4 Claims.
The invention includes a canvas which fits over regulation hospital bed mattress and has a body disposal aperture in the center. Steel rods, slip bolt connected at the corners, hold the canvas tight and the whole is supported by a lifting apparatus which is fitted under and to the sides of the bed. It is raised from both sides simultaneously so that the patient may be easily lifted from and lowered to the mattress before and following use of container under aperture. When the canvas with the patient on it is raised, the container is quickly and easily put in place and in this way the patient need not be moved at all.
Fig. I is a side elevation of the device showing the lifting device in raised position.
Fig. II is a section showing the portion of the device at the far side of the bed with the lifting device in lowered position.
In the drawing A represents the side rail of the bed and B is the mattress. Above the mattress and resting thereon when in lowered position is a canvas I with an opening 1'8 in its center. This canvas is stretched on a rectangular frame made up of rods l5 connected at the corners by bolts It. The canvas is attached to the frame by threading the rods through a wide hem at the margin of the canvas.
The lifting apparatus for raising the frame and canvas comprises a pair of extensible posts 9 at each side of the bed, each post 9 consist- 1 ing of a tubular portion and a movable portion slidable therein. The side rods of the canvas supporting frame are connected to the tops of the posts by means of guard members I4 with rollers l3, thus forming a between the posts and the frame. There are openings 22 in the canvas at the corners to facilitate the connection of the rods, and at the connections of the posts with the frame to permit movement of the posts relative to the frame.
The posts on each side of the bed are connected by crossed rods pivoted to the posts and to each other by pivots 8. Each of these rods is connected to the upper end of the slidable portion of one post and at its lower end to the lower portion of the tubular part of the other post. Thus when the posts are moved toward each other the rods, by a about the central pivot 8, causes an upward movement of the slidable portions of the posts and thus raises the attached frame. The posts are provided with rollers l0 resting on the floor and rollers H connected to the posts by clamps i2 and which rest on the bed rail, and these together with the rollers 13 tend to reduce noise freely slidable connection scissor-like movement and friction when the posts are moved relative to the bed and the frame in the operation of the device. The posts at each side of the bed are further connected by a member 6 extensible like the posts to permit movement of the posts toward and from each other- The parts of the lifting device on opposite sides of the bed are connected by rods l9 which pass under the bed.
To assist in urging the posts toward each other and to retain the device in elevated position there is provided at each side of the bed an angle lever 2 connected at one end by a pivot 5 to a collar I! on the tubular portion of the member 6. This angle lever rests on a roller 4 on the post to which the slidable part of member 6 is connected. In the lower side of the lever 2 at the angle is a notch adapted to engage the roller 4 to hold the device elevated. At the outer end of lever 2 is a tread 3 by which the lever may be operated by the foot. A rod 20 connects the levers so that they may be operated from either side of the bed.
Additional means may be provided to assist in moving the posts toward each other to elevate the frame.
The operation of the device is apparently clear from the above description.
I claim:
1. An invalid lifting device comprising lifting elements adapted to be positioned on opposite sides of a bed connected for simultaneous operation, each of these elements including two extensib-le supporting standards, each standard comprising a guiding element, a movable element slidable therein, crossed rods pivoted together at a point intermediate their ends for scissor-like movement, the upper and lower ends of the rods being pivoted respectively to the movable and the guiding portions of the standards, the lower ends of the standards being connected by an extensible member like the standards, a frame having a flexible body support stretched thereon attached to the upper ends of the standards, whereby when the standards at each side of the bed are moved toward each other the lifting elements are extended and the frame elevated and means mounted on the device and operable from either side of the bed for urging the standards toward each other.
2. The structure defined in claim 1 in which the means for urging the standards toward each other includes an angle lever pivoted at oneend to the guiding section, the other leg of the angle lever resting against a roller on the standard to which the relatively movable section is connected, a tread at the free end of the angle lever to which pressure may be applied to depress the lever.
3. In combination with a bed, an invalid lifting and supporting device comprising lifting elements on opposite sides of the bed connected for simultaneous operation, each of these elements including two extensible supporting standards, each standard comprising a guiding element and a movable element slidable therein, crossed rods pivoted together at an intermediate point for scissor-like movement, the upper and lower ends of the rods being connected respectively to the movable and guiding portions of the standards, the lower ends of the standards being connected by a member extensible like the standards, each standard having a roller resting on the floor and another resting on the bed rail, a frame extending around the edges of the mattress of the bed 20 and slidably connected to the upper extremities of the standards, a flexible body support stretched on the frame, means mounted on the device and readily operable from either side of the bed for urging the standards on each side of the bed toward each other guided by the extensible connecting member and for retaining the extensible supporting standards in a predetermined position of extension.
4. A device as defined in claim 3 in which the means for urging the standards together includes an angle lever pivoted at one end to one element of the extensible connecting member and the other leg of the angle lever resting against a roller on the standard to which the other element of the connecting member is connected, a tread at the free end of the angle lever to which pressure may be applied to depress the lever.
