v 1 Claim. This invention relates to a new and useful device for dispensing plastic toilet preparations such as shaving cream', cold cream, vanishing cream, tooth paste and the like and has for its primary object a mechanical arrangement Whereby a slight turn of the knurled cap of the dispenser causes the ejection of the desired quantity of the cream or paste upon the bristles of a brush or into the hand Without waste of the toilet material and with a minimum effort on the part of the operator.
Another object of this invention is to provide a means for quickly and conveniently inserting a rell of the plastic toilet material into the dispensing mechanism, thus facilitating an uninterrupted and ready application of the device by the operator.
A further object of this invention comprises a means whereby a slight turn of the knurled cap of the dispenser induces an abrupt cessation in the flow of the plastic substance, thus eliminating undue waste of the toilet material and also preventing the unsightly appearance that may result from leakage.
For the purpose of illustrating this invention there is shown in the accompanying drawing one form thereof which is at present preferred, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which this invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that this invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the dispensing device.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the dispensing device with a refill attached.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the propelling screws and plunger of the dispensing device.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the housing of the dispensing device.
Fig. 5 is a sectional View on line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, in which similar numeral references indicate corresponding parts, I is a hollow plunger fabricated of aluminum or other suitable material into which the larger screw 2 is threadedly inserted. The plunger I moves freely in the collar 3 which is slotted at 4 to accommodate the key 5 which is rigidly attached to the plunger I. Guide pins S guide the key 5 into the slotted track 4. A stop 'I limits the stroke of the plunger I within the collar 3 to (ci. azi- 79) the distance between the extremities of the collar 3. -The housing 8 consists of a hollow cylinder of aluminum or other suitable material closed at the one end with the top 9 which is circularly perforated at It? and open at the other end II which is threaded to engage the refill I2. The housing has rigidly mounted on its inner surface the key I3 through one end of which is inserted the stop I4. The slot "I of the collar 3 engages with the key I3, thus holding the collar 3 to a given line of travel that is restricted by the stop I4.
The smaller screw I5 threadedly engages with the larger screw 2. The screw 2 is faced with the circular bearing plate I5 which presses against l5 the inner surface of the top 9 of the housing 3. The screw I5 terminates beyond the plate I5 in an unthreaded portion Il, which engages with the perforation Ill of the top 9. The unthreaded portion I ends in a threaded section I8 with which the screw I9 engages for the purpose of securely fastening the knurled cap to the screw I5. A pin 2I is mounted on 'the unthreaded portion Il and engages with the hole 22 in the knurled cap 2t in order that the screw I5 will rotate with a 25 turning of the cap 20.
The numeral I2 indicates a refill tube fabricated of aluminum, glass or other suitable material and adapted to contain cold cream, shaving cream, tooth paste or the like. The rell tube I2 thread- 30 edly engages with the housing 3 as indicated in Fig. 2.
A floating piston 23 fits closely in the cylindrical rell tube I2 and travels with the plunger I, forcing the contents of the rell tube I2 before it and causing the contents to be ejected through the orifice 24 that may be variously designed.-
The operation of this device is as follows:
When a refill tube of cream is to be attached to the housing 8 the screws 2 and I5 are retreated as far as possible in the hollow plunger I. With the piston 23 placed in direct contact with the contents of the refill I2 the attachment of the aforesaid housing 8 to the refill tube I2 is then readily effected. In order that some of the material in the rell tube I2 may be expelled through the orice 24 the knurled cap 20 is rotated slightly counter-clockwise and in consequence the screw I5 withdraws from the screw 2 land forces the plunger I and the piston 23 downwardly should the dispensing device be mounted in an upright position. As vthe contents of the refill tube I2 are gradually expelled the screw I5 comes to the end of its stroke and Cai then the screw 2 proceeds to Withdraw from the plunger I, forcing the plunger I and the piston 23 farther down the cylinder of the refill tube I2. After any desired quantity of cold cream or tooth paste has been ejected, the operator can sharply cut off the issuing substance by rotating the knurled cap 20 slightly clockwise. The consistency of the material in the refill is such and the piston 23 ts its bore so snugly that a partial vacuum is created within the refill, thereby promoting an abrupt cessation of the flow of plastic material. Since an overwhelming majority of individuals are right-handed, it becomes obvious that the ordinarily right-handed individual will grasp his tooth brush or shaving brush with his right hand and naturally and effortlessly apply his left hand to the knurled cap 20 to produce a counter-clockwise rotatory movement for the purpose of spreading the toilet preparation to a brush.
Although this invention in its present embodiment applies more specifically to the dispensing of toilet preparations of an appreciable consistency, yet its application to the dispensing of more varied plastic materials can be made with little modification.
I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specic forms Without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof; accordingly I desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and restrictive, reference being directed to the appended claim rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A device of`the character described and comprising a floating piston and a plunger, a key mounted longitudinally on said plunger, a longitudinally slotted collar adapted to slide along aforesaid key and having a slotted ilange at one end, a hollow cylindrical housing having a rotatable and independent cap at one end and a threaded open end adapted to engage a cylindrical refill tube, a key in said housing and adapted to slide through aforesaid slotted flange and a nest of screws actuated by aforesaid rotatable cap and adapted to propel aforesaid plunger and piston through aforesaid refill tube.
