An objectis'fto provide a simple, practical, and inexpensive article of the character described.

5 Another object is to provide a diaper adapted to remain dry on the outside for a long period of time after the inside may have become wet.

Another object is `to provide a diaper adapted to prevent chilling of the wearer.

Referring more particularly to the drawing and particularly to Fig. l, I show a diaper having the general outline indicated, consisting essentially of sheet material having a front body portion I5 and back portion I6. The diaper has an inside member I1 preferably having the form indicated and an outside member I8 substantially identical in with cut-out portions 20 adapted to accommodate f the legs of an infant utilizing the invention, and the edge portions of' members I1 and I8 are secured together as by inside stitching, which I 55 .continues entirely around the edges of the said adapted to extend partway into the space formed (Cl. 12s-284) members with the exception of a portion at the m,top of the back between the letters A A in Fig. 1 and also at the base of each recess 20 between the points marked B B, respectively, in Fig. 3.

The construction as defined so far results in a 5 flat and somewhat hollow article, wherein additional sheet material about to be described may`V be inserted. In Fig. 4 I show an extra layer 2| preferably of flannel or similar material having the outline indicated which is preferably smaller l0 in area than that of the members I1 and I8. The layer 2I is provided with cut-out portions 22 similar in shape to cut-outs 2D, and the layer 2I is secured as by stitching 23 to the inside of the inside member Il as will be clear from Figs. l and l5 3, the cut-out portions 22 being found to register with cut-outs 20, layer 2| serving essentially as an auxiliary member to provide the inner member I1 with a double thickness and substantially doubling the moisture absorption capacity of the same.

In Fig. 5 I have shown a moisture resisting layer of sheet material which may be of rubber or a rubberized fabric formed substantially as shown and having'a generally similar shape to 254 members Il and I8, and adapted to be inserted between the outside member I8 and member 2|, which as hereinbefore stated, is secured to the inner sideof inside member I'I. Sheet 24, however, has abbreviated portions ISC which are by the members I9 to insure the layer 24 remain ing 'fiat and extended at all times, and the sheet' 24 iseprovided with cut-outs 25 adapted to register substantially with cut-outs 20 and` 22 but having inside edge portions 25d of less depth than the base of cut-outs 20 and 22, the edge portions 25d being adapted to extend or protrude outside of the envelope formed by members Il, I8,"and 2I for a purpose to be presently disclosed. Sheet 24 is further provided with an extending edge portion 26 adapted to extend downwardly beyond the outer edge of members II, I8, and 2l at the upper portion of the back, the edges 25d and 26 extending outwardly from within the envelope at the places as mentioned above where the stitching of member Il to I8 was discontinued.

In Fig. 9 the diaper is shown inV place upon the body of an infant, the waistband portions I9 being brought around tothe front and secured together as by pinning, the portions 25d of the` rubber sheet 24 being shown extending out from within the envelope and adapted to lie against the leg of the infant. In a similar manner the edge 26 of sheet 24 extending outwardly -from 55 side of the sheet 24. AWhen the inside members `i8 and 2| become wet the rubber layer 36 will prevent the outside member is from-becoming wet,A the portions 25d and 28 assisting greatly to this end in case of an excessof moisture tending to run out at these points by forming a seal with the body of theinfant at 'these -plsceshus retarding and resisting the moisture and preventing it from being absorbedby the outside member i8, a time interval occurring therein sumcient for the inside members il and 2i to absorb this moisture.

It has been found that in use the diaper es hereinabove described, will remain dry on the outside :for `an indenite-period even after the inside portion has become neer-ly saturated, and that further, evaporation of the moisture is practically prevented by the rubber layer 2d, the effect of which is that the body of the infant will not become chilled or cold incidental to such ordinary evaporation.

While I have mustrated and describes the preferred form of construction for carrying my in= ventiony into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the a,oo7,sos

spirit oi the invention. I. therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details ot construction set iorth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modications as come within the scope of the appended claims. 'f

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A device of the character described'comprising an outer layer and inner layer, and means to prevent the outer layer from becoming moist \upon the moistening of the inner layer, said means including a moisture resisting element, and a second layer secured to said inner'layer, said layers and elements 'having registering leg cut-out portions, said moisture resisting element cut-out being of less depth than the cut-out portions of said layers.
