignor to Kalle a Co. Aktiengeaellschnft, Wiesbaden-Biebrich, Germany, a corporation of Germany Application January 21, 19:4, SerlaIN'e. mass In Germany February 9, 1933 r Claims. (CL 206-52) The present invention relates to devices for storing and aflixing adhesive strips.
One object of the present invention is a device for storing and aflixing adhesive strips hav- 5 ing a plastic adhesive coating, which device exhibits considerable advantages and which, whilst being constructed in a particularly compact and handy form, protects the adhesive strip from external influences and renders it possible to afiix and cut off the adhesive strip perfectly and accurately in the desired length in the simplest way with one hand only. The device consists of a suitable container or box which is provided in its interior with a roller or a non-movable cylinder carrying the adhesive strip and is further provided in its outlet opening with a pressing roller which serves for guiding the adhesive strip. This pressing roller alone projects laterally beyond the lateral outlines of the box and behind it at the 'end of the box a cutting off blade is arranged. Since the pressing roller can generally be made much smaller than the roller or the cylinder carrying the adhesive strip the box exhibits a very handy approximately oval form. The box is preferably made from an under part containing the carrier roller and the pressing roller as well as the cutting off blade and an upper part serving as closure of the box and is, when in use, entirely closed except for the lateral opening out oi which the smaller pressing roller projects-only however to the necessary extent. The pressing roller closes up the said opening except for two narrow slits. Through one of these slits the adhesive strip 35 emerges. If the box is passed in the flat position with slight pressure over an article or base, the adhesive strip will be stuck smoothly on to the base by the pressing roller. At the narrowed end of the box, which, as aforesaid, may for example be substantially oval, the cutting off blade, which is preferably constructed of toothed form, is arranged in such manner that when the box is tipped up out of the operative position the said blade automatically cuts off the emerging adhesive strip without damaging the base. This result is attained by arranging the cutting of! blade to project immediately behind the pressing roller to such an extent that when the boxis in the vertical position the cutting edge of the 50 blade is pressed into the drawn ofi adhesive strip, whilst at the same time the blade is maintained at a distance of about 1 to 2 mm. from the base by two projections located laterally to the blade. The accompanying drawing shows one con- 'structional form of the device according to the invention in approximately natural size.
Fig. 1 is a plan oi the device with the cover removed, and a Fix. 2 is a' section thereof taken on the line 5 The under part of the device is provided with a roller or with a stationary inwardly pressed cylinder I which serves for the reception of a roll of adhesive strip wound'upon a cardboard or 10 other support and retains and centres the roll of adhesive strip. in order that the roll of'adhesive strip should not adhere at its more or less sticky side suriaces to the interior of the box during the drawing of! operation inwardly l5 projecting annular surfaces 4 are provided on the under part 2 and the upper part 3 respectively, the said surfaces having an outer diameter which is not greater than that of the cardboard ring of the roll of adhesive strip. At the 20 narrowed end of the device in the outlet opening an easily running pressing roller 5 is arranged which renders it possible to roll the adhesive strip on to the base without difficulty.
When the device is manufactured from any 25 suitable artificial materials, such as, for example, bakelite" (registered trade-mark) or the like, the pin 6 which carries the pressing roller is preferably fitted in at the same time and the roller itself is prevented from falling out by means of a spring ring I. Immediately behind the pressing roller a toothed cutting ofl blade 8 V is arranged which is riveted tothe inner wall of the under part or is arranged so that it can be pushed in, in such manner that only the toothed edge projects beyond the lip of the box. The ends of the upper and lower parts are provided with projections 9 in such manner that the cutting edge lies within and is protected by the said projections. when the device is taken into 40 use it is grasped in such manner that the thumb rests on the middle of the cover, the middle finger in the recess of the under part and the index finger on the curved lip of the device. The roll of adhesive strip is placed in position in such manner that its commencement projects in front of the pressing roller of the device and that the side of the strip which is coated with adhesive is directed away from the said roller. The cutting or tearing oil of the adhesive strip is effected for instance by moving the device through about 90 upwardly, so that the pressing roller and the roll of adhesive strip are located in a vertical line, whereupon the under part of the device is caused to carry out a sudden horizontal movement, during which the part of the ship which hasbeenafllxedtothebaseisseparatedfromthe remainder of the roll by the toothed blade.
When the device is taken out of useand it is desired to carry it about in the pocket, the part of the adhesive strip projecting from the box is stuck by means of the adhesive coating to the adjacent lateral surface of the box. In order to facilitate the detachment of the end of the strip from the said surface the part of the latter coming into question may be grooved or rendered uneven in any other suitable manner.
I claim: I
