This invention relates .to partitions used in live-stock cars for segregating the stock during transportation, .and my object is to devise simple and inexpensive means for securing one or more partitions at any desired position throughout the length of the car without providing the latter with any permanent attachments on the sides thereof.
-I attain my object by providing each partition with :a plurality of pairs or sets of clamp jaws,
. each set being adapted to be clamped on the opposite edges of aside slat of the car. Each pair of clamp jaws are pivoted on a lever in spaced relationship to one another. The partition is provided with two eye bolts arranged one above the other at each end of the partition. On these eye bolts are swivelly carried suitable linkage for carrying the levers. The levers may thus be moved into and out of position for engaging their clamp jaws with a side slat and the jaws on the upper and lower levers are so arranged that they will be brought into clamping engagement with the slats when the free ends of the levers are drawn towards one another.
The constructions are hereinafter more fully described and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of part of a stock car showing my partition therein;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 22 in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 a vertical section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
In the drawing like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the diflerent figures.
I is a partition adapted to extend cross-wise of a stock-car 2 for dividing the latter into a number of separate compartments, the number of compartments depending on the number of partitions used. The partitions may be carried on an overhead track or cable 3 running lengthwise of the roof I2 of the car to facilitate the shifting of the partitions.
Each of the partitions may be made of any suitable material and is provided with two eye bolts 4 arranged one above the other at each end of the partition. In the eyes of these bolts are connected links 5 having bifurcated ends 5 adapted to receive the flattened ends 6 of pins 6. The end 6* engages one side of a lever and the free end of the pin is upset to engage the other side of the lever. The ends 5 of each link are pivoted on an end 6 of a pin to form connections between the links 5 and levers I. On each lever are carried a pair of clamp jaws 8, 8 which if pivoted on the lever will be spaced apart longitudinally thereof and arranged so that .as .the levers on each end of the partition are rocked towards one another the clamp jaws of .eachset will be also moved inwardly towards one another to engage the opposite edges of a slot .2 of the stock-car 2.
The free end of each of the levers 'l .is provided with a chain :9 and the chain on one of the levers at each :end of the partition .is provided with a toggle connector .10 adapted to engage the end link or a special link H on the end of the other 10 chain whereby the free ends of the levers may be drawn towards one another. .The toggles will be retained, by any suitable means such as loops l2 carried :by the other chains in their contracted position to ,flrmly .lock the jaws :8, 18* on the side slats 2 Preferably the jaws 8, 8 will be channel shaped in cross-section to pass over the edges of the slats and overlie portions of the outer sides thereof. The outer flanges 8 of the jaws will, of course, be 20 shorter than the inner flanges thereof which are connected with the levers I.
From this description it is obvious that the jaws may be clamped at any desired point, on the side slats 2 by merely passing the jaws laterally through the spaces between the slats and fastening the chains 9 at each side of the car together. To adjust the lengths of the chains to suit different cars, I provide a threaded connection 9 between one of the chains of each set of chains and its lever 1.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a partition; levers having pivotal connections with said partition to swing in a vertical plane; clamp members carried by said levers for engagement with side slats of a stock-car; and means connecting the levers to rock the same to force the clamp members into engagement with the slats.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a partition; levers having pivotal connections with said partition to swing in a vertical plane; clamp members carried by said levers for engagement with side slats of a stockcar, the said connections including provisions for enabling the levers and thus the clamp members to be swung in a horizontal plane for positioning the latter for engagement with the side slats; and means connecting the levers to rock the same to force the clamp members into engagement with the slats.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a partition having a plurality of eye bolts; a plurality of levers; swivel connections between the eye bolts and levers; clamp members carried by the levers for engagement with the side slats of a stock-car; and means connecting the levers to rock the same to force the clamp members into engagement with the slats.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a partition; levers having pivotal connections with said partition to swing in a vertical plane; a pair of clamp jaws carried by each lever for engaging the opposite edges of a side slat of a stock car, the levers being arranged one above the other at opposite ends of the partition; and means for drawing the levers at each end of the partition towards one another and for retaining the levers in position to bring the jaws into clamping engagement with the slats.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a partition having a plurality of eye bolts; a plurality of levers; swivel connections between the eye bolts and levers; a pair of clamp jaws pivoted on each lever in spaced relationship to one another longitudinally of the lever for engaging the opposite edges of a side slat of a stock-car; and means connecting the levers to rock the same to force the clamp members into engagement with the slats.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a partition having two eye bolts arranged one above the other at each end of the partition; a plurality of levers; swivel connections between the eye bolts and levers; a pair of clamp jaws pivoted on each lever in spaced relationship to one another longitudinally of the lever for engaging the opposite edges oi. a side slat of a stock-car; and means for drawing the levers at each end of the partition towards one another and for retaining the levers in position to bring the jaws into clamping engagement with the slats.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination of a partition having two eye bolts arranged one above the other at each end of the partition; a plurality of levers; swivel connections between the eye bolts and levers; a pair of clamp jaws pivoted on each lever in spaced relationship to one another longitudinally of the lever for engaging the opposite edges of a side slat of a stock-car; and means including flexible members and a toggle for drawing the levers at each end of the partition towards one another and for retaining the levers in position.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination of a partition; two levers swingably connected one above the other to each end of the partition; a pair of jaws carried by each lever for engaging the opposite edges of a side slat of a stock-car when the lever is swung; and means connecting the levers in pairs to rock the same to force the clamp members into engagement with the slats.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination of a partition; clamp members rockably connected to the partition in pairs, the clamps of each pair being adapted respectively to engage the top side and under side of a side slat of a stock-car to cramp on the same by a rocking movement; and means connecting the clamps for efiecting the said rocking movement.
