The present invention relates to umbrella sticks and has for its primary object to provide a sectional stick of this character by means of Which the lower portion of the stick may be arranged in a position out of alignment with the upper portion thereof in order that the umbrella may be centrally supported over a person without interference by the stick.

A further object is to provide a sectional stick of this character embodying an intermediate connecting link between the upper and lower portions of the stick and adapted to telescope into said upper and lower portions when the umbrella is in a folded position.

A further object is to provide means for rigidly securing the link in a horizontal position with the lower portion of the stick off-set from the longitudinal axis of the upper portion of the stick when the umbrella is in rased or open position, whereby the central portion of the umbrella may be supported above a person without interference with the stick.

An additional object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevational view of the upper portion of the umbrella stick showing the same in position when the umbrella is open and with part broken away and shown in section, and

Figure 2 is a similar view showing the stick when the umbrella is in a closed or folded position.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the lower portion of an umbrella stick and the numeral 6 designates the upper portion thereof adjacent the upper end of which the umbrella frame 'l is secured in any suitable manner. The frame includes a brace 8 pivotally connected to a collar 9 slidably mounted on the stick sections 5 and 6 during the raising and lowering of the umbrella.

The sections 5 and 6 preferably are of hollow construction and have their adjacent ends oppositely beveled as shown at IO and Il for conformably abutting each other when the sections are in vertical alignment as shown in Figure 2.

The lower end of the section 6 is provided with a transversely extending pin IZ and the upper end of the section 5 is provided with a transversely extending pin 13, the pins 12 and l3 being slidably positioned in slotted openings [4 and l5 respectively extending longitudinally in a link member l6, said link member being of a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the sections 5 and 6 for insertion in said last named sections when the same are in 'alignment.

The side walls of the sections 5 and 6, at points opposite from the beveled portions Il] and Il are respectively provided with openings l'l and 18 for receiving the end portion of the link l6 when the sections 5 and 6 are moved in a direction away from each other and the link IB pivoted on the pins l2 and l3 into a horizontal position as shown in Figure 1.

The link adjacent each end is provided With spring catches 19 and 20, each of said springs having a notch Zi formed therein for engaging the edge portion of the adjacent stick section to releasably lock the link IG in its horizontal position.

In this manner it Will be apparent that the section 5 of the stick is maintained in an off-set parallel relation with respect to the longitudinal axis of the section B and in a position toward one edge of the umbrella in order that the umbrella may be centrally positioned over a person without interference by the lower portion of the stick.

In the operation of the device, with the umbrella in a closed or lowered position as. shown in Figure 2, the collar 9 is raised upwardly until the same is engaged by the spring catch 22 whereupon the sections 5 and 6 of the stick may be moved away from each other and the link I B swung into a horizontal position and secured to the respective sections by the spring catches l9 and 26. When it is desired to lower the umbrella the spring catches 19 and 2ll are released, enabling the link 16 to be moved into longituinal alignment with the sections 5 and 6 and telescoped therein, whereupon the collar 9 may be released and moved downwardly along the stick.

It is believed the details of construction and manner of operation will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.

I-Iaving thus described the invention, what I claim is:

1. In an Umbrella stick, a pair of hollow stick sections, a link pivotally connected at each end to said sections, a pivoted and slidable direct connection between each end of the link and the respective sections of the stick and adapted for telescoping into each of said sections and means carried by the link engageable With the respective sections for securing the link in a. horizontal position With the stick sections off-set relative to each other.

2. In an umbrella stick, a pair of holloW stick sections, transversely extending pins carried by each of said sections, a link having longitudinally extending slots therein for slidably receiving said pin, said link being adapted for telescoping into said sections when the sections are positioned in alignment and means for securing the link at right angles to said sections for maintaining the sections in off-set parallel position.

3. In an umbrella stick, a pair of hollow stick sections having abuttng oppositely beveled edges, each of said sections having an opening formed in the wall thereof opposite from its beveled edge, a link having longitudinally extending slotted openings therein, transversely extending pins carried by each stick section slidably inserted in said slotted openings, the ends of said link being adapted for insertion in the openings of the respective stick sections and spring catches carried by the link engageable With an edge portion of each of the sections for securing the link in a right angle position with respect to said sections and with the sections in an off-set parallel relation.
