Description

Nov. 3, 1936. c. MATEN ET AL v 5 CIGARETTE CASE Filed Nov. 8, 1935 INVENTORS I COERT MATEN y STEPHEN MATEN 3 2 TTORNEW Patented Nov. 3, 1936 CIGARETTE CASE Coert Maten and Stephen Maten, a
Detroit, Mich.
Application November 8, 1935, Serial No. 48,801
'1 Claims. (01.229-16) This invention relates to containers and particularly cigarette cases.
An object of the invention is to form a cigarette case or like container from a single blank-of sheet material, by extending tongues from the lateral and bottom edges of a rectangular portion of the blank forming one of the container walls, bending the lateral tongues to form a pair of opposed side walls and further bending them to form outer members of a fourth wall, and bending the bottom tongue to form a bottom member for the container and further bending it to form an inner member of the fourth wall, a common means being employed to connect the outer members of the fourth wall to each other and to the inner member. 7
Another object is to form said lateral tongues with a pair of relatively small tongues integrally projecting from the lower edges of said opposed side walls and bent toward each other to form inner bottom members, and to interconnect such members.
Another object is to give the free edges of the first-mentioned or outer bottom member a reentrant form assuring them a clearancevfrom the walls or contents of a pocket wherein the 'case may be carried. A further object is to additionally form said blank with a tongue at its upper edge forming a 30 cover for the container and a flap for holding the cover closed, and to exteriorly mount a keeper strap on the fourth wall to receive said flap.
Further objects are to conceal beneath said keeper strap the connections between the inner and outer members of the fourth wall and to uti- 35 lize such connections to hold said strap in place.
These and various other objects the invention attains by the construction hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing,
wherein:
Fig. 1 is a view of the blank from which the described cigarette case may be formed.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the case with 'its cover in raised position.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the case showing the cover engaging its keeper.
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the case taken,
upon the line 4-8 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the case.
50 portion of the case taken on the line 6-6 Fig. 4. a
In these views the reference character l designates a rectangular center portion of a blank m formed of leather or other suitable flexible sheet Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of the bottom material and integrally provided with a pair of tongues projecting oppositely, laterally from said center portion and also with upwardly and downwardly projecting tongues. The lateral tongues are bent at their junctures 2 with the wall I to form a pair of opposed side walls 3 and are fur- "ther bent at 4 to form a pair of members projecting toward each other and abutting as indicated at 6 to form outer members of theiourthwall of the case.
The lower tongue is bent at l to form an outer bottom member 8 of the case and is again bent at 9 to extend snugly upward between the side walls 3 and form an inner member 10 of said fourth wall. The walls 3 at their lower edges are integrally formed with a pair of relatively small tongues ll bent to extend toward each other to form inner bottom members abutting at 12, centrally above the outer bottom member 8. A pair of staples or other suitable fastenings l3 interconnect the abutting ends of the tongues ll, as
best appears in Figs. 4 and 6, ,being concealed by the member 8. Preferably the latter member has its opposite free edges M of a reentrant form that will assure such edges against catching on the walls or contents of any pocket in which the case may be carried.
Extending exteriorly across the fourth wall of the case is a keeper strap I5 having its end portions passed through suitable slits in the members 5 and bent toward each other between such members and the member iii. A plurality of staples it serve to connect the inner and outer members of the fourth wall to each other and to the end portions of said strap; and at least one of said staples serves also to interconnect the members 5 and to also interconnect the strap ends.
The upper tongue is adapted to be bent at H to form a cover panel ill for the case and to be entirely concealed beneath the exterior portion of such strap. It is also a feature that the fasteners l3 interconnecting the complementary inner members ll of the container bottom are entirely concealed by the outer bottom member 8.
Another important feature of the construction is utilization of the members i I to close the gaps which might otherwise occur between the member 8 and the walls 3 of the case.
Thus use of inner and outer members tp the keeper-mounting wall and the bottom of the case adds materially to its strength, and the fact that all four walls and the top and bottom of the case are formed from a single blank simplifies manufacture and reduces its cost.
The invention is presented as including all such modifications and changes as come within the scope of the following claims.
