The obj ect of the present invention is to provide va highly absorbent hygienic catamenial tampon of simple and inexpensive construction adapted to be easily applied and readily removed and disposed of, and which will be inconspicuous and easily carried.

A further object of the invention is to provide a hygienic catamenial tampon of 'absorbent spun cotton completely deodorized and uantisepticized in manufacture and forming an eilicient packplug for internal absorption, whereby greater convenience, comfort and freedom from the 'inconveniences and annoyance of previous methods are completely eliminated'.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, yillustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the' claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit. or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the hygienic catamenial tampon consists of a substantially cylindrical body l of vabsorbent spun cotton having a slight taper from the outer to the inner endprovided at the inner end with a reversely tapered trunco-conical portion 2 and having an outer enlarged terminal portion or head 3 oi greater diameter than the cylindrical body portion.

'I'he body portion l which is circular in cross section is provided with a covering 4 consisting o! a soluble iilm and provided at intervals with perforatons 5. The lm 4 may be made of any suitable material adapted to be dissolved by secretions and the perforations 5 of the iilm permit secretions or flow to be absorbed as the lm Y is being dissolved.

When the nlm is dissolved the highly absorbent tampon will be made of a-size to approximately absorb two-thirds of a iluid ounce so that it may remain for a considerable period of time in use without necessitating any replacement.

The side faces of the tapered inner end portion 5 2 have a stii texture to enable the tampon to be readily inserted in position. The end face 6 of the tapered end portion 2 is of greater diameter than the diameter of the adjacent end of the body portion and is soft and highly absorbent. 10

The outer enlarged terminal portion or head 3 is composed entirely of the soft absorbent spun cotton and it constitutes a tight closure portion and eifectually eliminates'any danger of leakage. The softness of the enlarged portion or head elim- 15 inatesv any danger of irritation and the enlarged portion or head besides forming a head or plug closure portion insures the retention of the tampon in proper position to accomplish its function. The absorbent cotton is doubled in the-formation 20 of the head and thisdoubling of the material forms an approximately centrally arranged opening 1. Y

The tampon is provided with a silk string 8 which is doubled to form a loop 9. The loop S 25 is.passed through the opening 'I and encireles the doubled portion of the material at the outer portion of the head 3. The two strands formed by doubling the string are passed through the loop 9 to secure the string to the head of the tampon and they extend beyond the tampon a suicient distance to provide exterior means forthe ready removal of the tampon. The string may, of course, be of any other desired material.

The completely deodnzed antisepticized tam- 35 pon of absorbent spun cotton is entirely safe and reliable owing to its particular construction as the more or less iluly head insures the retention of the device and the complete elimination of any danger of leakage. 4o In practice, the tampon will be cellophane wrapped in order to insure its sanitary condition until used.

What is claimed is:

A catamenial tampon comprising a substantial- 45 ly cylindrical body portion of highly absorbent cotton for absorbing the catamenial ilow and having an enlarged outer end poltion forming a terminal head, said head being composed of soft cotum adapted to seat against the interior of the 5 vagina and thereby forming a closure portion to prevent leakage and adapted to insure retention of the tampon, said cylindrical body being provided at its inner end with a tapered trunco-conical portion having a soft absorbent end face, and a string attached to said enlarged terminal head :for withdrawal of the tampon.
