Description

S. M. STRAUS Jan. 5, 1937.
GLOVEy Filed Feb. 19, 1934 mvENToR Wdzr A'rroRNEYS Patented Jan. 5, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
My invention relates to a new and improved glove and a new and improved method of making the same.
One of the objects' of my invention is to pro vide a gloove having an extensible wrist portion.
Another object of my invention is to provide a glove whose wrist portion is fluted and extensible.
Another object of my invention is to provide a glove having an extensible wrist portion, by sewing elastic thread or threads to the exterior of the glove, in order to provide a suitable ornamental appearance and to eliminate the use of elastic inserts so that the interior of the glove does not have any inwardly projecting portions.
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment thereof, it being understood that the above statements of the object of my invention is intended to generally explain the same without limiting it in any manner.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the improved glove.
Fig. 2 is a detail plan view showing how the wrist portion of the glove is extended.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view which illustrates the elastic thread which is used, this View being Very much enlarged.
It has heretofore been proposed to make the wrist portion of a glove elastic and extensible, by providing elastic tapes or the like which were located at the interior of the glove or which were located in pockets which were provided in the glove. Such constructions were undesirable because they spoiled the ornamental appearance of the glove and they added to' the thickness or bulk of the glove at the wrist portion.
The improved construction is applied to a glove of any suitable material such as leather or the like.
In the preferred embodiment, I provide two pairs of elastic threads I2, the threads of each pair being spaced from each other and said pairs being also substantially spaced from each other. The distance between the pairs of threads exceeds the distance between the threads of each pa1r.
The elastic threads I2 are made of any suitable elastic material and I prefer to use the well known Lastex material.
As diagrammatically shown in Fig. 4, said Lastex thread has a core I2a made of rubber or the like, which is covered by a helical winding (Cl. .2d-162) ci any suitable yarn, such as silk, cotton or the These "Lastex threads can be applied by a suitable sewing machine. 'Ihe Lastex threads are sewed around the wrist portion of the glove `5 and up to the slit in said wrist portion, while said Lastex threads are maintained under tension. When the tension is released, said threads contact so as to form flutes I3.
If the glove does not have a Wrist slit at its inner side, said Lastex threads I2 may be sewed either entirely around the wrist portion of the glove, or at any desired part or parts thereof.
Fig. 2 illustrates how the wrist portion of the glove can be transversely stretched until the flutes I3 have disappeared.
The stretch of the wrist portion can be from one-third to one-half of its cross-sectional dimension, when the wrist portion is in its position of maximum contraction. This provides for sucient stretch to enable the hand of the user to be readily inserted and the wrist, portion of the glove then has a snug t.
The elastic threads l2 are wholly separated from each other. That is, they are not connected by cross threads or the like so that the material of the glove can be freely puckered or uted, intermediate each said pair of threads I2.
As shown in detail in Fig. 2, the elastic stitch which is produced by the threads I2, comprises a series of interlocking loops L, said loops being wedge-shaped.
At the inner surface of the glove, the threads I2 are substantially iiush with said inner surface, so that the bulk of the glove at its inner surface 35 is not increased to any objectionable extent. At the outer surface of the glove, the loops I2 project substantially and they can be made of a color which contrasts with the color of the material of the glove, in order to provide an ornamental effect.
A glove of this type can be very readily and cheaply constructed and it is as comfortable as the ordinary glove, while giving the desired stretch and elasticity at the wrist portion. The rows of elastic stitches are preferably perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the glove, but any suitable angle may be utilized.
The elastic threads can be applied to the trank 50 or glove blank while it is in the at condition, and the sewing of the glove blank can then be completed.
While I have shown four rows of elastic stitches,
I can utilize any desired number of such rows, 55
either one or more, and I do not wish to exclude from the scope of the invention, the use of rows of parallel stitches, Which may be transversely connected by transverse stitch members.
Likewise I do not wish to exclude from the scope of the invention, the use of elastic stitches which may project slightly from the interior surface of the glove although I prefer to use stitches which project much more from the exterior sur- 10 face of the glove, than from its interior surface.
Referring to Fig. 1, the distance between the top row of stitches l2 and the bottom row of stitches l2 should be about one-half the total length of the Wrist portion, and the top row of 15 stitches l2 may be directly adjacent the wristjoint portion of the glove.
The material of the glove `may be specified as being fluted or normally `fluted, adjacent the elastic stitches, as this is the normal condition which is illustrated in Fig. 1.
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but itis clear that numerous changes and omissions can be made without departing from its spirit.
1. A glove having a Wrist portion, said wrist portion having transverse looped stitches made of elastic thread and which engage the material of said Wrist portion, the material of said wrist portion being held normally iiuted by said stitches, said stitches projecting more from the outside surface of the glove than from the inner surface of the glove.
2. A glove having spaced rows of elastic looped stitches which engage the material thereof, the front row of elastic stitches being substantially adjacent the Wrist-joint portion of the glove, the material of the glove being held normally fluted by said stitches, said stitches projecting more from the exterior surface of the glove than from its interior surface.
3. A glove having a wrist portion, said Wrist portion having connected looped stitches made of elastic thread and connected by the loops of said stitches to the material of said wrist portion, the
material of said wrist portion being held normally fiuted by said stitches.
