Description

Feb. 4, 1936. A. D. COLLETTE TABLE COVERING Filed NOV. 22, 1953 A TTORNE Y.
Patented Feb. 4, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a table top covering which is readily attachable and detachable and particularly pertains to a covering for an ironing board or the like, whereby the covering may be readily attached to the table top and then readily detached when it is desired to remove the covering for laundering.
The invention accordingly consists in the features, combinations and arrangements of parts,
all of which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described or claimed for carrying out the above stated objects and such other objects as will hereinafter appear in the description.
Heretofore it has been the practice to apply a covering to a table top or ironing board, or the like, the covering being of sufficient size to extend beyond the edges of the table; then the edges of the covering are either pinned, laced or otherwise fastened to secure the covering to the table top or ironing board. All such means of fastening is, of course, cumbersome andrequires considerable time for attaching the covering to the table and removing the covering therefrom. It is the aim of the present invention to provide the covering with a fastening device which may be readily and conveniently manipulated to secure the table covering in place and to remove same from the table.
For a better understanding of the invention reference may be made to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view of an ironing board covered with a covering embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of an ironing board of conventional design; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly in cross section, of the underside of the ironing board showing the covering secured in place.
Referring specifically to the drawing, numeral 1 designates a conventional ironing board comprising-a table top 2 supported on standards 3 and 4, which are connected by hinges to the table top so that they may be collapsed when the table is not in use. Braces 5 are associated with the standards 3 and 4 and when the table is set up these braces are adapted to engage with a stud or other means 6 fixed to the bottom 5 of the table top 2.
Covering I is made in sizes to conform to the ironing board or any other table top which it is desired to use in conjunction with the covering. This table covering may be formed of any ma- 65 terial and is typified in the present application by fibrous material, such as duck fabric material formed from a blank.
The covering may comprise a body portion 8 terminating in side portions 9 and I0 and an end portion H. These side and end portions are 5 folded underneath the body portion and are fastened by some such means as stitchingat seams l2, thereby forming around the body portion what may be conveniently designated as a marginal portion or portions. The edges of side po-r- 1o tions 9 and iii are adapted to be brought in abutting relation to form an opening or placket which may be opened and closed by a fastening device it comprising oppositely disposed rows of narrowly spaced projecting pins adapted to be brought into overlapping interlocking relation and secured or released by a clasp M which is readily reciprocated'along the projecting pins. The side edge portions 9 and i8 preferably may be recessed at [5 to accommodate the standards ,20
3 and 4 which support the table top 2, and it may be further recessed at Hi to accommodate the braces 5 and stud 6.
From the above description of a conventional ironing board table and a table top covering em- 25 bodying the present invention, it will be readily apparent that the table top covering may be readily attached to the table top by opening the fastening l3 to the extreme rightend of the covering. The covering may then be readily 30 slipped over the table top, after which the fastening is drawn to the closed position shown in Fig.
3, thereby drawing the side portions 9 and I0 into abutting relation and securing the covering to the table top. This fastening permits ready 35 attachment and detachment of the covering to and from the table top.
The table top covering has been described with reference to an ironing board of conventional design, but it will be understood that while the 4 table top covering is particularly adapted for this use, it also may be used in connection with any table top which is of a construction adapted to receive same.
While I have described one preferred embodi- 45 ment in detail it will be understood that such detailed construction is for the purpose'of illustration and not as a limitation of the invention. Various changes may be made in details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A readily attachable and detachable covering comprising a body portion having edges forming marginal portions adapted to fit over and under the edges of a table and provide a placket between their abutting edges, said marginal portions permitting the covering to be applied to the table with said portions close together, a fastening element including a slidable clip cooperating with a single group of pin fastener elements extending without interruption throughout the length of the placket for drawing the covering snugly about the table, one of the marginal portions being provided with an opening separated from said placket whereby to accommodate a removable brace element which is adapted to be applied to the underside of the table through said opening after the cover is in place.
2. A readily attachable and detachable covering comprising a body portion having edges forming marginal portions adapted to fit over and under the edges of a table and provide a placket between their abutting edges, said marginal por' tions permitting the covering to be applied to the table with said portions close together, a fastening element including a slidable clip cooperating With a single group of pin fastener elements extending without interruption throughout the length of the placket for drawing the covering snugly about the table, one of the marginal portions being provided with an opening separated from said placket whereby to accommodate a removable brace element which is adapted to be applied to the underside of the table through said opening after the cover is in place, and a recess formed in the marginal portions at the extremity of the placket to accommodate a table leg.
ANTOINETTE D. COLLET'IE.
