11 Claims.

My invention relates to improvements in bath room equipment, and the same has for its object the provision of simple, eiiicient and inexpensive means whereby bath rooms, lavatories 5 and kitchens furnished with obsolete forms of apparatus and iittings may be conveniently and inexpensively modernized.

Further, said invention has for its object the provision of a structure in the form of a panel which may be readily secured to the wall of a bath room to conceal the rough plumbing work, and at the same time serve to supply a lavatory support, medicine cabinet, locker, shelf, and wash hamper or receptacle.

Further, said invention has for its object the provision of a casing or panel in which the receptacle for soiled wash, towels, etc. will also serve, in part, to support the lavatory in position.

Further, said invention has for its object the provision of a panel of the character specified having a projecting -base forming below the lavatory or sink a casing having an opening in its front portion, and a movable closure for said opening having a receptacle upon its 'rear side normally concealed in said base.

Further, said invention has for its object the provision of a panel of the character specied in which the opening in the front portion of the base is provided with a cover-receptacle which may be readily detached from said base when it is desired to obtain access to the plumbing work within the panel for the purposes of inspection or repairs.

Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.

To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends my invention consists in the novel features of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

In said drawings I designates the wall of a room in front of which are arranged the usual hot and cold water supply pipes Il, I2, and vent pipes I3 and soil pipes I4.

I denotes a relatively tall panel or casing vpreferably .formed of sheet metal and comprising hollow pilaster portions I6, forming vertical ducts v or channels which may serve as pipe channels, and Vare united at their upper inner edges by an intermediate web or wall portion Il and forming therewith a vertical recess I8, preferably of less depth than said pilaster portions i6. Each pilaster portion I6 is provided at its outer vertical edge with a rearwardly bent portion Ita, and an inwardly bent portion IGb, terminating in a rearwardly bent flange portion Iiic which may be imbedded in the wall Ill of the room.

The intermediate web or wall portion I'I has its lower edge 2l) terminating a distance above the lower edge of the panel, and the opposite inner .sides of the pilaster portions i6 are cut away to form horizontal recesses 22 (see Fig. 8) whose upper edges register with the lower edge of the intermediate web or wall portion il, and to the rear sides of said pilaster portions I6, along the recesses 22, and along the lower edge wof the intermediate portion Il is secured by Welding or otherwise a channel member comprising a back member 23 and side members 24. The side `members 24 are provided along their upper and lower horizontal edges with vertical anges 2liel and intermediate horizontal flanges Mb, and the back member 23 is provided along its upper horizontal edge with a flange portion 23a registering with said flanges 24a, and along its lower horizontal edge with a forwardly extending liange 23h. registering with the flanges 26h on the side member 24, and at the junctions of said flanges 23b and '24h are secured triangular corner plates 23 having slots 23d therein to receive screws or bolts 23e extending into and anchored in the under side of the lavatory 25 to secure the same in rplace. YThe horizontal recesses 22 together with the intermediate portion Il and its ange V form an langular recess to receive the rear end of a lavatory 25.

Within thespace between the pilaster portions I6, aboveithe lavatory 25, are secured, in spaced relation, , transverse members 26, 26a, which serve y to divide said space into three compartments 21, 28, 29, of which the uppermost'or space 21 is provided with a hinged vertically opening closure 21a; the intermediate space 28, which forms a medicine cabinet, with a horizontally opening door 28a, and the space 29 with brackets 29a to support a shelf 29h.

Upon the inner side of each pilaster portion I6, below the recess 22 therein is disposed a side wall member 38 which is secured at its rear edge to the reduced lower portion or flanges 16d of its respective pilaster portion by bolts or rivets 3|. Each wall member 30 is provided at its upper edge with an inwardly bent flange portion 30a, and at its forward vertical edge with an inwardly bent portion 3l)D terminatingl in a rearwardly ex-V tending flange 300. Each flange portion 30c is provided adjacent to its lower end with inwardly extending studs 33 to engage with registering slots 34 provided in the vertical flanges at the ends of a transverse front wall portion 35. The said side wall members 38 and their associated parts, constitute a console base or cabinetwhich serves partly to support the lavatory 25, and partly as an enclosure for a receptacle, hereinafter more fully described.

The transverse front wall -portion 35 is provided at its upper edge with a plurality of upwardlyprojecting, struck-up tongues 36 to receive therebetween the cooperating tongues 31 depending from the lower edge of the cover-receptacle 3B.

The cover-receptacle 38 is provided upon its opposite sides with rearwardly extending side walls 39, between the separated rear edges of which is disposed a rear wall 40 having flanges 4| secured by rivets or bolts 42 to the side walls 39. II'he said cover-receptacle 38 is provided with a floor 43 having flanges 44 at itsv opposite ends secured by rivets or bolts 45 to the side walls 39. The cover 38 with its rearwardly extending side walls 39, rear wall 40 and bottom 43 constitute the receptacle or container 38 for the reception of wash, towels or other articles. The side walls 39 are offset vertically in order that each angular part 46 thereof may serve as a stop to engage with the fiange 30b of the side wall 30 when said cover 38 is adjusted to closed position, and each side wall 39 is further provided at its upper rear end with an outwardly extending projection 41 which is adapted to engage the rear edge of the flange 30 and serve as a stop to limit the outward or opening movement of the cover 38. A knob 48 is provided upon the outer side of the cover 38 to facilitate the manipulating thereof, and at the inner lower cover of the rear Wall 40, where the same joins the floor 43, the coverreceptacle 38, is provided a counterweight 49 to maintain the cover-receptacle- 38 normally to closed position.

A wedge or filler strip 52 made of Wood or other suitable material and enclosed by a channel member 53, is interposed between the under side of the lavatory 25 and the horizontal flanges 30P- in order to hol-d the lavatory 25 more securely in place, and upon the rear edges of the lavatory 25, where the same enter the recesses 22, 23 a molding strip preferably of pliable material may be applied to form a finished joint, and prevent the seepage of water at those points. The lower edges of the panel may be secured at suitable points to the floor, for example, by angle member 54 and screws 55.

remove the cover-receptacle member 38 to permit of access to the plumbing below the lavatory 25 and within the lower portion of the panel l5 it merely becomes necessary to first open the cover to its extended position, as shown in broken lines at Figs. 3 and 4, in which the projections 41 on the side walls 39 of the cover will be in contact with the inner edges of the flanges 30 of the side walls 30 of the base, and then simultaneously apply pressure to the outer sides oi the walls 39 directly over the projections 41 and thereby force the upper rear corners of said side walls 30 towards each other, and permit the projections 41 to be freed of the inner edges of the flanges 30. The upper end of the cover-receptacle 3B may then be moved further outwardly and cleared of the front edge of the lavatory 25 whereupon the said cover-receptacle 38 may be lifted out, and the tongues 31 at the lower edge thereof disengaged from the upper edge of the front member 35 of the base.

While I have illustrated and described my invention in connection with a lavatory, it will, of course, be understood that the same is not limited or confined thereto as the same is equally applicable to sinks, basins, tubs and other structures.

Having thus described my said invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A unit of the character described comprising a vertical panel forming an enclosure open at the front and having an inwardly facing recess extending about the intermediate portion of the interior thereof, a lavatory member projecting from within said panel and having the rear portion of the rim thereof disposed within said recess, lateral wall portions extending forwardly from said panel below the projecting portion of said lavatory member to form thereunder a cabinet open at the front, and a closure for the open front of said cabinet.

2. A unit of the character described comprising a vertical panel including lateral and rear wall portions having inwardly opening channels therein forming an angular recess, a lavatory member extending at the rear thereof into said angular recess within the panel and projecting forwardly from within said panel, lateral wall members extending forwardly from said panel below said lavatory member to form therewith an enclosure open vat the front, and means for closing the opening.

3. A unit of the character described comprising a panel member, a lavatory member projecting fromy within said panel member, lateral Wall members extending forwardly from said panel below the projecting portion of said lavatory member, and a member mounted for swinging movement between said lateral wall members and forming a closure transversely of said lateral Wall members at the forward edges thereof.

4. A unit of the character described comprising a vertical panel member adapted for securement to a wall and having a recessed portion, a cabinet at the bottom of said panel extending outwardly therefrom having an opening in its front wall, a closure for said opening; said closure being supported partly within and partly without said cabinet, a receptacle carried by said closure within said cabinet, and a lavatory supported in part by said panel and partly by said cabinet and overlying the portion of said closure disposed without said cabinet.

5. A unit of the character described comprising a transverse member adapted for securement to a wall, lateral wall members extending forwardly from said transversemember in spaced apart relation, a lavatory member supported upon the top of said lateral wall members in engagement with said transverse member and projecting forwardly beyond the front edges of said lateral wall members, said lateral wall members and said lavatory member forming a cabinet open at the front, and a receptacle open at the top operating between said lateral wall members and forming a closure for the front of said cabinet, the open top of said receptacle in the closed position thereof underlying the projecting portion of said lavatory member.

6. A unit of the character described comprising a panel adapted for securement to a wall; said panel including vertical marginal channel portions and an intermediate portion uniting the upper parts of said channel portions, said channel portions and said intermediate wall portion having registering horizontal grooves therein, a cabinet including side wall members secured to said channel portions below said grooves, a front connecting the lower forward ends of said side wall members, a hollow closure for closing the portion of said cabinet above said front, said closure being normally disposedv partly Within and partly without said cabinet and being pivoted at the base thereof upon the upper edge of said front, means for limiting the inward and outward movements of said closure, and a lavatory having its rear portions extending into the horizontal grooves on said panel and its front portion supported by said side wall members and overlying the portions of said closure projecting forwardly beyond said side wall members.

A unit of the character described comprising a panel adapted for securement to a wall; said panel including vertical marginal channel portions and an intermediate portion uniting the upper parts of said channel members, said channel portions and said intermediate wall portion having registering horizontal grooves therein, a cabinet including side wall members secured to said channel portions below said grooves, a front connecting the lower forward ends of said side wall members, a hollow closure for closing the portion of said cabinet above said front; said closure` having depending tongues at its lower edge cooperating with tongues extending upwardly from the top of said front, means on said closure cooperating with means on said side wall members for limiting the inward and outward movements of said closure, and a lavatory having its rear portions extending into the horizontal grooves on said panel and its front portions supported by said side wall members and overlying the portions of said closure projecting forwardly beyond said side wall members.

8. A bath room unit comprising a panel adapted for securement to a wall; said panel including vertical marginal channel portions and an intermediate wall portion uniting the upper parts of said channel members, means on said panel for receiving a portion of a lavatory, a cabinet including side wall members secured to the lower portions of said channel portions, a front detachable member connecting the lower ends of said side wall members, a hollow receptacle constituting closure for closing the open portion of said cabinet above said detachable front member, said closure being pivotally supported at its lower edge upon said detachable front, the side walls of said closure each having a portion offset vertically relative to the remainder thereof adapted to engage with the front edges of the side wall members of said cabinet to limit the closing movement of said closure, means for maintaining said closure in closed position, stops at the upper rear ends of the side walls of said closure adapted to engage with the forward edges of the side walls of said cabinet to limit the outward movement of said closure, and a lavatory having its rear portion received by said panel and its forward portion supported by the side wall members of the cabinet and overlying the forwardly extending portion of the closure thereof.

9. A unit of the character described comprising a transverse member, lateral wall members eX- tending forwardly from said transverse member in spaced apart relation, a lavatory member supported upon the top of said lateral wall members in engagement with said transverse member to form a cabinet open at the front and projecting forwardly beyond the front edges of said lateral wall members, a receptacle open at the top operating between said lateral wall members and forming a closure for the front of said cabinet, the open top of said receptacle in the closed position thereof underlying the projecting portions of said lavatory member, and means for limiting the inward and outward movements of said closure.

10. A unit of the character described comprising a transverse member, lateral wall members extending forwardly from said transverse member in spaced apart relation, a front panel connecting the lower forward ends of said side wall members, a lavatory member supported above said lateral wall members in engagement with said transverse member to form a cabinet open at the front above said front panel, and projecting forwardly beyond the front edges of said lateral wall members, a hollow closure open at the top for closing the open front of said cabinet, means at the base thereof detachably engageable with said front panel for pivotally supporting said closure, and means on said closure engageable with the forward edges of said lateral wall members to limit the inward movement of said closure and position the open top thereof in the closed position under the projecting portion oi said lavatory member.

11. A unit of the character described comprising a transverse member, lateral wall members extending forwardly from said transverse member in spaced apart relation, a lavatory member spanning the top of said lateral wall members in engagement with said transverse member to form a cabinet therebetween open at the front, a panel extending transversely between said lateral wall members at the bottom thereof, a receptacle open at the top for closing the front of said cabinet, interengaging means upon the base of the receptacle and the top edge of said panel for detachably mounting said receptacle for pivotal movement between said lateral wall members, means for limiting the inward movement of said receptacle to posititon the open top thereof in the closed position thereof under the projecting portion of said lavatory member, and means for limiting the outward movement of said receptacle to prevent disengagement of said pivotal means, said last named limiting means including cooperating parts movable transversely out of alignment to allow the disengagement of the receptacle from the pivotal mounting.
