1 Claim. (01. -320) This invention relates to cozys.
The objects of the invention are to provide means for retaining the usual bed coverings in place on a bed, studio couch, or other place of repose; to provide a structure particularly fitted for preventing the covers from being kicked out in the vicinity of the reposing person's feet; to secure the covers not only at' the foot of the bed or the like, but also along the sides in the vicinity of the foot portion; to enable the device to be placed in position during making of the bed and secured over the coverings after a person is in bed if so desired; to enable the device to be opened up so the coverings may be entirely.
thrown back and yet maintain the device ready for immediate use whenthe coverings arereimprovements in bedturned to the made-up condition; to provide a structure which will fit the bed and respond to the natural resiliency of the mattress or the like; to secure simplicity of construction and use; and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed to which my invention has been applied;
Figure 2 is a side view of the cozy substantially in the position it occupies when on a mattress, but with no mattress shown therein;
Figure 3 is a face view of a corner portion of the cozy showing the elastic gusset and interlocking fasteners or zippers; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one forward comer of the underflap.
In the specific embodiment of the invention 11- lustrated in said drawing, the reference numeral Ill indicates in general a bed having box springs H and mattress Ill. The bed is shown as being made up with usual bed coverings I 3, the side and bottom edges of which are understood as tucked in between the spring and mattress. The cozy of the present invention is applied to overlie the bed coverings and extend entirely around the foot portion of the coverin s and mattress.
Said cozy is preferably made up with an under wall l4, side walls l5, top wall It and end or foot wall 11.. The under wall l4 extends forwardly of the side walls, thereby providing a forward flap l8. Preferably the cozy is made from a washablematerial, such as muslin, and a material which will be both flexible and of adequate strength. The several walls and flap are all a detached. However, certain of the walls are ar-' vranged to be separated in order to permit the cozy to be opened and. closed when desired. As here shown, zippers orhookless fasteners l8 mounted on tape 20 are secured along the meeting side and under edges of the top flap, side walls and under wall, the opening of the zipper" commencing at the top forward corner, the slide 23 of the zipper" being adapted to be drawn along the entire top side edge and then down to the bottom of the end edge for a complete opening up of the cozy.
When a bed is to be made up, the under wall It and" flap I8 are extended under the mattress above the springs. Insertion of the same is rend'ered relatively a simple task by providing strap handles 24 at the forward corners of the flap. By gripping these handles the flap and under wall can be pulled to place toward the head of the bed until the foot wall I! has come to its proper position next to the foot of the mattress. The cozy A is brought to the position mentionedwhile it is open and with the walls separated by virtue of the zippers,the top and end walls are merely allowed to drape over the foot of the bed and the side walls J 5 hang down at the side of the bed while the bed coverings are applied and the bed made up as shown. After the coverings have been applied, the top wall is thrown over into place and the side walls raised one at a time and the zippers slid closed thereby causing the cozy to completely encompass the foot portion of the mattress and bedding. 7
In order to accommodate different thicknesses of mattress and to allow for desired play in the cozy so as to afiord room for a person in the bed, I preferably provide an elastic gusset 25 at the forward edge of the side wall. As here shown, the said side wall is hemmed and the elastic 25 is within the hem, said elastic being shorter than the height of the wall, thereby obtaining a shirring of the material under normal conditions.
Restless persons, and delirious persons are apt to loosen the bed coverings and expose their feet at times when they should not, and the present invention is'a great advantage to such persons unitary structure so there is nothing to become in preventing any such uncovering of the feet at times when not desired. Also persons who sleep on studio couches, and other places of repose which do not retain coverings in place very effectively, will find the cozy will overcome the difficulty. The invention is not confined to use by such persons nor on the particular articles of furniture here referred to, and I do not wish to be understood aslimiting myself except as set 2 s -2, 254,42a 'I forth in the following claim when construed 'in thelight of the prior art.
- I claim: e
A bed-cozy comprising side, top and under walls and an end wall, said side wall being sepa- 5 'rable from the top wall and the side walls also being separable from the end wall, and hookless fasteners extending along the separable edges of the side and top walls and continuing downward 1y along the separable edges between the side and 10 end wallsfor securing the separable walls to each other and enabling the top and end walls when released by the hookless fasteners to be thrown g fasteners functioning to secure the separable walls together and form the cozyinto a pocket both at the end and sides of the cozy.
