Description
0. PEDERSON. Furniture-Caster.
Patented Dec. 30, 1879.
0% Jaw/k NITED TATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLE PEDERSON, OF JOLIEI, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FURNlTURE-CASTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,l65, datcd December 30, 1879; application filed January 20, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLE PEDERSON, of Joliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have made a new and useful Improvement in Furniture-Casters; and I hereby declare that the following description is suflicient to enable any one skilled in the art to which it most nearly appertains to construct and use my said invention without further invention or experiment, reference beinghad to the drawings hereunto annexed, in which- Figure 1 is a general sectional view, show ing my caster as applied to the leg of an ordinary table. Figs. 2 and 3 are detached detail views of the same; Fig. 4, section at H I.
My invention relates to the common self-adjusting furniture-caster,too well known to require any description here, the object of my said invention being to furnish a device for a caster combining economy and simplicity in construction with durability as to resistance of wear and strain, freedom of action, and facility and security in its manner of attachment to the article upon which it is to be used, and relating more particularly to the shell.
My invention consists in so dividing the pod or metal shell in which the vertical pivot (J rotates that the step E, upon which it has hearin g, instead ot'bein g divided through the center thereof, as is usually the case, is cast entire upon the half E. over which the concave surface of the opposite halt, D, tits when both are placed in relative positions together. Said step is elongated sui'liciently to form abody of metal to hold screw D, the use of which will be described hereinafter.
c is a small lug upon step 19, which, engaging with the corresponding hole (1 in D, serves, in conjunction with lip d and its corresponding notch e, to hold the two halves in position when both are placed together.
(I and c are two lugs on inner surface of each half, which, engaging with the groove in pivot G, serve to keep, the same from dropping out when raised from the floor.
G is a washer or disk, which, when the two halves of the shell are placed together, is
slipped over the outside, holding them firmly and resting upon the conical collar orfiange J, thus forming the support for the leg of the article to which it is applied.
1 is a lug upon the inner circumference of the washer, which engages with a slot, h, formed by cutting away one edge of half D, and prevents its turning upon the shell. Thus when a pin-wrench is applied to the holes g g and notch g, the whole may be turned, and by screw I) securely and quickly screwed into place. It will thus be seen that all that is necessary to do in inserting the caster is, first, to bore a hole of a diameter nearly or about equal to the outside diameter of the shell. Should it happen to be somewhat larger, paper may be wrapped about the shell until the extra space is fairly filled.
The depth of hole should be about equal to the distance from the upper face of washer Gr to root of screw D, the point of which is then inserted in the opening made by center of bit with which the hole is bored. Ihe whole is then screwed inward until washer G rests upon the wood firmly, the face of which,
of necessity. need not be square with axis of pivot G, as the washer has sufficient play to allow it to adjust itself to difierent positions.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a furniture-caster, the step E, made entire and solidly attached to the half-shell E, and elongated to hold screw D, substantially as described.
2. Screw D and divided shell having slot h and flange J, in combination'with disk G, having lug g, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The divided shell consisting of part D, having lip 01 and hole at, in combination with part E, having step E, lug c, and notch e,
substantially as described.
OLE PEDERSON.
WVitnesses CHARLES WM. STAEHLE, FRANCIS H. TREAT.
