Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRI7 STEELE, OF JERSEY CITY, NEXV JERSEY.
UMBRELLA.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 21,855, dated October 19, 1858.
Be it known that I, HENRY STEELE, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 being a view of a portion of the handle of an umbrella provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section thereof, in the plane indicated by the line .fr m, Fig. l, and exhibit-ing my improvement applied; Fig. 3, a corresponding section, and showing the improvement as not applied; Figs. 4, 5, and 6, views exhibiting details of the improvement.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My improvement consists in the combination of a lock with the closing catch of an umbrella, so that when the umbrella is locked, it can only be opened by the possessor of the key; it will thus be rendered useless to others, and one means to preserve it will be secured.
The lock may be of any convenient or desirable construction; and is applicable to the ordinary umbrella.
A cheap and suitable lock is made in the manner represented in the drawings. A tube F, is inserted into a hole formed in the end of the handle A, of the umbrella, and the knob E, is fitted over the end of the handle and tube, so as to keep the latter in place, and, at the same time, allow it to turn therein, as represented. A notch d, is made in one side of the tube, under the position of the projection a, of the closing catch D, of the umbrella; so that when said notch is turned around opposite to the projection, the latter may sink into it, and allow the catch to be pressed in, and the umbrella be opened; but when said notch is turned away from the projection (L, the tube prevents the depression of the catch, and thereby the opening of the umbrella. In order to turn the tube to different positions for locking or unlocking, a bar f, may be secured across the outer end of the tube: and a key G, (provided with a notch g, in the end, as seen in Fig. 6,) inserted through an aperture or key-hole c, in the knob or handle of the umbrella, so as to couple with said bar f, as seen in Fig. 4.
Other forms of connection between the key and tube or lock may be used, different shapes or constructions requiring a variety of keys, in the usual manner of locks.
that I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a lock with the closing catch of an umbrella, for the purpose specified. n
The above specification of my improved umbrella lock, signed by me this fifteenth day of July, 1858.
