Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
i FRANK FOSS, OF LYNN,'MASSAOHU'SETT S.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,374, dated June 25, 1878 application filed April 27, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK Foss, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful or Improved Horse-Brush, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification, referencebeing had to the accompanying draw- 1n g. i
Figure 1 represents a plan of the face of my said brush; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3, a cross-section.
Heretofore in the class of rubber brushes and curry-combs the teeth have been made conical, and in consequence of which the teeth were so flexible as to be of little account, except when supported or stiffened with metal points or wires, which were more or less irritating to the animal upon which they were used.
My invention is intended to obviate the defects incident to the construction of brushes or combs having conical points without the aid of metal points, and at the same time produce a brush in which the teeth are self-sustaining; and to this end the invention consists in a horsebruslnas a new article of manufacture, having a molded elastic back integral with rows of short broad-based pyramidal projections formed upon its face, and also formed upon its back, as a constituent part thereof, two lugs or ears, to which is attached a handloop, all as hereinafter more fully described.
In'the drawing, A represents a flexible and elastic back of a horse-brush, molded from iubber or analogous material, and having formed upon its face rows of pyramidic projections b 11, whose bases are sufficiently broad in proportion to the height to give proper support and elasticity to the projections, and so disposed and arranged upon the back A as to present penetrating corners as well as points in all'directions; and also formed upon said back A, and as a constituent part thereof, two lugs or ears, 0 c, to which is attached a handloop, 11, of leather, secured thereto by rivets e c, as shown, for the purpose of supporting the brush upon the back of the and when in use. This brush, being upon s face entirely nonmetallic, is soft and agreeable to the animal, and, by reason of the peculiar formation and arran gement of its brushing-surface, is unusually .efi'ective in cleaning the skin and hair of a horse, much more so than metallic or rubber brushes with rubber points supported or stift ened by metallic points, and which also irritate the horse or animal while being used thereon. It is also more readily freed from dust and hair by a simple rap, and may be washed perfectly clean in a moment without injury to any part of it.
, I claim as my invention- As a new article of manufacture, the hereindescribed brush, consisting of a molded elastic back, A, integral with rows of short broadbased pyramidal projections b 1) upon its face, and upon its back, as a constituentpart thereof, two lugs or ears, 0 c, to which is attached a hand-loop, substantially as specified.
FRANK FOSS.
