HM PROVEMENT lN WINDOW-SCREENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,495, dated December 3, 1878; application filed October 28, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD THOMAS BUR- RowEs, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable \Vindow-Screens; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved window-screen in position in a window. Fig. 2 is a reversed view of the screen and fastener, with a portion of the screen-frame removed, exposing to view the individual parts of the fastener; and Fig. 3 is' a cross-section thereof.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters.
This invention relates to certain improvements in adjustable window-screens, by which the screen can be raised and lowered to any desired point and there held, and also looked; and it consists in the employment, in connection with one or more springs and tran sverselysliding pins or bolts, of an'obliquelyslotted slide, whose oblique slots receive pins projecting from said bolts, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, A refers to a windowscreen, one of the side bars or pieces of which is grooved or channeled, as at a, so as to leave its side edge open. This groove or channel receives springs B B, one or more in number, and also permits of the play of the projecting end of the bolt (3, to be further referred to hereinafter. This side piece of the frame of the screen is also provided with a socket or recess, b, adapted to receive the sliding bar or slide D, with which the bolt and springs connect, as presently set forth. This bar or slide is supplied with oblique ordiagonal slots 0 c.
The springs B are each sec-tired about centrally of its'length to a sliding bar, d, having a lateral arm, 0, projecting into the end slots, 0. These springs press outwardly against the window-frame, or rather against a rib, G, by which pressure the screen may be held at any desired point, up or down, as maybe desired. Their release from contact with the windowframe will be directly set forth. The bolt 0 is, in like manner, connectedto the slide D-i. 0., by a. pin, d, projecting from the said bolt into the slot 0 of said slide.
It will be seen that the springs 13 also serve to hold the bolt 0 in a projected position, in which position the bolt enters any one of a series of perforations or notches, h h, in the rib G, and is thus caused to lock the screen or sash, which is particularly desirable when the screen or sash is down.
E is a hook-shaped arm projecting from the slide D through a slot, f, in the side piece of the screen or sash, which bar or projection E, with the slide D, to which it is connected, is held properly in position by a pin, g, passing transversely through said projection, and resting or bearing against the outside of the sash. Fastened to the same side of the sash, directly above or in a line with the arm E, is a projecting fin ger-piece or plate, h.
It will be observed that by pressing the arm or projection E toward the plate h, with one or more of the fingers resting on said plate, the springs 13 will be compressed or released from contact with the window-frame, and the bolt 0 at the same time retracted from its coincident aperture in said frame, when the sash or screen can be moved up or down to the desired point.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- 1. The combination, with a sliding obliqnely-slotted bar or slide, of one or more springs, each having a centrally-attached bar or pin connected to said slide, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the adjustable screen or sashframe A, the presser-springs B B, pins 61 01, having right-angled projections e c, and obliquely-slotted slide D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In combination with r the adjustable screen or sash frame A, the lock-bolt (l, having right-angled arm or projection d, slide D, having oblique slot 0, and operating-springs B B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
