Description

April 19, 1938. H. JEAN 2,114,634
UNDERGARMBNT Filed June 2, 1937 fnl efltor'. Henry Jean.
Patented Apr. '19, 1938 UNITED STATES UNDEBGABMENT Henry Jean, Hamilton,
to Leo J. Layden, Hamilton,
Application June 2, i In Canada Claims.
The principal objects of this. invention are to provide a neat "and comfortable fitting trunk garment which will fit snugly and form a garment presenting a suitable and omfortable sup- 5- port. 1
The principal features of the invention consist in the novel form of trunk having a snug-fitting waistband and snug-fitting leg bands with a reinforced center portion provided with a fly-closed opening arranged above a medially arranged pleat.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevational view .of my improved garment.
Figure 2 is avrear elevational view.
Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the garment and Figure 4 is an enlarged diagrammatic detail view showing the structure of the front panel.
In the construction herein shown, the rear panel i forms about half of the upper portion of the trunk-surrounding band tapering downwardly to a narrow crotch portion 2. To theconverg ing edges 3 there are secured the side portions t which are joined to the front panel which is made up of a plurality of sections. The upper section 5, which is of converging form, is formed of a double thickness of material seamed atits side edges to the mrtions t and at its top to the waistband ii.
An intermediate or fly section i formed of two doubled pieces of cloth are arranged to overlap each other in the manner particularly shown-in Figure 4 and the upper edges are secured to the bottom edge oi'the upper front section b, the doubled edges overlapping in a wide central over- A lower or crotch section 8 also formed of a doubled thickness of material, is formed with a central box-pleat 9 and the upper edge is stitched to the bottom edge of the fly section I, the boxpleat portion being preferably interposed between or abutted against the lower edge portion of the fly section- I.
The bottom edge of the'pleated section 8 is butted and stitched to the narrow edge or end of the crotch portion 2 or the back panel.
All of the seams of this garment are formed by an overcast elastic stitch which iorms a secure binding of abutting or overlapping edges of fabric.
The back panel and side portions 4 are preferably formed ofa single thickness of material, whereas the several sections of the front panel are preferably formed of doubled textile fabric.. The front panel thus has less longitudinal elasticity than has the back panel, but the wales of the Ontario, Canada, assignor Ontario, Canada Serial No. 146,029 June a, 19cc knitted fabric from which both front, side and back panels are made, all extend downwardly from the elastic waistband,.thus permitting ample lateral stretch.
A doubled fabric is stitched to the bottom edges 5 of the several panels to form elasticleg bands which fit snugly around the limbs of the wearer.
It will be appreciated that the double thickness of the upper front panel member it will form a substantially non-stretchable lengthwise'support it for the fly section i, consequently the fly will norreally be maintained closed, so also the doubled or partly-quadrupled section of the box-pleated portion of the lower portion of the front panel, will have ample room for lateral out any appreciable longitudinal stretch.
A garment constructed as described will fit snugly against the front of the body and the back panel and side sections will readily stretch und the hips, thus producing a very comfortable garm ment.
What I claim as my invention is:-
l. A mans undergarment having a center front section composed of triple panels disposed in series between the waistband and the lower crotch g5 extremity, the intermediate panel having a fly opening extending the full distance between the adjacent edges of the upper and lower panels and reinforcedat the ends byconnection therewith, the lower panel having a central vertical boa an pleat continuing downward directly from the low er extremity of the fly opening.
2. A garment as claimed in. claim 1 in which said intermediate panel comprises two separate doubled sections of knitted fabric 02 substantially at identical size and shape disposed with their doubled edges substantially parallelly overlapped and stitched at the ends to the respective adjacent edges of the upper and lower panels whereby a reinforcedhy of iour-ply is provided free of no separate binding at the edges.
3. A mans undergarment having a waistband,
a center panel secured to said waistband and formed of a double thickness of knitted fabric with the wales extending downwardly, a pair of dd doubled pieces of fabric with the wales entending downwardly secured to the bottom edge oi said front panel with the doubled edges overlapping forming a fly ope. ng,and a lower front sec tion formed of doubled knitted material with the wales extending longitudinally and having its tipper edge secured to the bottom edge at the rig opening portion.
4. A man's undergarment having a waistband,
a center panel secured to said waistband and at distention withwband and converging inwardly to a crotch formation and having the wales extending downwardly from the waistband, side panels connected to said waistband and to said back panel also having the wales extending downwardly, and a front panel connected centrally to the waistband and diagonally to theside panels and being formed of doubled material with the wales extending downwardly, the center portion having a vertically arranged fly therein and a longitudinally arranged box pleat therebelow extending to the crotch portion of the back panel.
