Description

GARMENT Filed Sept. 21. 1955 [DIV/4,90 6644/5519.
INVENTQR.
ATTORNEYS.
Patented Aug. 31, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in garments and more particularly to men's and womens bathing trunks.
The brevity and tight fit of the present style bathing trunks when worn, exposes various lines of the wearers anatomy which to some wearers may be embarrassing. It is therefore the primary object of this invention to provide a stylish garment of the above kind which combines an outer undivided skirtwith an under crotch covering garment which when worn, conceals the buttocks and crotch of the wearer, while affording seat snugness and body freedom.
Another feature of the invention resides in a bathing or play suit having an outer skirt part and an under crotch covering part joined together by pairs of spaced front and back seams which are disposed well on the outer sides of the thighs and buttocks of a wearer when the garment is in use to prevent the under crotch covering part from revealing a pulling effect on the outer skirt part when the wearer is seated or stooping. During such action on the part of a wearer, the crotch line over the wearers buttocks lengthens and unless the joining seams follow the fiat outer surface of the thighs and buttocks, a pulling in effect will show on the outer skirt part.
Another feature of the invention resides in a bathing trunk having an outer skirt part and an 0 under crotch covering part, portions of the skirt part combining with the crotch covering part to provide leg openings, thus preventing bulkiness, reducing the amount of material used in the making of the garment to a minimum, and accordingly lessening the cost of manufacture.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a combination garment of the above kind in which the crotch covering part and skirt part are joined together in such manner that the skirt part always conceals the crotch at the front and back of a wearer, and is prevented from sliding upward regardless of how active the body may be.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which will be hereinafter fully described in the specification, pointed out in the appended claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of one embodiment of my combination garment constructed of knitted material showing the same in position upon a wearer, and looking at the rear thereof.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the garment 55 looking at the front thereof.
Figure 3 is a vertical central longitudinal sectional view.
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view.
Referring to thedrawing by reference characters the numerallll designates the combination garment in its. entirety and which is constructed of knitted material having sufficient give to facilitate the donning and removal of the same without the necessity of buttonable plackets.
The single garment broadly includes an outer undivided skirt part A and an under crotch covering part B, coacting with the part A to form leg openings C- -C adjacent the bottom of the skirt part. The top oftheskirt part is shaped to form a waist encircling band D which has loops E spaced therearound for the passage of a belt F as shown in Figure 1.
The outer skirt part A includes four sections, namely a front section II, two identical side sections I2l2, and a rear or back section l3. The front section I I has its opposite side edges joined to adjacent front edges of the side sections l2 by stitching l4, and these joined edges are disposed at the front of the garment and form seams Iii-l5. The meeting edges of these joined sections are cut and stitched so that the seams l5-I5 converge upwardly from the bottom edge of the skirt part to the waist portion D thereof. The side edges of the rear section l3 are likewise cut to converge upwardly and are stitched to adjacent rear edges of the side sections l2|2 to form upwardly converging back seams l6l6. The upwardly converging front seams I5l5 overlie the outer sides of the respective thighs of a wearer, while the upwardly converging back seams l6l6 overlie the outer sides of the respective buttocks.
Secured to the inside of the front section II is a, front crotch covering part H which includes a pair of identical sections l8--l8 having inner straight edges which are stitched together to provide a downwardly and rearwardly extending seam IS. The outer side edges of the sections I8-l8 are secured to the outer skirt part by the stitching I4. The lower outer edges of the sections l8-l8 are curved and shaped to fit the curvature of the thigh of a wearer.
Underlying the back section I3 is a rear crotch covering part 20 which includes a pair of identical sections 2I--2l similar to the sections l8l8 of the front crotch covering part IT. The straight meeting edges of the sections l8-I8 are stitched to provide a downwardly and forwardly extending seam 22. The sections I8l8 and 2l-2| meet and are secured by stitching to provide a cross seam 23. All of the seam stitching is performed while the parts are inside out, after which the stitched garment is reversed to hide the stitching from the outside, thus making only the seams visible.
To flatten the merging seams that overlie each thigh, the front center skirt section II is made narrower in width than the combined width of the underlying crotch covering sections |8-l8. The skirt front will pull the seams flat with its strong or side pull, over the lesser side stretched material of the under sections.
The crotch covering sections 11 and 20 extend from the inturned waist hem 24 to a point just.
short of the bottom hem 25 thereof, the bottom edges of the sections I8I8 and 2l-2I being hemmed as at 26 as best seen in Figure 2 of the drawing.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the side sections |2'|2 of the skirt part A coact with the crotch covering sections l8--l8 and 2I-2l to provide the under crotch covering part B, the crotch covering -part being normally concealed from view by the lower part of the undivided skirt part A. When the garment is in position upon a wearer, the samefits snugly about the legs and crotch while the skirt portion will always be held down in crotch concealing position. This construction eliminates the uncomfortable riding up of the skirt part relativeto the crotch covering part.
In Figure 4 of the drawing, I have illustrated a line XX drawn transversely through one of the leg openings C to more clearly show the relative position of the front and rear seams l5 and I6 respectively, with respect to the thigh of a wearer. Assuming that the line XX indicates substantially the fore and aft center of the wearers thigh, the seams l5 and I6 are disposed on a plane outwardly thereof, so as to overlie the outer curves of the wearers thighs and buttocks.
Havingvthus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:-
A bathing garment adapted to extend from the waist line to a point below the crotch and comprising a tight fitting outer skirt part composed of opposed relatively narrow side pieces and relatively wide intermediate front and back pieces and an inner member having front and back body covering parts extending from adjacent the waist line and including a crotch, said front and back parts of the inner member being continuous between their side edges and coextensive in width with the front and back intermediate pieces of the skirt, the side edges of the front and back pieces of the skirt being secured to the adjacent side edges of the inner member and to the adjacent side edges of the side pieces of the skirtby straight vertical seams which overlie the thighs and buttocks of the wearer and which seams extend substantially throughout the length of the garment, the lower edges of said crotch and the lower edges of said side pieces cooperating to tightly encircle the legs of the wearer to prevent upward movement of the skirt.
