510 rather unsightly appearance and, as the -avor is lost as quickly in the large amount of gum as in the smaller amount, many persons prefer to chew only part of a. stick at a time. Consequently, as a matter of convenience, only half 15 of a stick is used;. this is usually obtained by tearing in two pieces one of the ordinary, wrapped sticks. The remaining half stick, if it is to be preserved,must be placed in the pocket,

or hand bag, until it is to -be put to use. This is,v

objectionable, rst, the open stick of gum may soil the pocket, or items in handbags, and secondly, it quite often picks u p materials which adhere to' the vexposed gum.

In considering a diierent packaging for gum, however, it becomes evident that a change in the general type of. package will bring about a great inconvenience and loss, particularly in the vending machine business, and, secondly, in the better types of stores where display and dispensing cabinets are already provided for the.

commonlyaccepted types of gum packages.

As a solution for this problem I have provided a new package for gum consisting of a plurality of half sticks, individually wrapped, and so arranged under a single wrapper that the general proportions and size of the ordinary gum package is retained, yet is so arranged that the enclosing wrappers ofthe package can easily be removed.

This, in turn calls for a special packaging, or arrangement, of the enclosing wrapper which 1 produces my duplex package.A In this I provide means for opening the outer covering of my package with a convenient'tearing strip in which the tape providing the tearing medium serves to hold the outside wrappers of the individual sticks definitely in place until the outside wrapper is removed.

The principal object cf my present invention, therefore, is to provide a duplex package in which with the maximum convenience and with'the minimum opportunity for contamination of the gum, I provide a 'serving of a size most readily acceptable tothe average user.

A further object of my present invention is\to ggprovide means i'orinitially, hermeticallysealjig (ci. ser-iso) a gum package, which may be easily divided into two separate packages, in which all the reduced size sticks'are still provided with a completely enclosing cover and outer wrapper for holding the cover in place. l

Referring to the drawings, throughout which like reference characters indicate like parts, I6

5 designates my gum stick. 'This I form of suhstantially the same cross section as the conventional gum stick, but instead of being the length normally sold, I prefer that it shall be approximately one-half of that length. This. size, it l has been proved, is most acceptable to the average user, not causing breaking, folding or biting off, since it is a convenientsize to putin the mouth. Each stick I6 is individually wrapped in an, inner cover as I8; this wrapper should be l made of material normally employed for this purpose. In Figure 8 I have shown, in dashed line, the lines upon which the folds are made. When the inner wrapper I8 is in place the appearance of the stick is shown in Figure 9 which will illustrate clearly,` it is believed, the method of folding wrapper I8 thereon.

The next operation is to place on the wrapped' stick, the outer wrapper, or binder, 20. This binder, when. in place after the showing of Figure I0, completes the individual sticks wrapping and follows more or less conventional lines in that the width of wrapper 20 is appreciably less than the over all length of stick I6 so that when it is desired to open one such stick, the

wrapper 20 may be grasped and the stick, with its inner wrapper, shoved endwise` within the outer wrapper after the normal practice so as to most easily unwrap the stick.

In producing a retail `package I abut a plurality of sticks I6 after the showing of Figure 11.

This provides a considerable gap in the wrappers 20 at the center of the package owing to .the fact that we now have double the end space v of one stick.

Around the package shown in Figure 11 I next provide the inner package wrapper shownin Figure 12. This may consist of two half-wrappers as 22 and 24 which are joined together as by tape 26. For this purpose any suitable tape l may be used; however, that made after the' order of the 'so-called Scotch to be highly satisfactory. serves a dual purpose in member for portions 22 and 24 and also to reinforce the package at its center where it is normally weakeneddue to the fact that covers 20of the individual sticks, stop somewhat bcfore reaching the center lineof the` package. 'Ihe exact position of the various wrappers will probably be best understood froml a study of 'Figures 2 and 5. Cover- 28' shown in Figure 14 is normally made oi transparent, cellulose material typical of which is "Cellophane and in order to start a tearing of the cover it has been found desirable to score or, preferably, slit the material slightly as at 30, after which it has been found that the material will tear very 1| readily. providing a joining With certain types of covering and for a certain market it may be desirable to provide the inner covering shown in Figure 12 as a single sheet having very short slits similar to those of sheet 28; when this is done vthe tape 26 should i rest on the individual stick covering using a non-adhesive tape, or using an adhesive tape, such as the so-called Scotc tape, the tape is applied to the inside surface of the single sheet as is illustrated in Figures 6 and 7, so that 10 when it is desired to openrthe package, tape 26 will provide the parting or tearing medium for both the inner wrapper of the main package and the outer wrapper or envelope. In either form of wrapping, however, the outward appearl5 ance of the package will be as illustrated in Figure 1, in which an end of tape 26 will extend out of the package from under the wrapping so that it may be conveniently grasped; or if found more convenient for machine adaptation, with m the use of a single inner sheet a hole may be punched in the outer wrapper through which the tape will extend.

Method of operation u In opening a package of gum, wrapped after the` teachings of my present invention, I find a very convenient position to be that illustrated in Figure 3 wherein the packageitself is grasped as illustrated so that it can revolve in the hand. 30 The end of tape 26 is then grasped by the free hand, and, as itis pulled and the package itself permitted to revolve, the outer wrapper, or envelope, and the inner main package wrapper will be parted at the center of the package so 35 as to provide the two half packages as illustrated inFigure 4. Each of these packages will contain. a plurality of sticks each with its own completely enclosing wrapper. Each of the two half packages'will be -a compact, stable unit either 40 of winch may be carried in the pocket with reasonable assurance that the sticks will not become dislodged even after one of the same has been removed from the half package. In so forming a package, aside from the convenience 45 of giving the consumer a stick of suitable size,

it provides an easy means of dividing a package of gum. This is of considerable advantage when a couple may wish to divide a package or where it is desirable to divide gum for children 50 or the like.

It will be apparent it is believed that once the duplex` package has been parted so as to produce the two half packages the individual sticks may then be removed in the normal man 55 ner.

While I have confined my description and illustration throughout this specification to packaging of gum, it is believed it will be apparent that this form of packaging might be applied 30 to many other products even aside from confections and gum. Y

The foregoing description and the accompanying drawings are believed to clearly disclose a preferred embodiment of my invention but it'cs will be understood that this disclosure is merely illustrative and that such changes in the invention may be made as are fairly within the scope -and spirit of the following claims.

Having thus fully described my invention. what 70 I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1 1.
