My invention relates generally to beds, and

more particularly to a sheet that is constructed so as to function as a mattress cover, and one of the principal objects of my invention is, to construct a bed-covering sheet wherein the main body portion is composed of a single piece of fabric cut to proper shape and having its corners united by stitching or otherwise, so as to form depending portions that overlie the sides and ends of a mattress and also portions that extend a short distance inwardly onthe under side of the mattress from the sides and ends thereof, thus providing a. covering sheet that will retain its position on the mattress, and which sheet, in use, will not pull and wrinkle as a result of movements of the occupant of the bed of which the mattress forms a part.

A further object of my invention is, to provide a mattress-covering sheet that may be easily and quickly applied to or removed from the mattress,

thereby effecting a material saving of time and labor in making up beds, which consideration is especially important in hotels, hospitals and the like, where a large'number of beds are in use.

A further object of my invention is, to construct a mattress-covering'sheet, and particularly the sides, ends and corners thereof, so that the latter will fit neatly without wrinkles over the sides and ends of the mattress.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangements of parts that will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

Figure 1 is a. plan view of the mattress-covering sheet, cut to proper shape and illustrating the same as it appears before the corner edges are sewn together to form the side and end covering portions.

Figure 2 is a perspective view looking against the under side of a mattress to which one of my improved sheets is applied.

Figure 3 is a cross section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.

Figure 4 is a detail view looking against the under side of one of the comers of the mattresscovering sheet.

Figure 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of the corner construction.

Figure 6 is a detail view of a modified form of that portion of the sheet that underlies the mattress.

Between the side and end covering portions II and i2 and the outer edges of the fabric utilized in producing the mattress cover, narrow portions l3 of the fabric constitute strips that are adapted to extend inwardly from the lower portions of the side and end covering strips H and I2 and to lie immediately beneath the under face or surface of the mattress.

To produce the side and end covering portions H and i2 and the underlying portions It, the corners of the rectangular piece of fabric from which the covering sheet is formed are cut away on diagonal lines designated by it, and which lines are disposed at 45 relative to the side and end edges of the sheet and intermediate the endsof the inclined edges Hi, the fabric is cut away to form notches 85, the edges i6 01' which are respectively parallel with the side and end edges of the fabric from which the covering sheet is formed.

After the fabric has been cut to the shape as just described, and as illustrated in Figure. 1, the, edges it of the notches I 5 are brought together and stitched and likewise the edges 14 are brought together and stitched, with the result that when the covering sheet is completed, the portions II and I 2 overlie respectively the sides and ends of the mattress and the portions I3 underlie those portions of the mattress immediately adjacent the side and end faces thereof.

In order to strengthen the corners between the underlying portions l3 of the cover, substantially triangular gussets ll, of material somewhat heavier than the material from which the sheet is formed, are inserted in the corners between the inner edges of the underlying strip portions l 3 and to accommodate a certain amount of pulling strains without tearing, these gussets I! may cover without the gussets [1.

Instead of forming the main body portion of the sheet from a single piece of material, my invention contemplates the construction of a covering sheet having separately formed corner portions that are suitably secured. to the corners of the main body of the sheet, as illustrated in Fig. and further, the members it that underlie the mattress may be connected with lacings or with longitudinally or transversely disposed straps.

In order to take up any slack that might develop in the underlying portions i3 of the cover, substantially V-shaped portions may be cut from the intermediate portions of said underlying members and the edges of the material at the sides of the cut-away portions brought together and stitched so as to cause the underlying portions to lie practically flat. against the under side of the mattress. (See Fig. 6.)

Further, the covering member constructed in accordance with my invention maybe utilized as a cover for cots, day beds, surgical tables, pallets and the like, and also as a cover for benches, tables and other pieces of furniture.

A sheet of my improved construction may be easily and quickly applied to or removed from a mattress, and when properly positioned therevupon, the sides and ends fit neatly over the side and end faces of the mattress and the main body portion ill of the sheet is maintained in smooth condition on the upper surface of the mattress.

Inasmuch as the main body portion of my improved mattress-covering sheet is formed from a single piece of fabric, a material saving of time,

labor and consequent expense in the manufacture of the covering sheets is effected.

Thus it will be seen that I have provided a.

mattress-covering sheet that is relatively simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture and very effective in performing the functions forwhich it is intended.

It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved mattress-covering sheet may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

As a new article of manufacture, a mattress covering sheet, comprising an inverted boxlike member having a closed top for covering the upper surface of a mattress, depending end and side walls to cover the sides and ends of said mattress and inwardly directed extensions of the elongated free edges of said end and side walls underlying marginal portions of the bottom of said mattress, said extensions being trapezoidal in plan, adjacent ends of said extensions being connected to provide a continuous rectangular flange, and a resilient reinforcing gusset at each corner of said flange, straight edge portions of said gussets extending across said corners inwardly thereof.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a mattress covering sheet, comprising an inverted box-like member having a closed top for covering the upper surface of a mattress, depending end and side walls to cover the sides and ends of said mattress and inwardly directed extensions of the elongated free edges of said'end and side walls underlying marginal portions of the bottom of said mattress, said extensions being trapezoidal in plan, adjacent ends of said extensions being connected to provide a continuous rectangular flange, and a resilient triangular reinforcing gusset at each corner of said flange, the bases of said gussets extending across said corners inwardly thereof.
