This invention relates to a safety razor and refers more particularly to safety razors uclonsisting -of a single piece.
An object of the present invention is the provision of a safety razor of that type in which the handle, the guard member and the clamp member are all permanently connected together, said safety razor being of simple and inexpensive construction.
Another object is the provision of a safety razor having blade holding members, the pressure of which against the blade may be conveniently and easily adjusted.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a safety razor consisting of a Single piece which may be used in connection with blades of a wide variety of designs.
The above and other objects of the present invention may be realized through the provision of a safety razor comprising a pair of blade holding members which are connected with each other by a hinge or the like and which is operated to clamp a blade by means of a lever pivotally mounted on the handle of the safety razor.
The invention will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing showing preferred embodiments of the inventive idea.

The safety razor illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6 of the drawing comprises four main parts, namely, a handle ID, a guard member II, a clamp member I2 and a sleeve I3, carried by the handle IIJ.
The handle I0 is hollow and is rmly connected at one of its ends with the guard member l I, the
opposite end of the handle having the form of a hollow cylindrical casing I4.
The sleeve I3 is rotatably mounted upon the handle IIJ and isheld in its position upon said handle by the abutments I4 and I5. A groove II 5 is formed upon an inner surface of the sleeve I3 (Fig. 5), and a spring 24 is preferably situated within the groove I 'I in order to prevent the sleeve I3 from moving too freely.
The clamp I2 is provided with two projecting l0 portions I8v andV I9, while the adjacent parts of the guard member are provided Ywith corresponding cavities or cut-out portions 20 and 2|.
In the closed position of the safety razor shown in Fig. 5, both projections I8 and I9 are situated 15 within the cut-out portions 2| and 20, respectively. A pin 2|a is mounted within the guard member and passes through the cut-out por- .tion 20. The pin 2Ia passes through a slot 22 formed inthe projection I8 of the clamp member I2.
A small spring 23 is situated within the slot 22 so that at the time the safety razor is opened, the adjacent edge of the clamp member I2 is situated slightly above the razor blade, with the 25 result that the clamp member I2 does not have the tendencyto throw off the blade while the member I 2 swings around the pivot 2 la.
The clamping member I2 carries a stud 25 comprising a narrower cylindrical portion 26 and a 30 Wider lower portion 2'I, provided with converging surfaces.
In the closed position of the safety razor the stud 25 is situated within the interior of a hollow chamber 28 forming a continuation of the in- 35 terior 23 of the hollow handle III.
The stud 25 is adapted@ to be clamped by a pair of gripping members 30 and 3| which are slidably and movably mounted withinthe handle I0.
As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the gripping members 30 and 3| are carried by members 33 and 34, respectively, which have a smaller diameter than the gripping members 30 and 3|, and which are interconnected by a cylindrical piece 32 so that 45 they form-two resilient arms of a U-shaped member. In the closed position of the safety razor, the gripping members 30 and 3| are partly situated within the chamber 29, which has a smaller diameter than the chamber 28.
While in the closed position of the safety razor the two gripping members 30 and 3| are pressed against each other by the side walls of the chamber 29, these gripping members will tend to spread apart as soon as they are moved into the chamber 28 having a larger diameter than the chamber 29. Due to this arrangement, the gripping members 3D and 3| clamp the stud 25 in the lower position of the movable cylinder 32, while in the upper position of this cylinder the gripping members 30 and 3| have been moved into the chamber 2B where they spread apart and free the stud 25.
The member 32 is moved within the handle I6 by means of a lever 36. As shown in Figs. 5 and 3 the lever 36 is rotatably mounted upon a pin 3l which is carried by the handle I0 adjacent to its end portion I4. The lever 36 is situated in a slot 56 formed in the handle I0 and is provided with a narrow end portion 38 which is pressed by the sleeve |-3- toward the interior of the handle I6 in the closed position of the safety razor (Fig. 5).
As shown more clearly in Figs. l, 2 and 3 the sleeve I3 is provided with two cam surfaces 39 and 4|! whichare joined by a rectangular opening 4|. On the other side of the sleeve I3 the cam surfaces 39 and 4D are joined by a surface 42, which remains in Contact with the abutment I4 during the rotation of the sleeve I3 around the handle I0.
The lever 36 is provided with an arm portion 42 which is situated within an opening 43 formed in the cylinder 32. When the lever 36 is moved in a direction toward the handle I0, its surface 44 presses against the adjacent Wall of the member 32 and moves the member 32 downwardly in a direction toward the casing I4.
A spring 46 is situated within the casing I4 and presses against the lower end of the cylinder 32, thereby tending to move the member 32 upwardly and to move the lever 36 in its opened position, shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
The guard member II is provided with the usual pair of abutments 48 and 49, shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and used to prevent a shifting of the razor blade upon the guard member II.
To lock the safety razor in its operative position, it is merely necessary to place a razor blade upon the guard member I I in such manner that the abutments 48 and 49 pass through suitable openings formed in the razor blade. It is also necessary that the razor blade be provided with openings corresponding to the openings 26 and 2| formed in the guard member Then the clamp member I2 is moved from its open position shown in Fig. 3 to its closed position above the guard member II and the blade. In this position, which is shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the stud 25 is situated between the gripping members 39 and 3|, and the projection I9 carried by the clamp member I2 is situated within the opening 2| of the guard member II. Then the lever 36 is swung around its pivot 3'I in a direction toward the handle I0 against the action of the spring 46 which tends to maintain the lever 36 in its open position, shown in Fig. 3.
When the lever 36 is moved from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 5, the arm 42 of the lever 36 is moved downward, thereby pulling downward the member 32 and compressing the spring 46. During this movement of the member 32, the gripping members 30 and 3| are also moved to the same extent and are pressed against each other by the inner walls of lthe chamber 29, which are smaller in diameter than those of the chamber 28. The gripping members 36 and 3| are thus caused to clamp tightly the stud 25 and to pull the stud 25 downwardly, whereby the razor blade is clamped between the guard member and the clamping member I2.
Obviously, when it is desired to lock the safety razor, the opening 4| of the sleeve I3, should be situated above the slot 56 formed in the handle I6. When the lever 36 is moved inside the slot 56, its end 38 should be moved to a position beyond the sleeve I3, so that this end can be conveniently locked merely by turning the sleeve I3 until its opening 4I is moved beyond the slot 56. In this position, the inner walls of the sleeve I3 hold in place the end 38 of the lever 36, as shown in Fig. 5.
The end 38 is connected with the main portion of the lever 36 by an intermediate slanting surface 5I. Due to the provision of slanting carn surfaces 46 and 39 of the sleeve I3, the position of the lever 36 within the slot 56 may be slightly varied by turning the sleeve I3, whereby different portions of the cam surfaces 40 and 4|v are brought in contact with different portions of the slanting surface 5|, of the lever 36. Since each position of the lever 36 corresponds to a certain position of the member 32 and to a certain amount of pressure exerted by the gripping members 30 and 3| upon the stud 25, each position of the lever 36 will correspond to a certain amount of pressure eX- erted by the clamping member I2 upon the guard member Il, and upon the blade situated between the guard member II and the clamping member I2. Therefore, by shifting slightly the sleeve I3 in the closed position of the safety razor it 1s possible to vary the pressure to which the blade is subjected and thus to change the position of the blade between the guard member Il and the clamping member I2.
In order to open the safety razor it is merely necessary to turn the sleeve I3. At the time when the opening 4I of the sleeve I3 passes above the end 38 of the lever, the spring 46 will automatically push the member 32 upward so that the lever 36 will swing in a direction away from the handle l0 to the position shown in Fig. 3 and the clamping member |2 will swing around the pin 2| to the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
The safety razor illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawing comprises a handle I0, a guard member 6I and a clamp member 62 provided with two projecting portions 63 only one of which is shown in the drawing. 'Ihe guard member 6I is connected with the clamp member 62 by means of a lever 64, one end of which pivots around a pin 65 carried by the guard member 6I. The opposite end of the lever 64 is pivotally connected with one of the projections 63 by means of a pin 66.
A similar lever 64 which is not shown in the drawing is situated at the other side of the safety razor.
The lever 64 carries a stop or pin 6l which comes in contact with an edge of the guard member 6I when the clamp member 62 is moved upward thus limiting the extent to which the lever 64 can swing around the pivot 65. The device is operated in substantially the same manner as that illustrated in Figs. l to 6, and may be used in connection with razor blades of any standard design.
In the modication shown in Fig. 8, the clamp member 'I6 is pressed against the guard member 'Il by means of two separate gripping members 'I2 and 'I3 supported by a pivot 'I4 which is carried by a hollow cylindrical member 'I5 movably ac'nsases `mounted within the handle 16 of the safety razor.

A safetyrazor, comprising a hollow handle, a guard member connected with said handle, a clamping member, a stud carried by said clamping member and adapted to'project into the interior of said handle in the closed position of the safetyY razor, means pivotally, connecting said clamping member with said guard member, a lever pivotally mounted in said handle, a cylindrical member movably mounted within the interior of said handle, a pair of resilient members carried by the last-mentioned member and movable therewith, a pair of gripping members, each gripping member being carried by a separate resilient member and being movable therewith, a chamber having a larger diameter than the interior of said handle and forming a continuation thereof, said chamber being formed within said handle adjacent to said guard member, said gripping members being pressed against each other in the interior of said handle and being adapted to move away from each other in said chamber, said lever having an arm projecting into an opening formed in the cylindrical member, a spring situated within said handle and pressing against the cylindrical member, and means for locking said lever in the .operative closed position of the safety razor.

A safety razor, comprising a hollow handle, a guard member connected with said handle, a clamping member, means pivotally connecting said clamping member with said guard member, a lever pivotally mounted in said handle, means operatively connected with said lever and situated within said handle for pressing said clamping member against said guard member in the operative closed position of the safety razor, and a sleeve rotatably mounted upon said handle and having a slot formed therein for the passage of said lever, said sleeve being adapted to lock said lever in the operative closed position of the safety razor, said sleeve having slanting cam surfaces adjacent to said slot, said lever having a slanting surface which is in contact with one of the slanting cam surfaces of said sleeve in the locked position of said lever.

A safety razor, comprising a hollow handle, a guard member connected with said handle, a clamping member, means pivotally connecting said clamping member with said guard member, a lever pivotally mounted in said handle, means operatively connected with said lever and situated Within said handle for pressing said clamping member against said guard member in the operative closed position of the safety razor, a sleeve rotatably mounted upon said handle, and having a slot formed therein for the passage of said lever, said sleeve being adapted to lock said lever in the operative closed position of the safety razor, said sleeve having slanting cam surfaces adjacent to said slot, said lever having a slanting surface which is in contact with one of the slanting cam surfaces of said sleeve in the locked position of said lever, a groove being formed upon the adjacent surfaces of said sleeve and said handle, and a spring situated within* said groove.
4. A safety razor, comprising a hollow handle,
Va guard member connected with said handle',Y a Aclamping member, a lever having one end pivotally connected with said clamping member and another end pivotally connected with said guard member, a stop Ycarried by said lever and adapted to come 'in contact with said guard member,
another lever pivotally mounted in said handle,
and means operatively connected with the second-mentioned lever and situated within said handle for pressing said clamping member against said guard member in the operative closed position of the safety razor.
5. lA safety razor, comprising a hollow handle, a guard member connected with said handle, a clamping member, means pivotally connecting said clamping member with said guard member, a lever pivotally mounted in said handle, a member movably mounted within said handle and operatively connected with said lever, a pair of gripping members pivotally mounted upon said member and adapted to grip said clamping member, a pin, and a spring situated within said member and pressing said pin against said gripping members.

A safety razor, comprising a hollow handle, a guard member connected with said handle, a clamping member adapted to hold a razor blade firmly against said guard member, a reciprocable gripping member resiliently mounted in said hollow handle adapted to engage said clamping member, a lever pivoted in said handle for reciprocating said gripping member whereby the engagement between said gripping member and said clamping member may be established and released, and a sleeve rotatably mounted upon said handle and having a slot formed therein for the passage of said lever, said sleeve being adapted to lock said lever in operative closed position of the safety razor.

A safety razor, comprising a hollow handle, a guard member connected with said handle, a clamping member hinged to said guard member for pressing a razor blade against said guard member, a stud carried by said clamping member adapted to project into said hollow handle in closed position of the safety razor, a reciprocable gripping member resiliently mounted in said hollow handle adapted to engage said stud in closed position of the razor, a lever pivoted in said handle for reciprocating said gripping member whereby the engagement between said gripping member and said clamping member may be made or broken, a sleeve rotatably mounted on said handle and having a slot formed for the passage of said lever, said sleeve being adapted to lock said lever in the operative closed position of the safety razor, said sleeve having slanting cam surfaces adjacent to said slot, said lever having a slanting surface which is in contact with one of the slanting cam surfaces of the said sleeve in the locked position of said lever.
8. A safety razor, comprising a hollow handle,V
a guard member connected with said handle, a clamping member adapted to hold a razor blade firmly against said guard member a projection forming part of said clamping member and projecting into an opening formed in said guard member, a pin carried by said clamping member CII passing through a slot formed in said projection, a spring in said slot, a reciprocable gripping member resiliently mounted in said hollow handle adapted to engage said clamping member in closed position of the razor, a lever pivoted in said handle for reciprocating said gripping member whereby the engagement between said gripping member and said clamping member may be made and broken and whereby the pressure of the clamping member against said razor blade may be regulated.

A safety razor comprising a guard member and a hollow handle connected to said guard member, a clamping member adapted to hold a razor blade against said guard member, a stud carried by said clamping member and adapted to project into said hollow handle when the razor is in operative condition, a gripping member resiliently mounted in said hollow handle, said gripping member comprising two flexible prongs, the ends of which being adapted to engage said stud, means within said handle forming an enlarged chamber adjacent said guard member whereby connection between said head and said stud may be established and ay shoulder in said chamber whereby said stud will be firmly gripped ,by said head upon reciprocation of said gripping member and a lever pivoted in said handle for reciprocating said gripping member, whereby the connection between said gripping member and said clamping member may be made and broken.
10. A safety razor comprising a guard member and a hollow handle connected to said guard member, a clamping member adapted to hold a razor blade against said guard member, an engagement member carried by said clamping member, a reciprocable gripping member resiliently mounted in said hollow handle, said member comprising a exible head adapted to engage said engagement member and means within said hollow handle for pressing said head against said engagement member, upon reciprocation of said gripping member and a lever pivoted in said handle for reciprocating said gripping member whereby the connection between said gripping member and said clamping member may be made and broken.
