This invention relates to containers and has particular reference to an improved container composed of a plurality of interfitting sections which are so constructed and arranged that the 5. same may be readily assembled and secured together so as to provide .a strong, durable and serviceable cabinet or chest.
The invention comprehends a container of the character described which is of the knock-down or collapsible type whereby the same may be arranged into flat compact form for storage and shipment and which when assembled into set up relation provides a cabinet or chest for the storage of clothing or other articles.
The invention further comprehends a container including similar end sections and an intermediate body section fashioned from lightweight sheet material to form the walls thereof and with rigid elements formed with longitudinal grooves within which the marginal edges of the end walls and the longitudinal edges of the front wall are arranged and which rigid elements have interfitting engagement when the container is in assembled set-up condition.
The invention also provides a sectional container of the character described in which the rigid elements of the end sections telescopically engage over the free ends of the body section and interfit with the rigid elements thereof which 30 have endwise abutting engagement with the walls of the end sections.
The invention also includes means engaging over the edges of the walls of the end sections and secured within the grooves of the rigid elements thereof for engagement with the walls of the intermediate section for fastening the sections together in assembled set-up condition.
The invention further includes in a container of the character described, bracket means secured within the grooves of the rigid elements of the upper end section for supporting adjacent the end wall thereof a hanger .and an asorbent pad adapted to receive insect repellent material.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which there is illustrated the preferred embodiment thereof.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a collective perspective view of a container constructed in accordance with the invention and illustrating the sections thereof in separated juxtaposition.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 22 of Fig. 3.
PATENT OFFICE Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional viewtaken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 44 of Fig. 3 with the bail shown in side elevation.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the interior upper portion of the assembled container particularly illustrating the bracket for supporting the garment hanger bail and the absorbent pad and also illustrating one of the fastening elements.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view through one of the fastening elements in applied position taken approximately on the line GB of Fig. 3. 15
Fig. '7 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the fastening elements before the free end portion and spur are bent for coupling the body and end sections together.
Fig. 8 is a similar view illustrating the same after being bent to couple the body and end sections together.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the container is illustrated with its length disposed upright so as to provide a cabinet or closet for suspending garments therein, but the same may be disposed with its length in a horizontal position so as to form a chest for packing or storing articles therein.
As illustrated, the container includes an in termediate section A, an upper end section B and a lower end section C. The intermediate section A is preferably fashioned from a single length of light-weight corrugated cardboard, paperboard or other light-weight stock to form the side walls l0 and H, a rear wall l2 and oppositely disposed inwardly directed front wall portions l3 and IA. The said section further includes oppositely disposed longitudinally extending rigid elements l5 having their opposite outer and inner side faces provided with longitudinally extending grooves 16 and H, the grooves l 6 snugly receiving the free longitudinal edges of the inwardly directed front wall portions I3 and 14 for securing the rigid elements l5 thereto.
A pair of upper and lower overlapping door sections 18 and I9 have their opposite longitudinal edges disposed in the longitudinally extending grooves I! for vertical sliding movement therein. The upper door section I8 preferably includes a light-weight panel 20 and rigid cross bars 2| and 22 secured to the opposite ends thereof and which cross bars are rabbeted at their opposite ends to slidably engage within the grooves IT. The lower door section I9 is also preferably formed of a light-weight panel 23 and a rigid cross bar 24 secured to its lower edge and which cross bar is similarly rabbeted at its opposite ends for longitudinal sliding movement within the grooves IT.
The end sections B and C each includes a rectangular panel 25 of similar light-weight stock which panel is surrounded by a rigid element, such as a marginal frame 23 having its inner face provided with a marginal groove 21 which groove engages over the edges of the panel 25. The said frames have their inner edges pro vided with notches 28, while the rigid members l5 of the intermediate section A have their pposite ends recessed as at 29. The said frames form inwardly directed marginal flanges which telescopically fit over the opposite ends of the walls of the intermediate section A with the notches 28 of the frames 26 interfitting with the recessed ends of the rigid elements I for securing the rigid elements 15 in parallel laterally spaced relation to provide a door opening therebetween. The rigid elements l5 extend the full length of the intermediate section A and have endwise abutting engagement with the panels 25 of the end sections B and C.
Improved fastening elements 30 are provided for securing the sections of the container together which eliminate the necessity of employing rivets or other fastening means. The fastening elements 30 are formed of thin sheet metal stock and each includes a hooked end 3! and an opposite free end 32 which is cut to form a pointed anchoring spur 33. One or more of the fastening elements 30 are provided for each of the side and rear walls at the opposite ends thereof and have their hooked ends 3| located within the grooves 21 of the end frames 26 and which are secured therein by engagement over the edges of the panels 25 with the free inner ends 32 projecting inwardly from the frames and disposed against the inner surfaces 'of the panels 25 when the container is in knock-down condition. The anchoring spurs 33 are adapted to be offset laterally and to pierce and extend through the walls of the intermediate section and to be clinched against the outer surfaces thereof as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 6 of the drawings.
In fastening the sections together, the anchoring spurs 33 are bent inwardly substantially at right angles tothe plane of the panels 25, the free ends 32 are then bent outwardly against the walls of the body section to cause the pointed end of the spurs to pierce the side walls thereof with the terminal of the spurs projecting therethrough which are then clinched over the outer faces of the said walls.
When the container is used as a cabinet or closet, a bail 35 is provided for suspending garment hangers thereon. The bail 35 is provided with side arms 36 having hooked upper ends 31 which engage in slots 38 of a pair of angle brackets 39, the upper terminals of which are each provided with a hooked end 40 located within the groove 21 of the upper frame 25 and embracing the edge of the panel 25.
