UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VANITY CASE AND THE LIKE Paul Gutenstein, Beechnrst, Long Island, N. Y. Application December 21, 1935, Serlal'No. 55,552
1 Claim. (Cl. 132-19) This invention relates to cases adapted to hold face powder, rouge, lipstick, and other articles of personal use. The invention is particularly adaptable to hold and make available, a number of articles of personal use, which articles have a relation when applied or put to use by the user. Thus in the specific embodiment shown in the drawing, the case is intended to hold rouge, face powder and lipstick, all articles which are ordinarily used together, and likewise, cases embodying this invention may be utilized for holding cigarettes and a cigarette lighter, two articles which likewise are used together.
The advantages arising from this invention will appear from the following description.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a plan view of the case closed; Fig. 2 is a side view; Fig. 3 is a front view; Fig. 4 is a cross section on line ll of Fig. 1, with the cover open; Fig. 5 is a front view of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a plan view similar to Fig. 1, with the cover open; Fig. 7 is a cross section on line 1--'I of Fig. 6, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the lock and holder removed from the case.
The case comprises a container I, and a cover 2, united by a hinge 3. A spring 4 is positioned in the hinge and tends to throw the cover I to.the open position and to retain it in open position, as shown in Figs. 4-7. The container I is provided with a substantially centrally located housing 5, which housing runs from the back end of the container I in a horizontal direction, to and through the forward wall of the container. The
housing is in the form of a channel, open at the forward end. The housing 5 cooperates with a unit'l, which unit has a double function, viz., it carries, as illustrated in the drawing, a lipstick, and in addition, provides a lock for the container I and the cover 2. The unit I comprises a channel member 8 made of metal-stock material and having therein a slider 9 in which the lipstick IB is secured. The slider may be moved forward and backward by pressure on the pin II attached to the slider. The unit 1 is also provided with a locking member I2, which locking member consists of an upright plate I3 secured to the end of the unit I, and a latching member II, which preferably is made continuous with the plate I3 but bent forwardly in relation thereto,
to provide an opening I5. The housing 5 and the unit I are of such relative shape and dimension so that the unit I may be slid into the housing 5 and snugly fit therein, and the distance from the top surface of the housing 5 to the lower edge of the latch I4 is such as to accommodate the thickness of the cover 2 at the forward edge thereof somewhat snugly. A slot 6 is provided in the housing 5 to accommodate the pin I I. The unit I is entirely separable from the case, and is removably associated therewith, as shown in the drawing. When the cover 2 is closed down upon the container l, the unit I is slid into the housing 5 and the forward edge of the cover is thereby slid beneath the latch I4. Inasmuch as the cover tends to spring open under the influence of the spring 4, the pressure of the spring tends 10 to hold the cover against the underside of the latch I4 and keep the unit I inplace by reason of the exerted friction.
The case, when used as a vanity case, is provided withcompartments I6 and II, in which 15 face powder and rouge may be kept, and these compartments are provided with covers I8 and I9, hinged at 20 and 2|. In the specific illustration shown in the drawing, the case is preferably in the configuration of a half disc, provided with 20 a straight back 22 and the curved edge 23. The plate I3 and the latch II are preferably decorated either by stamping, or stone inserts, to provide a decorative edge. The outer face of the plate I3 is preferably made flat in order that the unit I 25 may stand upright, and said plate and latch l4 provide a convenient means for grasping the unit for manipulation.
It is evident from the drawing that access to the interior of the case may be had, by pulling on 30 the latch end of the unit I, sliding the unit from within the housing 5, and the latch from over the cover 2. The cover being spring-pressed, will fly to open position, as shown in Fig. 4, and when the unit I is entirely withdrawn, the lipstick may 35 be projected forwardly and utilized, or, if access to the lipstick, is not desired, clearness of the latch ll from over thecover 2, permits access to the rouge or face powder. The cover 2 is preferably provided with a mirror 24 and the case, 40 when in open position, is inclined slightly backwardly from the vertical, as shown in Fig. 4, and held in that position by engagement of the rear edge thereof with the top edge of the back 22.
The invention has been described as related to 5 a vanity case, but is equally adaptable for containing cigarettes and a lighter. When the inventionis utilized as a cigarette case, it is preferably made of square configuration, and the unit I, instead of comprising a lipstick, comprises 50 a cigarette lighter, which may be of any suitable type, for instance, of the flameless type widely sold in the market at the present time. The housing 9 is specially adapted for this type of cigarette lighter in that it is completely closed 55 at the inner end thereof by the walls 2!, shown in Fig. 4, whereby excess oi! air is avoided.
I claim:
A vanity case comprising a-substantially flat, hollow container, a cover, said container and cover being hinged together, said cover being adapted to carry a mirror on the inside thereof, said cover and container having a straight back portion and curved sides, spring means to urge said cover to substantially upright position, a horizontally disposed housing substantially centrally oi the container and extending from the rear wall of the container, forwardly through the curved sides, providing a lateral space in the container, a compartment on each side of the con-- tainer, a locking member-having a unitary latch and lipstick holder, said lipstick holder being adapted to hold a lipstick, said lipstick holder being insertable in said centrally disposed housing through an opening located in the curved sides of said container, said locking member comprising a hook-like latch overlying said cover when the lipstick is inserted within said lipstick holder to hold the cover in closed position against pressure of said spring, said locking member and said lipstick holder being entirely removable from said casing by sliding motion to expose said lipstick and simultaneously release said cover to permit the same to spring open. and provide access to said compartments.
