BooKHOLDER Filed June l2.' 1959 [n venor omcgs Patented Mar. 18, 12941* UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to bookholders and has for its primary object to provide a book rack adapted to support a book in an open position and providing an adjustable arm removably secured in a clamp device for attaching the holder in a suitable position to a bedstead, lamp or other support, to hold the book in a comfortable position for reading purposes.
A further object is to provide a bookholder of this character lin which a swingably supported arm is provided for horizontal swinging movement, also providing means for adjusting the holder vertically or horizontally toward or away from the supporting structure. k
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, strong and durable, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the bookholder in position for supporting a book thereon.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the device in a folded position and enclosed within a container.
Referring now to the drawing in detail and with particular reference to Figure 1, the numeral 5 designates a U-shaped clamping member adapted for fitting over the upper edge portion of a bedstead, as shown by the dotted lines at 6 and having a clamping screw 1 threaded through the rear of the clamping member for securing the clamping member in a desired position.
At the front side of the clamping member is a socket 8 having vertical and horizontal openings 9 and Il) respectively, formed therein and adapted for removably receiving the angularly arm being adapted for horizontal swinging movement when inserted in the vertical openings 9 of the socket. The arm I2 is formed of strap metal and has a bolt and wing nut I3 extending transversely thereof at its outer end, said bolt being inserted through -a slotted opening I4 formed in an extension arm I5, the extension I5 being adapted for slidable adjustment longitudinally with respect to the arm I2, or the extension may be moved into a vertical position and adjusted vertically at the outer end of the arm.
The outer end of the extension I5 is also provided with a bolt and wing nut I6 on which is suspended a hanger II, having a longitudinal bent inner end II of a supporting arm I2, the
slotted opening I9. A U-shaped hook supporting spring clip 20 is provided at one end with a bolt and wing nut I8 positioned in the slot I9 to secure the clip in adjusted position on the hanger Il. At the upper end of the member 20 is a pin 2l on which is pivotally supported one end of a pair of arms 22-22, the opposite ends of the arms extending downwardly and laterally with respect to the member 2B and are provided at the lower ends thereof with upstanding rods 23-23 pivotally mounted at their lower ends to the lower ends of the arms 22 by pins 24. The upstanding end of the member 20, as well as the rods 23-23 are of resilient material and are curved outwardly to facilitate insertion of the book behind the same.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that a book may be supported upon the member 20 in an open position and with the leaves of the book inserted between the arms 22 and upstanding rods 23 at the opposite sides of said member 20. The book may thus be `conveniently adjusted toward or away from its supporting structure, or may be swung horizontally into a desired position.
The members 20, 22, 23 and the hanger I'I may be collapsed and swung inwardly on the bolt IB in substantial parallelism with respect to the arm I2 and extension I5 and in such position may be enclosed within a cylindrical container 25 on the inner end of which is tted a cap 26 having a central opening 21 through which the angular inner end II is inserted, whereby the container will enclose the holder in its folded position in a manner as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing.
It is believed the details of construction and manner and use of the invention will be readily understood from .the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is A bookholder adapted to be suspended from the head of a bed or the like comprising a hanger bar adapted to be arranged in upstanding position, a U-shaped spring clip of elongated form and bar-like metal endwise slidable on said hanger bar longitudinally thereof into dilerent set positions, said clip -depending from said bar and being adapted for clamping an open book therein, a. pair of bars depending from the upper end of said clip downwardly and outwardly therefrom upon opposite sides thereof, respectively, for supporting the back of the book and terminating in laterally curved lower ends for supporting the lower edge of said book, and a pair of resilient rods upstanding from the curved ends of the-pair of bars for bearing against the leaves of the book in front thereof.
