FIGURE ADAPTED FDR ADVERTISING AND TOY PURPOSES y Filed Sept. 22, 1938 BY 9L l ATTOR N EY vPatented Nov. 21, 1939 UNITED sm'res FIGURE ADAP'rED son ADvEnTIsING AND 'roy PURPOSES Marcel James Eisler, New York, N. YY., assigner to Conmar Products Corporation, Bayonne, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application September 22, 1938, Serial No. 231,133
Claims.
This invention relates to articles of manufacture simulating a gure, and more especially a human figure.
The primary object of my invention is to gen-r 5.; erally improve figure simulations of the specifled character. A more particular object resides in the provision of a figure suitable for display purposes, and more especially for the display and advertisement of slide fasteners. Considered in a slightly different aspect, another object of my invention resides in the provision of a figure suitable for toy purposes, and which may more specifically simulate an erect military or similar uniformed ligure standing at attention. Considered ,5; in this aspect, an object of the invention is to make it readily possible to provide similar figures which may, however, be simulatedly garbed or uniformed in different colors so that they may be separated into different groups. Another object is to provide a basic toy figure in combination with (Y a single piece of externally applied simulated clothing, this externally applied clothing simulation being a slide fastener of conventional type. and the combination being such that a child may i readily assemble the parts of the combination. i The color of the slide fastener may be varied to produce differently colored figures as was above mentioned. The appearance or dress of the figure may, if desired, also be varied by changing somewhat the position of the slider on the slide fasi tener, though its normal and preferred position is about at the waist of the figure.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appeanmy invention consists in the figure and slide fastener a' elements and their relation one to the other, as
hereinafter are more particularly described in the specification and sought to be defined in the claims. The specification is accompanied by a drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a front elevation of a figure embodying features of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken in the plane of the line 3--3 of Fig. 2,
Referring to the drawing, the figure comprises a leg portion l2, a trunk portion M, arm portions I6, and ahead I8. This figure is combined with a slide fastener which may be of con- 0 'ventional type in that it includes fabric tapes E@ larly with non-metallic elements. The elements form a decorative line or stripe down the fron of the ligure.
The slide fastener further includes a slider 2&1k
which may be provided with any desired type of ornament or iingerpiece. In the present case, the slider carries avery short length of spherical link chain 2t with a somewhat enlarged ball 28 at the lower' end thereof.
The slider lis preferably disposed about at the waist of the figur-e. The slide fastener thus is only partially closed, and the part `above and beyond the slider is open. The open or separated branch' es of the slide fastener extend divergently upwardly in front of the upper trunk portion of the figure to the shoulders 32. The separated portions of the slide fastenerpreferably extend not only to, but around the shoulders at each side of the neck, and then downwardly in back of the lgure, as is clearly shown at 34 in Fig. 2. The downwardly extending parts vare preferably brought convergingly together, and the ends are overlapped, `as is indicated in broken lines at 36 in Fig. 1, the crossed ends being secured to the back of the figure as by means of a staple 38.
The length of the slide fastener is preferably so selected in relation to the dimensions of the figure that the overlapped or crossed ends of the tape are devoid of fastener elements, the elements terminating at the upper limit of the overlap of the tapes, as is indicated at the point 40 in Fig. 2. In effect, the elements continue to, and the tapes cross about at, the waist of the ligure.
, The ligure is preferably, though not necessarily, made of Wood. It is made up of three parts, there being a base part B, which is made out of turned Wood, an intermediate or ligure part generally designated F which is cut out of a flat y piece of wood, and a top part generally desiglofi to simulate the vhead I8 and also a military hat 42. f-
The ligure portion F is joined tothe basev and top v portions in any suitable manner. This is preferablydone by providing thepart F withupwardly late a nose. A piece of quarter-round molding 5i) may be cemented on the base just in front of the figure to conceal the connection between the ngure and the base, as well as the lower ends of the fastener.
The figure is suitably ornamented or painted independently of the slid-e fastener. In one speciiic case, the base Bis painted black, the figure F is painted red, and the hat l2 is painted black. The stripes 52 on the sleeves, the epauiets 5d at the extremities of the shoulders, the collar stripes 55, as well as the coat stripe 58, are painted in gold. The features on the head, other than the nose, are merely painted on the cylindrical surface of the head. The tassel or ornament 69 on the hat is painted thereon. The chin strap B2 of the hat may also be painted, but in the specific case here shown consists of a thin strip of goldcolored paper which is cemented to the sides of the head and which is folded or bent to pass beneath the bottom of the head or simulated chin.
With the very few and very minor exceptions noted, the decoration of the figure is entirely by painting, except, of course, for the fact that the complete figure is then dressed by a single piece of externally applied simulated clothing, this beingrnerely a slide fastener of conventional character, as has already been explained. In` the specific case heretofore described, the tapes of the slide fastener' are gray in color, and the fastener elements and slider are gold in color. Thus, there is a striking and attractive contrast in color between the gray fab-ric parts of the uniform and the red painted parts of the uniform. By
applying a slide fastener of diiferent color, a
simulatedly differently uniformed soldier is readily made. In this way, a child playing with a supply of the gures as toys may divide the same into groups constituting, for example, a blue army, and a gray army, and so on.
The appearance of the figure' may be changed somewhat by raising or lowering the slider 2li. For display purposes, I think it preferable to fix the location of the slider 213, and this is readily done by driving two small nails or brads into the figure, one directly above and the other directly below the slider. For display purposes, where the slide fastener need not be detachably related to the figure, it is also possible and even preferable to secure the slide fastener to the figure by cementing the tapes directly to the figure. The particular example of the invention shown in the drawing was intended primarily for display or advertising purposes, and for 'that reason, a part of the otherwise circular base B is cut away to for-'in a flat front surface 6d on which appropriate advertising matter may be placed. For advertising purposes, a Whole row of figures may be used, each'carrying another example of the slide fastener, thus illustrating different colors of tape, different colors and types of fastener elements, and different forrns of decorative ngerpieces on the sliders.
It is believed that the construction, as well as the varied uses of my improved toy gure or display figure, will be apparent from the foregoing detailed description thereof. It will also be' apparent that while I have shown and described my invention in a preferred form, many changes and modifications may be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention defined in the following claims.
