Description

Patented Mar. 21,1939
, -umrao STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 3 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bed clothes generally, although more particularly to bed sheets.
After the making of beds in the usual manner certain difliculties are encountered. Probably the most disconcerting difiiculty arises when the top bedsheet pulls out from the foot of the bed as a result of restlessness on the part of the sleeper thereon. The top sheet, being the first of the covers, normally has more tendency to creep and pull out from the foot of the mattress around which it is tucked, thereby exposing the feet of the sleeper to the roughersurfaces of the remainder of the covers, thereby causing additional and unnatural restlessness to the sleeper.
The principal object of my invention is to pro- I vide a bed sheet which has a mattress-engaging pocket at one end thereof whereby the foot of the sheet will be maintained'in a fixed position relative to the mattress.
Anotherobject of my invention is to provide a bed sheet of the above character in which the pocket is normally in face-to-face relation with the body fabric, thereby creating a bed sheet which is easy to launder, easy to iron, and which will fold without bulkiness.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bed sheet of the above character which is f simple in construction, thereby facilitating economical manufacturing thereof.
With these and other objects in view which will i more fully appear, the nature of the invention will I be moreclearly understood by following the description, the appended claims, and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1' is a plan view of a blank of material from which a bed sheet is constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the flap-extended,
' Figure 2 is a similar view thereof but showing the flap in its normal or pocket-forming position,
Figure 3 is a vertical section showing the sheet applied to a bed mattress,
' Figure 4 is'a plan view of a blank of material from which a modified form of my invention is constructed and showing the flap extended, and
Figure 5 is a similar view but showing the flap in its normal or pocket-forming position.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing. Referring to the drawing in detail, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, my invention is embodied in a bed sheet A comprising a body portion 5 having a centrally disposed foldable end flap 6 overlying the same. The end flap 6 is normally disposed in face-to-face contact with the body portion 5 and is joined thereto by spaced lines 1, I 5 of stitches disposed in parallelism with the side edges of said body portion, thereby forming a resultant pocket 8 for receiving one end of a mattress. The lines 1, I of stitches are spaced from the side edges of the body portion 5 there- 10 by providing resultant side flaps 9, 9 for covering the side walls of the mattress.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5, my invention is embodied in a bed sheet B comprising a body portion in having a foldable end fiap l I overlying said body portion and being coextensive with the width thereof. The end flap II is normally disposed in face-toface contact with the body portion I 0 and is joined thereto by spaced lines l2, I! of stitches disposed in parellelism with the side edges of said body portion, thereby forming a resultant pocket I 3 for receiving one end of a mattress. The lines l2, ii! of stitches are spaced from the side edges of the body portion Ill thereby providing resultant side flaps H, H for covering the side walls of the mattress. The ends of the flap H beyond the lines l2, l2 of stitches are further joined to the body portion by lines l5 of stitches.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a bed sheet having a mattress-receiving pocket, which is simple in construction and which is economical to manufacture, and not bulky to pack.
It is of course to be understood that the details of structure and arrangement of parts may be variously changed and modified without departing fromthe spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim:
1. A bed sheet comprising a one piece body portion having an end fiap overlying the same and normally disposed in face-to-face contact therewith, said flap being joined to said body portion by spaced lines of stitches disposed in parallelism with the side edges of said body portion to form a resultant pocket for receiving one end of a mattress, said lines of stitches being spaced from the side edges of the body portion to provide resultant side fiaps for covering the side walls of the pocket and mattress. I
2. A'bet sheet comprising a one-piece body portion having one end portion transversely folded thereover and normally disposed in face-to-face contact therewith, said flap being joined to said body portion by spaced lines of stitches disposed in parallelism with the side edges of said body portion to form a resultant pocket for receiving one end of a mattress, said lines of stitches being, spaced from the side edges of the body portion to provide resultant side flaps for covering the side walls of the pocket and mattress.
3. A bed sheet comprising a. one-piece body portion having one end portion transversely fold ed thereover and normally disposed in face-toface contact therewith, said end flap being coextensive with the width of said body portion, said flap being joined to said body portion by spaced lines of stitches disposed ir'iparallelism with the side edges of said body portion to form a resultant pocket for receiving one end of a mattress,
'said lines of stitches being from the side edges of the body portion to provide resultant side flaps for covering the side walls of the pocket and mattress.
