4 Claims.
'Ihis invention relates to a package for food products and-the like.
Inthe sealing of food products, particularly those of semi-solid character, such as iceecream, cheese and the like, it is desirable to provide a carton of simple construction, which is both in-V expensive as to manufacturing cost and also to packaging costs, and it is furthermore desirable to provide a carton which may be easily sealed l to effectually enclose and preserve the contents thereof. Itisl the principal object of the present invention, therefore, to provide a packaging structure which includes a lining sheet and an outer sheet which, when folded and locked in 15 position, form an enclosing carton for `the product.
The present invention contemplates the provision of a sheet of stiff material, such as cardboard, upon which is placed a lining sheet of a 'zo material impervious to moisture and the like, and which t'wo sheets of material may then be folded and held in a temporary assembled position while a product is being placed therein, after which a sealing element is applied to complete the carton 25 and to hold the foldedstructure in its assembled condition around the product, whereby a complete and final package is produced.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which;
'3o Figure l is a view in perspective showing the assembled carton with which the present inven tion is concerned.

Fig. 8 is a view in transverse section similar to that shown in Fig. 7 in which the assembled and packedl carton in nal form is shown. to Fig. 9 is a fragmentary View of the package assembly with the cover blank removed. V
Fig. 10 isa fragmentary view of the cover with its locking Atang in position.
Referring more particularly to the drawings,
456 I0 indicates a blank from which a container body i is made and with which thepresent invention is designed to operate. II indicates the blank vof a cover and sealing member adapted to interlock with the body member and to hold the carton sealed and in package form. The blank 54 I0 is generally square in outline and has an octagonal center portion I2 scored therein. This octagonal eld I2 is bounded by score marks I3 to 2 0, inclusive, and forms the bottom of a y container. 'I'he sides of the field I2 as repre- 10 sented by the score marks carry side wall sections which when folded at right angles to the bottom field I2 form the sidewalls of an octagonal container. Thewall sections adjoining f the score marks I3, I5, vII and I9, are each des- 15 ignated by thenumeral 2l. .The wall sections adjoining the score marks I4, I6, I8 and 20 are each designated at 22. The sections 2|, are interlocking sections to receive lock tangs carried by the cover member II as will be hereinafter described. These sections have a transversely extending slit 23 extending parallel to their outer e ges and suitably spaced therefrom. To facilitate in the interlocking operation `oppositely disposed inclined slits 24 and 25 are formed in the 26 portion of the members 2| between their outer edges and the slits 23, and are disposed a distance from the ends of the slits 23 as will accommodate the lock tangs of thecover member.
Parallel score marks 26 and 2l extend fromthe 30 inner score marks previously described and to the outer edges of the portions 2|. The distance between' these score marks isa' distance' representing the length of the score marks bounding the octagonal center field I2. The marginal 35 side edges of the portions 2| iiare outwardly as indicated at 28 and form triangular portions 29 which produce overlapping corner flaps for the finished container. 'I'he portions 22 have opposite parallel sides 30 and 3| whichare spaced 40 a distance apart equal to the length of the score marks of the octagonal center. The portions 22 are also formed with a transverse score mark 32 which is parallel to the inner score mark of the octagonal field and is spaced a distance from- 45 the inner score mark equal to that between the sides of the octagonal field I2 and the outer marginal edge 33 of the portions 2l. Thisvdistance represents the height ofthe container. Formed as a part of the portions 22 and extending be- 50 yond the score marks 32 is a cover flap 34 which lies at the corner of the blank and has opposite vmarginal edges 35 and 36 which are in longitudinal alignment with the vmarginal edges 33 of the portions 2i. These edges terminate in 66 shoulders 31 and 38-which are at right angles to outer marginal edges and meet with the side edges 30 and 3|. The length of the triangular portions 29 as represented by the distance from the score marks 26 and 21 to the corner of the triangular portions lying along the marginal edge 33 is shorter than the distance between the score marks 26 or 21 and the edges 30 or 3| of the wall portions 22. This is provided for a special purpose to be hereinafter set forth. The cover blank is substantially square in shape and has a hexagonal center portion agreeing in dimensions substantially with that of the hexagonal field I2 of the body blank |8. This hexagonal field is designated at 39 and is bounded by marginal edges 40 and 41, inclusive. The edges 40, 42, 44 and 46 are the outer edges of the blank. The edges 4|, 43, 45, and 51 are diagonal I score marks adjacent the corners of the blank.
These score marks separate locking tangs 48 from the octagonal eld 39. The tangs have outer marginal edges 49 and 50 which are at right angles to each other and converge in a rounded point 5|. Locking hooks 52 are formed by recessed portions 53 adjacent to the base of each of the tangs. 'I'liese hooks pass through the slits 23 in the portions 2| of the body member and interlock therewith to hold the cover in place and to-hold all of the sides of the body member l in their assembled relationship to preserve the shape of a sealed package.
Folded within the blank I8 forming the body 'of the carton is a thin lining sheet 55. This sheet agrees in configuration with the eld I2 of the blank I8, but is of larger overall dimensions than this field so that its marginal edge will overlap the upper face of the food product; By reference to Fig. of the drawings, the inner liner is shown with the' folded marks indicated by dotted lines as they occur when thecarton is folded. It will there be seen that the corners of the lining sheet 55 fold over upon each other and conform to the octagona1 side faces of the food product which is packed within the carton.
By reference to Fig. 6 a top lining element is shown which comprises a sheet of relatively stil material 56 folded within a lining sheet 51. The lining sheets 55 and 51 are preferably made of material which is impervious to moisture and 'air and will not contaminate the food product or be deteriorated thereby.
Attention is directed to the fact that there are no interlocking elements provided on the blank f8 which interlock with any part of the blank I0. In other words, the blank I0 does not require any parti cular assembling operation to tuck tangs or locking' menbers into cooperating parts of the blank. The blank I8 is held in its final assembled position with the food product therein by the interlocking action produced by the tangs of the cover blank ll, which fit within the locking slits 23 of the blank l0, and by the interlocking action of the portions 34 of the blank I0 in engagement as they are folded under and are held by the cover blank This construction is particularly disclosed in the perspective view indicated in Figs. 9 and 10 of the drawings.
In Fig. 9 a fragmentary view is shown in which the cover blank has been removed. One of the members 22 has been brokenv away so that the folds in the lining sheet 55 will appear.
Here it will be seen that this material is folded.
upon itself in a gusset-.like manner, as indicated at 58, and that the triangular portions at the sides of the members 2|, as defined by the score marks 26 and 28, project into the fold of the gusset so that the lining sheet and the blank I0 will be interlocked when the package has been completely sealed. It will also be seen that the naps 34 are folded over the top of the package and that they Will overhang the upper edges of the folds 2|.
Referring to Fig. 10, it will be seen that when the blank Il is assembled with the blank I8 the center fold 39 of the blank |0 will conform to the top conguration of the package, and that the locking tangs 48 will fit down through the slits 23- of the blank l0 and overlap the' edges 38 and 39 of the flaps 34 to prevent the aps 34 from withdrawing from their folded positions. Thus, the entire structure will be held assembled by the locking action of the members 49 of the cover blank when they interlock with the blank l0 and are projected through the slits 23 therein.
In order to rapidly and efficiently form, ll and seal the package, a mold 60 is provided. This mold has a bottom wall 6| through which a central opening 62 is formed, and also provided with a plurality of side walls 63 which agree in number, height and width with the sides of the package to be formed.
' It will be understood that While the package is here shown as being octagonal in shape that `other forms might befound convenient.
It is preferable that alternate side faces of the mold shall be provided with assembly pin structures 64. These constitute a pin 64' yieldably held by a spring 65 and projecting through an opening in the inner, face of alternate side walls.
When packaging materials within the package structure here disclosed it is desirable to place the blank I8 within the mold 68 with the sides 2| of the blank registering with the sides of the mold which carry the assembly pin's 64'. 'I'liese pins have been so positioned as to insure that the portion of the walls 2| above the slits 23 will be exed to provide a relatively narrow throat 23 which communicates with an adjacent slit 23, this structure being shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings, When the blank is so positioned within the mold its portions 29 will overlap the portions 22, as particularly shown in Fig. '1 and the flaps mold separately from a liner sheet 55 that this showing has been made for the sake of clarity, and that in fact the liner sheet will stand Within the inside of the blank as generally indicated by dotted lines in the figure.
The material to be packed is then placed within the blank I0 as held within the mold. Attention is directed to the fact that the mold is used as the only means for holding the blank in a temporary assembled and shaped condition, and that if the blank is removed from the. mold it would tend to spread out to its original form since the parts of the blank do not interlock. After the material has been placed within the folded and lined blank to a. level approximating the upper edge of the mold, the cover lining, as shown in Fig. 6, is placed upon the material and the upper free edges of the lining- 55 are folded these will pass through the throats 23 and into a locking position through the slits 23 of the blank Hl. Pressure is then exerted against the bottom I2 of the blank I0 through the opening 62 of the mold to eject the complete package from the mold. It will thus be evident that the cover blank Il will hold the entire structure in assembled position with its various parts properly interlocked.
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention as now known to me, it will be understood that various changes may be made in combination, construction and arrangement of parts by those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by' Letters Patent is: 1. A container comprising an inner wrapper for a produca said wrapper having a central polygonal eld and a marginal portion around the entire perimeter thereof for forming side walls when foldedat right angles to the centerv iield and. being scored to form intermediate gussets, a cover Wrapper having a central polygonal eld and a, marginal iieldA adapted to receive said inner wrapper, the marginal iield forming outer side walls agreeing with the side walls of the wrapper and providing tangs along edges thereof adapted to Afold into the gussets of the inner wrapper, and a top cover of polygonal shape `adapted to be placed over the cover wrapper to engage the same and to hold the parts of the container in their folded and formed condition and to close the container.
2.A container comprising an inner wrapper for a product, said wrapper having a central `polygonal field and a marginal portion around the entire perimeter vthereof for forming side walls when folded at right angles to the center :field and being scored' to form intermediate gussets, a cover wrapper having a central polygonal eld and a marginal iield adapted to receive said inner wrapper, the marginal iield forming outer side walls agreeing with the side walls o f the wrapper and providing tangs along edges thereof' adapted to fold into the gussets of the inner 3 wrapper, a top cover of polygonal shape adapted to be placed over the cover wrapperto engage the same and to hold the parts of the container in their folded and formed condition and to close the container, and interlocking means between the top cover and the cover wrapper for 3. Same as 2, adding the following: said interlocking means being formed by slits formed in the walls of the marginal iields of the cover `holding the top cover in position.
wrapper and tangs carried at the marginal edges of the top cover and projecting into and interlocking with said slits.
4. A container comprising an inner wrapper for a product, said wrapper having an octagonal central iield, from each edge of which a rectangular marginal field extends to provide a side wall for a container formed by folding said rectangular fields at right angleslto the center eld, triangular portions extendingbetween the contiguous edges of the rectangular elds and vfolded upon themselves to form triangulargussets ly ing against the faceof the contiguous side walls.V l
