This invention relates to novelty packages, particularly for use in assisting in the sale of Easter grass, candy, eggs and similar novelties of merchandise.

The objects of the invention are to provide a novel package, which is inexpensive, simple and attractive; to form such package of a main body portion formed of one piece of material and provide said body with a handle portion slidably engaged therewith; to provide said body portion with interlocking means for maintaining the sides thereof in position, said means also serving to prevent the ingress of dust or dirt into the body; and to provide novel means for connecting said handle to the body, so the package may be shipped in a fiat condition, yet providing for extending said handle to afford convenient means for carrying the package.

Other objects and features of the invention will become more apparent as the description progresses, said description being based on the preferred form of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying drawing:-

Referring to the drawing in greater detail, the body generally designated at 6, in the present instance, is shown as hexagonal in shape and comprises a bottom I, lateral walls 8, and somewhat shorter end walls 9. The body preferably being formed of a stiff material, such as cardboard or the like, the blank from which it is formed, is preferably provided with score marks I at the junctures of the bottom 1 with the side walls to facilitate bending said walls at right-angles to said bottom and thereby forming a continuous peripheral wall.

In the present instance, it is preferred to provide each of the walls 8 and 9, with an additional flange portion I I, adapted to be bent inwardly for the general purpose of stiffening the body structure.

Each of the lateral walls 8 is provided with an extension I2, one of said extensions I2 being provided with an upper hook portion I3, and the complementary member I2, being provided with a similar lower hook portion I4. The hook portions I3, I4, are adapted to be interengaged as shown in Fig. 1, so that the extensions I2 overlie the end walls 9 and act to maintain them in an upright position.

The joint between adjacent walls 8 is formed by a hook-shaped extension I5, formed on one of the members 8, and a slit l6, enterable by said hook portion I as shown in Fig. 4, said slit being provided on the other wall 8 and at the edge thereof adjacent to the hook portion I5.

It will be noted that the hook portion I5 is preferably positioned at the upper end of the wall, as is the slit IS. The neck portion I1 thereof overlies the outer surface of the complementary wall 8, and the hook portion I5 is disposed against the inner wall. This closes that portion of the joint against ingress of dust or dlrt into the body. As further insurance, a flap I8 is provided on the wall 8 which has the hook l5, and

is adapted to lie against the inner face of the cooperating wall 8. This completes the effective sealing of the joint between the walls 8 of the body.

From the foregoing, it can be readily seen that a simple one piece body has been formed, which is substantially non-distortable and of attractive shape and appearance.

As herein contemplated, the body is preferably provided with a handle such as generally designated I9, comprising a transverse gripping portion 20, and similar end portions 2|. The handle I9 is preferably scored as at 22, so that said end portions may be bent at an angle to the gripping portion and said end portions are each scored as at 23, to form similar portions adapted.

to flatly rest against portions of the wall 8 adjacent to the joint between them. The handle is perforated at 2311 to act as a terminal for the score mark 23.

Each end 2| is preferably provided with earshaped hook portions 24, each being adapted for insertion through a slit 25, provided in each wall 8, the hooks 24 being adapted to rest against the inner faces of said walls 8.

The slits 25 are preferably of substantial length as shown, affording considerable vertical movement of the handle ends in relation to the body. When the ends 2| are moved to the low position shown in Fig. 2, it will be noted that the gripping portion 20 of the handle assumes a flat position immediately across the top of the body,

and as seen in Fig. 1, when said portions 2| are slid to the high position, the gripping portion 20 is sufiiciently spaced from the contents of the 5 body to permit ready grasping.

From the foregoing, it can be seen that a desirable novelty package has been provided in its preferred form of embodiment. It is apparent that the body may be difierently shaped and that immaterial changes may be made by skilled per sons, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.

What is claimed is:

1. A basketlike receptacle of the collapsible type, comprising a one piece blank of sheet material having a generally hexagonal bottom portion with upwardly folding end walls at opposite ends of the same and upwardly foldable angularly related side walls between said end walls, said side walls having extensions at the ends of the receptacle meeting over the outside-of the end walls to maintain the latter in upstanding relation, interlocking elements on said extensions for holding the same in said meeting relation and interlocking elements on the adjoining ends of said angularly related side walls for maintaining these ends of said side walls 'in upstanding angularly disposed relation.

2. The structure of claim 1, with a handle having horizontally extended end portions angled about said connected angularly related ends of the side walls and interlocking means on said angled side walls and said angled extended ends of said handle.

3. The structure of claim 1, with a handle having horizontally extended end portions angled about said connected angularly related ends of the side Walls, interlocking means on said angled side walls and said angled extended ends of said 40 handle, including spaced vertical slits in said angled side walls and hook elements on said handle end members entered in said spaced vertical slits.

4. The structure of claim 1, in which the in- .ping the slotted side wall on terlocking means between the side walls includes in each instance a projecting hook element on the end of one side wall, a receiving slot in the other side wall and a joint-covering extension below the hook on said first side wall overlapthe opposite side from said hook.

5. A receptacle of the character disclosed, comprising a blank of sheet material having a bottom portion and upwardly foldable angularly related side wall portions, one side wall portion having a slit adjacent the end of the same, the other side wall portion having a hook extension at the end of the same adapted to overlap one face of and enter the slit in the slitted side wall I and a flap coextensive with and at one side of said hook extension but separated from said hook extension to overlap the opposite face of saidaslitted wall.

6. In a receptacle of the character disclosed, a blank of sheet material having a. bottom-portion and angularly related upwardly foldable side walls, means for holding said side walls in such upwardly foldable angular relation and a handle member having a laterally extended end portion overlapping the adjoining ends of said angularly related side walls and means for connecting said extended end portion of said handle with the respective side walls.

7. In a receptacle of the character disclosed, a blank ofsheet material having a bottom portion and angularly related upwardly foldable side walls, means for holding said side walls in such upwardly foldable angular relation and a handle member having a laterally extended end portion overlapping the adjoining ends of said angularly related side walls, means for connecting said extended end portion of said handle with the respective side walls, including hook elements on the ends of said extension and spaced vertical slits in the adjoining ends of said side walls for receiving said hook elements.
