This invention is especially for boxes for cigarettes in the small quantities in which they are customarily sold at retail. The object is to provide a box with two compartments of convenient size for carrying in the pocket into which two open-end containers for the cigarettes may be inserted. The box is formed from a single piece of box-board suitably cut and folded with a weakened line as by perforations so that when the contents has been removed from the upper compartment the box can be separated into two parts and the emptied compartment discarded and the lower compartment retained and provided with a suitable clasp flap or closure, thereby reducing the size of the box to be carried.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings which forms a part of this description Figure l is a perspective of the box closed as seen from one side, the clasp flap being disengaged.
Fig. 2 is a similar view as seen from the other side.
Fig. 3 is a view of the blank from which the box is formed.
Fig. 4 is a perspective of the box fully opened.
Fig. 5 is a perspective of the box reduced to one compartment.
Fig. 6 is a perspective of one of the containers.
The box-board blank from which the box is formed is cut so that there will be a main strip with an upper back section IQ for the upper compartment, a lower back section II for the lower compartment, a connecting web 12, and a clasp flap I3. At one side of the main strip opposite the upper back section is an upper side wing l4, and opposite the lower back section is a lower side wing IS. The side wings form the fronts of the two compartments and are cut down at their upper edges so that the contents will be more readily accessible. As it is desirable that the compartments should be fully rectangular there are also edge sections it and I 1 between the back sections and the side wings, edge sections l8 and 19 at the sides of the back sections, and glued to these are edge sections 20 and 2! at the sides of the wing sections when the wing sections are folded over to form the compartments. There are open-end containers which slide into the compartments, each consisting of a front section 22 which is cut down at its upper edge, a back section 23, side sections 24 and a bottom section 25. The clasp flap can be tucked between the lower back section and the back section of the container in the lower compartment. The box may be used to hold the cigarettes without the containers, in which case it would be slightly smaller than when the compartments are to enclose the containers which in turn hold the cigarettes. The blank is creased along the lines as indicated by dashed lines between the sections to form fold lines.
An additional fold line 26 is provided at the middle of the connecting web and there is a weakened line 2! along which part of the fibers of the box-board are cut as by a line of perforations. This enables the ready tearing apart of the two compartments and the discarding of the upper compartment when it has been emptied, and the lower connecting web can be folded over, bending also at the fold line 26 to form the tuck section to close the lower compartment and thus serve as a clasp flap that can be tucked between the front section formed from the lower side wing and the front section of the container in the lower compartment. The front section of the container is not cut down as much as the front of the compartment so that the edges will not be even with each other and the tucking in of the flap will be facilitated.
I claim,
1. A box made from a single blank folded to A partment having a. connecting web with a middle fold line the width of the web being equal to the combined thickness of the compartments, the blank consisting of the back sections of the compartments the connecting web and the side wings folded over to form the front sections of the compartments, and having a weakened line along the back section of the upper compartment which is spaced from the middle fold line by the amount required for a clasp flap to permit the tearing apart and discarding of the upper compartment and the use of the lower compartment with the web and the portion below the tear-apart line serving as a clasp flap for the lower compartment.
2. A box made from a single blank folded to form two narrow compartments one above the other with open upper ends when the box is fully opened, the lower end of the upper compartment and the upper end of the lower compartment having a connecting web with a middle fold line the width of the web being equal to the combined thickness of the compartments, the blank consisting of the back sections of the compartments the connecting web and the side wings folded over to form the front sections of the compartments, and having a weakened line along the back section of the upper compartment which is spaced from the middle fold line by the amount required for a clasp flap, and an open end container for each of the compartments so that a tuck pocket for the clasp flap is formed between the back section of the lower compartment and the container in the compartment, the weakened line serving to permit the tearing apart and discarding of the upper compartment and the use of the lower compartment with the web and the portion below the tearapart line serving as a clasp flap for the lower compartment and the portion between the tearapart line and the middle fold line engaging a tuck pocket between the front section of the lower compartment and the front section of the container therein.
