Description

Jan. 12, 1937 HIM E. D. HIRSCH TELEPHONE STAND Filed Oct. 28, 1955 Patented Jan. 12, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in telephone stands and the object of the invention is to provide an efiicient portable stand suitably equipped for retaining a telephone subscriber's set thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a portable telephone stand which will in addition to the telephone subscribers set accommodate other articles such as notepads and the like for convenient use while telephoning.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a portable telephone stand which will at the same time provide an attractive and useful cigarette holder and ash tray.
The present application includes improvements for the stand disclosed in my co-pending application S. N. 30,921 filed July 11, 1935.
The invention together with its' objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of one form of portable telephone stand.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view illustrating a door mounting forming part of the invention.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the stand.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of a slightly modified form of stand.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, it will be seen that the stand comprises a suitable and preferably ornamental base 5 from which rises a post of standard 8. Provided on the upper end of the standard 6 is a head or table top I which accommodates the telephone subscribers set as shown in Figure 1.
For releasably retaining the set on the head or table top 1, which set is illustrated by broken lines in the drawing and indicated generally by the reference numeral 8 there are provided oppositely disposed jaws 9 suitably shaped to engage over the base of the telephone set as shown.
Each of the jaws 9 which may be formed of any suitable material is provided with a shank ID in the form of a screw having-an end threaded into the body of the jaw and a head equipped end accommodated within a socket or recess provided in the head or table top I as shown in Figure 2. The shank I extends through a suitable opening) I2 also provided in said head or table top 1 and which opening is of materially greater diameter than the diameter of the shank so as to permit free movement of the shank in a manner to allow the jaw 9 to swing to either the positions suggested in Figure 2.
Disposed on the head equipped end of the shank i0 is a spring I3 interposed between washers l4 and I5, washer l4 bearing against the top of the socket or recess H and washer l bearing against the head of the shank as shown. Thus it will be seen that spring l3 tends to normally urge the jaw in a clamping position which is the full line position shown in' the drawing. However to remove the telephone set 8 all that is necessary is to pull upwardly on the set causing the jaws 9 to swing to the dotted line position shown in Figure 2 whereupon the base of the set may be easily disengaged from the jaws for efiecting a complete removal of the set from the table top or head I.
The form of the invention shown in Figure 4 wherein the stand is indicated generally by the reference numeral I5 is somewhat similar to the form of the invention just described. However in the second form of the invention the jaws 9a may be mounted either in a manner corresponding to the mounting of the jaws 9 or may be fixed to the table top or head Ia and are located preferably adjacent opposite corners of the head as shown. By so placing the jaws 9a room on. the table top la is provided so as to accommodate other articles such as for example an ash tray l6 which may be positively secured to the table top I or may be free of any positive connection therewith. Also the top I accommodates a suitable notepad I1 and of course any suitable means may be provided for detachably securing the pad in position on the head la. Further said head is also provided with a groove or the like I8 to accommodate a pencil or other writing instrument as clearly shown.
From the above it will be seen that I have provided a portable telephone stand which will not only serve its intended function as a telephone stand but also serve as a convenient ash tray or cigarette stand; and which also will otherwise serve as an attractive as well as a useful article of furniture.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A stand for a telephone subscribers set, said stand comprising a base, a standard rising from the base, a head on the upper end of the standard upon which a telephone subscribers set is adapted to rest, jaw members on.- said head engageable with the base of the subscribers set, means connecting the jaws to the head for swivel and pivotal movement of the jaws and spring means yieldably urging the jaws in position for engaging the base of the subscribers set.
2. A stand for a telephone subscribers set comprising a base, a standard rising from said base, and a top on the standard for accommodating the telephone subscribers set, and jaws mounted on said top engageable with the base of the telephone set for rigidly retaining the latter on 0 said top, means connecting the jaws to the top ERIC D.
