IMPROVEMENT IN HATS, SHADES, 80C.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,788, dated November 12, 1878; application filed June 1, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAEL AFFEL, of Ripley, in the county of Brown and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Hat, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved hat; Fig. 2, a top view of a portion of the same on enlarged scale, and Fig. 3 a detail top view of one of the pieces or sections of the same.

This invention relates to an improved construction of hats, baskets, card-racks, and similar articles, that are made of thin pieces of wood or other material; and the invention consists of a hat, basket, or other article that is made of a number of radial pieces, splits, or sections of wood or other material which are notched at both sides, so as to interlock, and are finally connected by stitching or lacmg.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a hat, basket, lamp-shade, or other article, which is made of a number of splits, pieces, or sections, 13, that are cut out of thin wood, paper, or other material, and notched at both sides at two or more points, as shown in Fig. 3, and which are finally connected by interlocking them at the notches, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.

The splits or sections maybe printed on the upper side with suitable ornaments, or otherwise embellished, so as to improve the appearance of the articles made therefrom.

The pieces are finally connected at the notches by means of stitching or lacing O, that extends alternately around the notched portions.

The stitching or lacing may be applied at two or more points, according to the article made from the notched pieces.

The article is finally lined in a suitable manner at the inside, and thereby, from the notched splits or sections a large variety of articles obtained, such as those before mentioned, as well as picture-frames, window-blinds, transparencies, and other devices.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A hat, basket, shade, or other article consisting of notched interlocking pieces or splits that are stitched or laced together at the notched points, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A hat, basket, shade, or other article constructed of sectional pieces or splits that are notched at two or more points on both sides, so as to interlock with the adjoining splits, they being connected by a stitching or lacing passing around the notched portions, substantially as set forth.
