A brim I is provided to encircle the head, said brim being formed from two arcuate sections H and II which are hinged together at one end as indicated at I2. The other end of one of the sec- 30 tions (li is provided with a beaded chain 13 engageable with a notched hook M on the section II, thus permitting the device to be opened, easily placed around the head, drawn snugly around the latter and fastened. The hinged end of the section I I is preferably bifurcated as indicated at IE to receive the adjacent end of the section H and I prefer that a pin and slot connection It be provided between these ends of said sections. The opposite end of the section I I a 40 is preferably bifurcated at IT to receive the adjacent end of the section II.

Each of the sections II and I I is provided with an ear shield I8 having a wall I9 for disposition at the outer side of the ear, front and rear walls 45 20 and 2| for disposition in front of and behind the ear respectively, and a top wall 22 to overlie the ear, said top wall being provided with a flexible inward extension 23 to yieldably abut the head directly over the ear. The inner end of this 00 extension is preferably provided with a hem or bead 24 within which a spring wire 25 is disposed, the ends 26 of this wire extending downwardly from the ends of the bead or hem and being connected at 21 with vertical flanges 28 which project 5 inwardly from the front and rear walls 20 and 2 I,

Figure 1 is an elevation showing the shield in said spring wires serving to yieldably hold the inner edges of the extensions 23 against the head. Each section 1 l and I I is formed from a plate 22 of sheet metaLvulcanizedplastic or any other material of such nature that the sections will retain their -shape, and each of said sections is provided on its upper side with a covering 30 of sheet corkor other insulating material which prevents it from absorbing any great amount of heat from the hot air blasts used in drying the hair. 1 A portion 3| of the insulating covering of course extends around the ear shields I8.

Yieldable pads 32 are provided along the inner edges of the sections II and II and the vertical inner edges of the ear shields I8, for yieldable contact with the head, said pads preferably consisting of a major portion 33 of sponge rubber or the like, andinner and outer strips 34 and 35 of sheet cork or other heat insulating material. The plates 29 may well be provided with upstanding flanges 35 along'their inner edges, to which the pads 32 are cemented or otherwise secured, and the portions of these pads which extend along the vertical inner edges of the ear shields I9 may be suitably secured to the above described flanges 28.

Spring fingers 3'! or other suitable devices are provided upon the upper sides of the sections II and I I to hold paper tissue 38 in place around the padded inner edges of said sections, for sanitary purposes, it being understood that the tissues are to be changed each time the device is used. While only two fingers 31 have been shown, positioned on the front portions of the sections II and H it will be understood that similar fingers could be provided at other locations if desired. 5

From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that novel and advantageous provision has been made for carrying out the object of the invention, and while preferred features of construction have 40 been illustrated, attention is again invited to the possibility of making variations within the scope of the invention as claimed.

I claim:

1. A shield comprising a head-encircling brim having upstanding shields to ext-end over the ears, said shields having outer wall portions for disposition at the outer sides of the ears, front and rear portions for disposition in front of and behind the ears respectively, and top portions to overlie the ears, the lower ends of said shields being open to receive the ears when said brim is lowered into position around the head, the inner edge of said brim and the inner edges of said front and rear shield portions being provided with an elastic cushion to abut the head and adaptvitself to the shape thereof, said top portions being flexible at least at their inner edge portions, and spring means connected with and extending along said flexible portions to hold them against the head.

2. A shield comprising a head-encircling brim consisting of two arcuate shape-retaining sections hinged together at one end, a beaded chain secured to the other end of one of said sections, and a notched hook secured to the corresponding end of the other of said sections, said beaded chain and notched hook being cooperable in securing the brim around heads of different sizes.

3. A shield comprising a head-encircling brim of a width to project outwardly from the head. said brim having an inner edge portion to abut the head, and means on the upper side of said brim for holding a paper or other sanitary covering in substantially fiat form upon said upper side when a portion of said covering is placed around said inner edge portion of said brim.

4. 'A shield comprising a head-encircling brim consisting of two separate arcuate sections, said sectionsbeing suiiiciently stiff to retain their shape, a pivot hinging said sections together at one end for relative opening and closing movement, and means for adjustably connecting the other ends of said sections with each other.

5. A shield comprising a head-encircling brim consisting of two arcuate shape-retaining sections, the frontend of one of said sections being provided with spaced top and bottom portions between which the front end of the other section is slidably received, the rear end of one of said sections being also provided with spaced top and bottom portions between which the rear end of the other section is slidably received, and means for connecting the slidably engaged ends of said sections with each other.

6. A shield comprising a head-encircling brim consisting of two separate arcuate shape-retaining sections, one end of one section being overlapped with a corresponding end of the other section, a pivot at the inner edge of said brim hinging said ends of said sections together, connecting means near the outer edge of the brim for holding said overlapped ends against separation, said connecting means including a connecting portion on one of said sections arcuate about said pivot, and a connecting portion on the other of said sections slidably engaged with said arcuate connecting portion, and means for connecting the other ends of said sections with each other.

7. A hair drying shield comprising a substantially horizontal head-encircling brim having upstanding shields to extend over the users ears, said shields having outer wall portions for disposition at the outer sides of the ears, front and rear wall portions for disposition in front of and behind the ears respectively, and top portions to overlie the ears, all of said wall portions extending downwardly from said top portions to said substantially horizontalbrim, the lower ends of said shield-s being open to receive the ears when said brim is lowered into position around the head and to permit the user to hear readily while using the shield.

8. A shield comprising a head-encircling brim having upstanding shields to extend over the ears, said shields having outer wall portions for disposition at the outer sides of the ears, front and rear portions for disposition in front of and behind the ears respectively, and top portions to overlie the ears, the lower ends of said shields being open to receive the ears when said brim is lowered into position around the head and to permit the user to readily hear while using the shield, said top portions being flexible at least at their inner edge portions, and spring means connected with and extending along said flexible portions to hold them against the head.
