Description

` A iomeys Oct. 8, l94. s. D. TRovlLLo Filed Jan. 19, 1939 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 nvenor n. llll l' lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll Il Byav? anni Patented Oct. 8, 1940 UNITED STATES analisi PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to mattresses, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which includes a plurality of units each of mattress construction and all of said units being yieldably and detachably connected to form a complete mattresses, whereby the units will be self-adjusting to each other and normally held in snug engagement and which will permit easy separation of the units to facilitate handling, cleaning and sunning of the lmattress and to allow any one of the units to be reversed or removed for the purpose of being replaced by a like unit if need should be necessary for such a replacement.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. Y
lFor a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to thek following description and' accompanying drawings. in which Figure 1 is a top plan view, partly in section, illustrating a mattress constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional viewillustrating the mattress and the various units thereof.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary exploded sectional view showing the yieldable and detachable connection between the units of the mattress.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral i indicates in entirety the mattress which includes in its construction a plurality of units 6, each in itself of mattress construction, consisting of layers of padding material 1, inner springs 8 and a ticking or covering 9.
Built into each unit 6 is a frame construction I0, some of the inner springs 8 passing therethrough and other of said springs bearing thereon. The frame further includes tubular portions II in which are housed coil springs I2. A bar I3 is connected to certain ends of the coil springs while a split sleeve Il is connected to 5 the other ends of the springs. The bar I3 has integral therewith stems or shanks "I5 which enter the tubular portionsII and have the ends of the springs secured thereto. The split sleeve Il has the Shanks or stems I8 integral therewith which extend into the tubular portions II andv `have the other ends of the springs secured there- 'The length of the units s form the width or the mattress when said units are assembled together, as shown in Figure 1, and the bars I3 and vsplit sleeves are arranged transversely of the mattress l. 'I'he bars Il are slidably received within the split sleeves for yleldably and detachably connecting the units 6 in mattress formation. The tension of the springs I2 is such as to draw the units i into tight engagement with each other to hold the mattress 5 properly assembled. However, under manual force the springs I2 may yield permitting a partial `separation of the units suilicient to permit the bars I3 to be slid out of l the split: sleeves and thereby detach the units from each other. By detaching the units permits the mattress to be more readily handled or carriedfrom one place to another for the purpose of cleaning, sunning or the like and-also will 1| allow reversal of the units relative to each other and the replacement of any one of the umts with a like unit when neecssary. l
While I have shown and described each unit as being of the inner spring' type, it is to be un- 20 derstood that the units may also be constructed in accordance with other types of mattress construction. In either case each unit will have the frame therein.
If desired, the bars I3 and split sleeves may be 2| tages of this invention to those skilled in'the'art 3| to which such a device relates, so that further detailed description will not be required.
WhatIclaim is: .I v 1. A mattressy comprising a plurality of units each of mattress construction, frames mounted in said units and including tubular portions, coil springs lying in said tubular portions, bars connected to certain ends of said coilsprings, land split sleeves connected to the other ends of the coil springs to receive said bars whereby the units are detachably and yieldably connected to form the mattress, said bars and sleeves being arranged exteriorly of the units and transversely to the axes of the springs. A
2. In d device of the class described, plurality 5 of mattress sections each including inner springs, y padding engaging said springs and a covering for the padding and springs, frames arranged in the mattress sectionsv with certain of the springs bearing thereon and including tubular portions, u
other suitable 30 coil springs lying in said tubular portions, and separable fasteners connecting the coil springs to yeldably and detachably connect the mattress sections.
3. In a device of the class described, a plurality of mattress sections each including inner springs, padding engaging said springs and a covering for the padding and springs, frames arranged in the mattress sections with certain of the springs bearing thereon and including tubular portions, coil springs lying in said tubular portions, sleeves secured to certain ends of the coil springs, and bars connected to the other ends of the coil springs and received in the sleeves to detachably connect the mattress sections.
