IM PROVEMENT N CARRIAGE-TOPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,706, dated March 26, 1878; application filed March 4, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEODORE SCATTER- GOOD, of Mankato, in the county of Blue Earth and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage- Tops, which is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of seat and center bow of a carriage-top embodying my improvement. Fig. 2is a sectional view of seat, showing the inner side of bow and. brace. Fig. 3 is a detail view of parts embodied in my improvement. Fig. 4 is a modification.

My invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in claim.

A represents the sides of a carriage-seat. B is the center bow, which supports the top, and is hinged to irons c, bolted to the inner sides of the seat. A jointed brace, d, is pivoted or hinged to the bow at d, and to irons e, which are secured to the seat. One part of this brace, at the joint, is provided with a circularshaped face, f, having serrations i. A thumbscrew, h, passes through the other part of the V brace, and may be turned to engage with the serrations, and thus set or fix the jointed brace at any angle, from which it will be seen the top may be set and retained in any de sired position.

Instead of providing only one part of the brace at the joint with a serrated plate, as just described, both parts may have such a plate, as shown in Fig. 4, the serrated faces coming together and clamped or held to position by the thumb-screw, which passes through the center. This jointed brace may be worked in either direction, forward or backward, and is applicable to topshaving three or more bows.

Having described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved adjustment for carriagetops, the jointed brace d, pivoted to the bow and to irons secured to the seat, one part being provided at the joint with a circularshaped face, f, having serrations c', and the other part with a thumb-screw, h, to engage with the serrations, as and for the purpose specified.
