Wrigley, .in, Company, (Chicago, ML, a corporation of Delaware This invention relates to improvements in package wraps and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention relates especially to that type oi package wrap closed at its ends, sealed lengthwise along overlapping marginal portions and including near one end a narrow strip extending transversely around the package within the wrapper and having an end projecting beyond the seal, by means of which the wrapper may be torn in line with the strip to sever a cap-like portion from the proximate end of the package. The cap is readily removed, leaving the major portion of the wrapper intact on the package until its contents have been consumed.

A preferred package of the kind is shown in Lindsey Patent No. 2,008,361 granted July 16, 1935, which is directed more particularly to a cellophane package wrap. In that package a tab on the longitudinal overlapping margin of the wrapper projecting beyond the seal coincides with the projecting end ofthe strip, so that a narrow strip or band of the wrapper is torn from the wrapper along with the strip, thus in suring a clean severance of the cap-like portion to be removed from the end.

The package wrap of the invention is particularly designed for use in packing sticks of chewing gum, or other confection. In such packages, even after the cap-like end portion of the wrapper is removed, there is generally some fumbling required to remove the first stick of gum or confection, because the sticks are closely V packed together and it is dificult to grasp an end of the stick to be first removed.

The object of the invention is to provide a package wrap of the kind in which the strip is so disposed and secured within the package that after the strip has been manipulated to sever the cap, it will perform the additional function of removing the cap from the package and withdrawing with .it one stick of the gum or confection.

The objects and advantages of the invention .with it one stick of the chewing gum.

Referring now to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing:llil indicates the wrapper enclosing a, plurality of wrapped sticks H of chewing gum, generally five. As shown, a tab i5 projecting beyond the seal of the overlapping edges 82 coincides .with the projecting end of the tearing strip l6, which is wrapped around the package of wrapped sticks inside the wrapper. The wrapper as thus far described, may be and is preferably of cellophane, as in the aforesaid Lindsey patent, and the tearing strip l6, likewise of cellophane, is made of a color in contrast with the color of the wrapper itself, so that the location of the stripmay be I 6 is made longer than heretofore, in order to provide a part i! In addition, the cap end'of the wrapper and/or the part H of the strip'is sealed to the wrapping of the proximate stick of chewing gum or confection which, as illustrated, is one of the outermost sticks. As shown in the drawing, the strip is sealed to the marginal end of the prommate wrapped stick of chewing gum, as indicated at llb.

In wrapping the improved package wrap, the wrapper and/or the part ll of the strip it is gummed and adhered to the wrapping of the prommate outer stick. By a suitable device, the tearing strip is then turned upon itself at a right angle, as indicated at it in Figure 3, and is then wrapped around the package of sticks transversely in the usual manner, with its end- 09 pro-,

jected beyond and sealed between the overlapping longitudinal margins I2 of the wrapper. When in the process of closing the ends of the wrapper,

interfolded with and sealed between said overlapping flaps ll, II. We thus have a tearing strip connected directly or indirectly to the wrapper of one of the outermost sticks in the package and also sealed to the cap which is to be severed when operating the tearing strip.

The tearing strip is operated in the usual manner to tear out a strip of the cellophane wrapper with the unwinding movement of the tape about the package, thus completely severing the cap end 20 from the rest of the wrapper; and by a further pull, said end is removed and the proximate stick 2!, to the wrapping of which the part i'l oi the tearing strip is directly or indirectly secured, is withdrawn from the package along with the cap. I

While in describing the preferred embodiment of the invention I have shown it as applied to the type of cellophane package wrap shown and described in the aforesaid Lindsey patent, it is to be understood that it is applicable to other package wraps when of cellophane or other material.

I claim as my invention:-

1. In combination, a plurality of wrapped sticks, an outer wrapper for said sticks closed at its ends and sealed lengthwise along overlapping marginal portions, and a narrow strip extending transversely around the sticks and having one end extending without the wrapper beyond the seal of said overlapping marginal portions and having its other end sealed to one of the wrapped sticks for the removal of said stick from the wrapper.

2. In combination, a plurality of wrapped sticks, an outer wrapper for said sticks closed at its ends and sealed lengthwise along overlapping marginal portions, and a narrow strip extending transversely around the sticks and having one end extending without the wrapper beyond the seal of said overlapping marginal portions and wrapper.

4. In combination, a plurality of wrapped sticks, an outer wrapper for said sticks having interi'olded sealed ends and being sealed lengthwise along overlapping marginal portions, and a narrow strip extending transversely aroundthe sticks and having one end extending without the wrapper beyond the seal of said overlapping marginal portions and having its other end extended longitudinally of the package and sealed to one of the wrapped sticks and to the proximate inter- Iolded sealed end of the wrapper.'

5. In combination, a package of sticks assembled lengthwise, a wrapper for said package closed at its ends and sealed lengthwise along overlapping marginal portions, a narrow tearing strip extending transversely around said package and having one end extending without the wrapper beyond the seal of said overlapping marginal portions, and means securing the other end of said tearing strip to one end part of said wrapper and to one of said sticks.

6. In combination, a package of sticks assembled lengthwise, a wrapper for said package closed at its ends and sealed lengthwise along overlappingmarginal portions, a narrow tearing strip extending transversely around said package and having one end extending without the wrapper beyond the seal of said overlapping marginal portions, and means associated with the other end of said tearing strip for withdrawing by said strip one stick from said package with one end part of said wrapper.

7. In combination, a plurality of elongated elements, an outer wrapper for said elements sealed along overlapping marginal portions, and a nar-' row strip extending about the elongated elements within the wrapper and having one end extending without the wrapper beyond the seal of said overlapping marginal portions and having its other end attached to one of said elongated elements for the removal of said stick from the wrapper.

8. In combination, a plurality of elongated elements, an outer wrapper for said elements sealed along overlapping marginal portions, and a narrow strip extending transversely around the elongated elements within the wrapper and having one end extending without the wrapper beyond the seal of said overlapping marginal portions and having its other end attached to one or said elongated elements for the removal of said stick from the wrapper. v-
