2 Claims; (on. 221-49 g The present invention relates to new and useful improvements indispensing containers, and more particularly to improvements in a container having a. closure and a pouring spout adapted to be attached thereto for dispensing" the contents of thecontainer.

An object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type wherein the container is provided with a hung closure having-inwardly directed holding means, and wherein the pouring spout is provided with means adapted to be disposed beneath and engageable with the holding means on the closure for rotatably and detachably securing the spout thereto.

A further object of the invention is to provide a' container of the above type,- wherein the bung closure is providedwith an inwardly directed' bead and a scored portion adapted .to provide a dispensing opening, and wherein the spout is provided-with a pouring lip and a sealing portion provided with upwardly extending resilient lugs engageable beneath the bead on the closure for rotatably and detachably securing the spout thereto The. above and other objects of the invention will in part be obvious, and will be hereinafter more fully pointed out.

Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, one form of the invention is shown ior purposesof illustration. In this form of themvention, there is shown a container having a cylindrical body portion Ill. to which a can end it is secured by the usual double seam l2. It 'is to be clearly understood that the body portion of the container may be of any configuration and that .the can end ll may be secured thereto in any, suitable manner. The portion of the spout l8 beneath the pouring lip I9 is provided with an outwardly extending bead 22 which is adapted to fltbeneath and engage with the head it on the closure. The sealing wall portion 20 of the spout 'I8 is provided with a plurality of upwardly extending curved lugs 23. These lugs 23 are separated fromone another by slots and are shaped so as to snugly fit beneath and to engage with the bead IS on the closure. The lugs 23 are inherently resilient so as to permit the spout to be-attached to and removed from the closure 1 When the container has been filled and the closure seamed thereto, the pouring :spout l8 may be either attached directly to the closure, or

- it may be furnished separately for subsequentattachment theretowhen it is desired to'open the container by punching the scored portion l'l so as to dispense the contents thereof. In attaching the spout to the closure,,it is forced inwardly thereof so that the resilient holding lugs 23 will pass over the inner edge of the head it and snapbeneath the head, as shown in Figure 2. 'Thus, the holding lugs 23, together with the outward bead 22 on the spout portion, maintain the spout on the container and permit rotation of the spout relative to the closure.

When it is desired to dispense the contents of the container, the spout I8 is turned to the position shownin Figure 2. In this position of the spout,the opening 2l'in the sealing wall 20 of the spout is in register with the scored portion I! on the bottom wall I 5 of the closure. Thus, the scored portion 11 may be punched through to provide aligned openings through which the contents of the container may be poured. When, however, the spout is located at the position shown in Figure 1, the opening 2| in the spout is out of register with the opening in the bottom wall of the closure so that the remaining portion of the wall 20 of the spout will overlie and close the opening IT in the closure.

When the container is empty, the spout l8 may be removed from the closure and used again with another container of the same general type, thus' obviating the necessity of providing a separate and permanently attached spout witheach container.

While one form of the invention has been shown and described for purposes of illustration, it is to be clearly understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as setforth in the appended claims.

We claim:

1. A container comprising a body portion, a container end secured to said body portion and having a filling opening therein, a closure for the filling opening having a bottom wall and a depending side opening, the said side wall of said closure being secured to the container end around the filling opening therein and having an inwardly extending bead spaced above thesaid bottom wall, the bottom wall of said closure having a scored portion adapted to provide'a dispensing opening, and a spout having a sealing portion disposed in contact with the bottom wall of said closure and having a pouring lip connected to a portion of the wall fitting within the filling edge of said sealing portion, the remaining portion of the edge of said sealing portion having a plurality of upwardly and outwardly extending resilient holding lugs adapted to engage beneath the bead on said closure for removably and rotatably attaching the spout to the closure, and said sealing portion having an opening adapted to be brought into and out of register with the dispensing opening in the bottom wall of saidclosure.

'2. A container comprising a body portion, a container end secured to said body portion and having a filling opening therein, a closure for the filling opening having a bottom wall and a depending side wall fitting within the filling opening, the said side wall of said closure being secured to the container end around the filling opening therein and having an inwardly extending bead spaced above the said bottom wall, the bottom wall of said closure having a scored portion adapted to provide a dispensing opening, anda spout having'a sealing portion disposed in contact with the bottom wall of said closure and having a pouring lip connected to a portion of the edge of said sealing portion, said spout having an outward head in the region of the connection between the lip and the sealing portion for engaging. beneath the head on said closure, the remaining portion of the edge of said sealing portion having a plurality of upwardly and outwardly extending resilient holding lugs adapted to engage beneath the bead on said closure for removably and rotatably attaching the spout to the closure, and said sealing portion having an opening adapted to be brought into and out of register with the dispensing opening in the bottom wall of said closure.
