claims.
This application is a substitute for application filed August 12, 1936, Serial No. 95,520.
This invention relates to cigarette cases and more particularly to that type of case in which the characteristic features reside in providing a thin, flat, elongated case adapted for being comfortably carried in the pocket of the user or in a lady's handbag; in providing a case of this type into which the contents of a pocket of twenty cigarettes may be conveniently stored; which may 'be expeditiously opened for the extraction of a cigarette by the user or by others; and which may be readily closed when out of use.
With the above and other contemplated features in mind, the invention resides in the provision of a cigarette case substantially as illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which a preferred form of the invention is shown and which is described in detail in the following speci- S0 fication.
closed cigaa case having two similar case portions i andfi.
and, as will be understood from the followingdescription, these portions are made of a width to accommodate ten cigarettes placed yside by side and of a length to accommodate two cigarettes placed end to end.
In the present instance it'is preferred to provide a neat hinge 1 between the case portions and arrange to hold said portions in closed engagement as by a spring latch I on`one portion and keeper means 9, therefor on the other portion.
To enhance the appearance of the case, one of the case portions such as 5, may be provided with end pieces Ill which are also preferably formed' triangular in section to obviate bllmt, bulgy ends on the case and thus aiding in carrying out one of the purposes ofthe invention, namely, the provision of a thin. smooth and flat article having esthetic appeal. v
Each end wall of the case portion G is adapted to be covered by its respective end piece il and to be abutted by the respective Iend wall I! of the case portion 5, and it is to those latter end walls that the end pieccs ll are fastened.
To the inner face of each end wall ii there is hingedly secured a cigarette rack II having a bottom wall it and side walls I! suitably ornamented and lightened as'by cut-outs I..
' Each rack is preferably made of a height someapplication Serial No. This application Oc- 233,951
what greater than half the length of a cigarette and of a width to accommodate ten cigarettes, being adapted to be housed within the case when said case is closed.
The mentioned hinge ll between each rack and the case portion 6 is preferably provided with a torsional spring Il which tends to lift the rack into a position substantially normal to the case member I when the case is opened. Further, these springs ll are made sufiiciently strong so that upon release of the latch I, the springs, in lifting the racks, also lift the case cover portion I so the condition shown in Figure 2 is attained. This is accomplished by the sliding engagement between the corner I! of the rack and the inner surface of the case cover i.
The case is closed by merely swinging the racks down against the case portion 6 and snapping the cover portion closed. It will be noted that the cigarettes in the oppositely disposed racks are in aligned, rather than overlapping, relation and it is this relation which permits the thin flat construction herein contemplated.
Although the hinge 'I in the present instance is not provided with spring means for lifting the cover upon release of the latch, such spring means may be employedif desired. In this event, the
springs ll may be made somewhat weaker.
From the foregoing, it can be seen that a deo sirable cigarette case has been provided in its preferred form of embodiment: It can also be seen that the case may be employed for articles other than cigarettes and that immaterial changes by skilled persons, may readily be made without departing from th spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed. Hence, only the limitations imposed by the prior art and not the present details of disclosure should form the basis of interpretation of said claims.
I clalm: l I
' 1. A cigarette case or the like comprising a casing having two hinged members, said casing having a length at least equal to the length of two eigarettes, and a cigarette rack hingedly secured to each of oppositely disposed end portions of one of said members, said cigarette racks being open ended opposite their hinge ends and being shorter from hinge end to open end than the length of a cigarette, whereby cigarettes disposed in said racks will extend therefrom to be access!- ble for withdrawai.
2. A. cigarette case or the like comprising a casing having two hinged members, said casing havingl a length at least equal to the length of two cigarettes, and a width at least equal to ten cigarettes placed side by side, and a cigarette rack hingedly secured to each of oppositely disposed portions of one of said members, each said rack having an open end opposite its hinged end and being shorter from end to end than the length of a cigarette Whereby cigarettes disposed in said racks will extend therefrom to be accessible for withdrawal.
3. A case for cigarettes or the like comprising a substantially rectangular case member having a wall at each narrower edge thereof, a rack hingedly mounted on each wall, resilient means for maintaining said racks in a position substantially normal to said member, said racks also being adapted to be positioned fiat against the inner face of the case member, and a case cover hinged to one of the longer edges of the case member and latchable to the other of the longer edges of the case member, said cover being adapted when released from the latch to be lifted by said racks during their movement from the mentioned at position to the mentioned normal position.
4. A case for cigarettes or the like comprising a substantially rectangular case member having a wall at each narrower edge thereof, a rack hingedly mounted on each wall, resilient means for maintaining said racks in a position substantially normal to said member, said racks also being adapted to be positioned flat against the inner face of the case member, each said rack having an open end opposite its hinged end and being shorter from end to end than the length of a cigarette, whereby cigarettes disposed in said racks will extend therefrom and be accessible for withdrawal when the racks are in said normal position, and a case cover hinged to one of the longer edges of the case member and latchable to the other of the longer edges of said member, said cover being adapted when released from the latch, to be lifted by said racks during their movement from the mentioned flat position to the mentioned normal position.
