clothes in place.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a covering for beds or mattresses which is inexpensive to manufacture, easily placed on a bed or mattress and removed therefrom, and which will keep the occupant of the bed covered v while permitting freedom of movement.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the drawing, which forms a part of this specification and wherein like characters of reference denote like parts throughout- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mattress having the present invention applied thereto,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, on the line 2-4 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, I
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the coverlet before being applied to the mattrms, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary detail perspective view of a modified form of neckline.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral Ill designates a mattress for use on a bed, cot or crib. A pad Ii extends the full length of the mattress on the under side thereof, and may be of any suitable material such as canvas, which is suiliciently heavy for the purpose and washable.
A sheet I! of any suitable material is adapted to be removably fastened along its side edges to the side edges of the pad H from the foot end of the pad to a point adjacent but spaced from the head end thereof. Any suitable fastening means may be employed. In the drawing, talon or ripper" fasteners I! are secured to the edges ofpad ll andsheet llandoperatedbytheusual movable key member II. The sheet I! extends below the foot end of the pad and of the mattress to form an overhanging flap II which may be tucked imder the foot end of the mattress and removablysecuredtotheundersideofthepad by suitable fasteners or pins it. The head end and gathered or shirred, an elastic tape il being disposed between the doubled portion of the sheet transversely thereof. When a child or other occupant is lying on the mattress, the elastic tape or band II will hold the sheet in position under his neck or armpits. The gathered portion of the sheet permits stretching of the tape In place of the doubled sheet end and tape ll disposed therebetween, a strip or tape ll of suitable elastic material such as Lastex" may be sewed directly to the underside of the gathered top of the sheet, as shown in Figure 5.
The sides of the sheet I! are reinforced at It to support the fasteners i3 without tearing the sheet. An elastic band I! is secured to the reinforcement It at each side of sheet [2, exteriorly of the sheet and extends above the sheet adjacent the head end thereof. A similar elastic band I9 is disposed adjacent the foot end of the sheet and secured to reinforcements. I 8. Tapes l9 and I9 may be of any suitable elastic or resilient material, and may be covered with ribbon or cloth if desired. In use, blankets or additional covers 20 may be disposed over sheet I: and under tapes I 9 and 19' to be held in place by said tapes. As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the head ends of covers 20 may be folded back over tape l9. It will be seen that tapes I! and i! will securely hold the covers 20 to the sheet i2, and that any desired numbers of covers 2| may be held by the tapes. In place of elastic tapes, ribbons may be secured to each side of the sheet and tied above the sheet, but elastic tapes are more readily handled.
Fasteners it may be omitted and the weight of the mattress relied upon to hold flap IS in place. By operating keys ll, the sheet I! may be completely removed from pad ii for laundering, and a new sheet secured to the pad. The gathered head end of the sheet permits a comfortable, close fit at the head of the-sheet while the fasteners i3 extending to the-foot of the mattress prevents displacement of any part of the covers by the occupant. The elastic tapes i9 and I! bring the other covers into the coverlet to form a part thereof. It will be seen, there fore, that the fasteners l3, gathered resilient head portion of the sheet I: and the straps or tapes l8 and i8 insure proper covering of the occupant at all times without discomfort.
An important feature of the present construction is that the sheeti2 and pad II are independent of the mattress, and may be easily reof the sheet I2 is preferably doubled upon itself 5 moved and replaced. or applied to other mattresse's. Various materials may be used for the several parts, as desired, and other types of fasteners than that shown may be employed.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a mattress, of a pad adapted to be disposed beneath the mattress, a sheet adapted to be disposed above the mattress, means to fasten the edges of the sheet and pad froma point adjacent the head end of the sheet to a point adjacent the foot end thereof, said sheet being shirred at its head end, means resiliently urging the shirred end of the sheet towards the mattrus, and a tape secured to opposite sides of the sheet and extending transversely across the sheet and mattress to retain covers disposed above said sheet.
2. The combination with a mattress, of a pad adapted to be disposed beneath the mattress, a sheet adapted to be disposed above the mattress, said sheet being reinforced at its side edges, interlocking fastening members secured to the reinforced side edges of the sheet and the side edges of the pad and adapted to detachably connect the sheet and pad for substantially the full length of the sheet, said sheet being gathered at its head end, an elastic member associated with the gathered end of the sheet and resiliently urging it towards the mattress, and spaced resilient bands secured to the opposite reinforced edges ofthe sheet and extending transverselyacross the sheet to engage and hold covers disposed above the sheet and beneath the bands.
3. The combination with a mattress, ot a pad adapted to be disposed beneath the mattress, a sheet adapted to be disposed above the mattress, said sheet being reinforced at its side edges, interlocking fastening members secured to the reinforced side edges of the pad and adapted to detachably connect the sheet and pad for the greater part of the length of the sheet, said sheet extending beyond the foot end of the pad to form a flap adapted to be tucked under the foot of the mattress, said sheet being gathered at its head end, an elastic member associated with the gathered end of the sheet and resiliently urging it towards the mattress, 'and resilient bands disposed adjacent the head and foot end of the sheet and secured to the opposite reinforced edges of the sheet to extend transversely across the sheet and engage and hold covers disposed above the sheet and beneath the bands.
4. The combination'with a mattress, of apad adapted to be disposed beneath the mattress, a sheet adapted to be disposed above the mattress, said sheet being reinforced at its side edges, interlocking fastening members secured to the reinforced side edges of the sheet and the side edges of the pad and adapted to detachably connect the sheet and pad for substantially the full length-of the sheet, and spaced resilient bands secured to the opposite reinforced edges of the sheet and extending above and transversely across the sheet to engage and hold covers disposed between the sheet and bands.
