Description

H. KOUSIN Dec. 1, 1936.
WATCHCASE Filed Dec. 50, 1935 IINVENTOR BY gum WJM ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 1, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE WATCHCASE Application December 30, 1935, Serial No. 56,651
4 Claims.
My invention relates to watch cases and has particular reference to cases adapted to enclose watch movements.
The object of my invention is to provide a watch case having inner and outer portions, the inner portion being in the form of a shell adapted to fit the outside ,edge of a watch movement, the outer portion being in the shape of an ornamental ring fitted on the outer front edge of the inner portion.
Another object of my invention is to provide a watch case of the type above described, having the inner and outer portions made of metals of difierent color: one, for instance, made of white gold, the other yellow, or one yellow, the other green, thereby producing a pleasing color effect.
Another object of my invention is to provide a watch case having an inner portion with an 20 inwardly extending flange having a groove on the inner edge for a crystal, and an outer portion in the form of a ring with engraved or otherwise formed ornamental design.
Another object of my invention is to provide a watch case formed or" two portions, the inner portion being of a standardized form and shape and adapted to enclose a watch movement, and having a recessed portion adapted to hold an outer ornamental portion. The two portions thereby permit a cheap mass production of relatively simple standardized inner cases, combined with a variety of ornamentation by mounting thereon specially decorated relatively narrow rings.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a watch case made of white metal and having settings for precious stones, with an outer ornamental ring made of yellow or green gold or artificially colored, for instance, by enameling.
My invention is more fully described in the accompanying specification and drawing in which- Fig. l is a sectional view of my watch case, Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, Fig. 3 is a view of a modified case, Fig. 4 is a view of another modification, and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of a case.
My watch case consists of an inner shell 1 adapted to be fitted over a watch movement 2 (shown with dotted lines). The shell is preferably made by stamping it out of sheet metal and it has an inwardly extending flange 3 with a groove 4 for a crystal 5. The outer front edge of the shell has a recess 6 tapering inwardly to a shoulder 1. An outer ring 8 is fitted in the recess by its outwardly tapering portion 8. The tapering portions are arranged so that the ring can be frictionally snapped in its place in the recess 6. The ring can be soldered in its place if desired.
The face of the ring 8 is provided with an ornamental engraving H] or is otherwise ornamentally finished.
The inner shell, being of a simple and standardized design, can be manufactured in quantities by stamping out of a sheet metal, preferably white gold, platinum or silver. The ornamental ring 8 is preferably made of a yellow or green gold so as to produce a pleasing blend of different colors of metal. The ring 8 can be made of different shapes or ornamentation, also relatively cheaply, so that with my construction of the watch case it can be easily furnished in a variety of designs at a relatively low cost. A standard shell I can be fitted with various rings 8 to match the design of an outer watch case (not shown) into which the case I is fitted, or bracelet into which the watch is mounted.
A modified design is shown in Fig. 3. Here a case i is of an oval shape and has settings I l for diamonds l2 or other precious stones. The case is made of a white metal as is required for the diamond settings, and it is eiiectively decorated by a ring 8 of yellow gold.
Another modification is shown in Fig. 4. Here an inner shell l5 is of a rectangular shape and is provided with an outer ring l3 with longitudinal ridges Hi.
The outside diameter of the ring 8 is preferably made the same as the diameter of the shell I in order to facilitate the mounting of the case into an outer holder (not shown).
It is understood, of course, that my invention may be further modified without departing from its spirit and within the scope of the annexed claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a watch case, the combination of an inner member adapted to be fitted on the outer edge of a watch movement and having an inwardly extending flange in front of the movement, said flange being provided with a groove for a crystal, the outer front edge of the inner member having a recess and a shoulder, and an outer member fitting by its inner edge into said recess and being ornamentally finished on its front surface.
2. In a watch case, the combination of an inner member adapted to enclose a watch movement and having an inwardly extending flange in front of said movement for a crystal, the outer front edge of the inner member having a recess and a. shoulder, and an outer member fitted by its inner edge into said recess, its outer edge substantially registering with the outer edge of said inner member.
3. In a watch case, the combination of an inner member adapted to enclose a watch movement and having an inwardly extending flange for a crystal, the outer front edge of said member having a recess and a shoulder, and an outer member removably fitted by its inner edge into said recess and being adapted to be retained in its place by friction.
4. In a watch case, the combination of an annular shell adapted to enclose the edge of a watch movement and having a flange extending over the front edge of said movement, said flange having a groove for a crystal, the outer peripheral portion of said shell having an inwardly tapering recess, and an outer annular member outwardly tapering on its inner edge, said outer member being tightly snapped into said recess,
the front portion of the outer member being 10 ornamentally finished.
