3 Claims.
This invention relates generally to the art of interior decorating and is particularly directed to improvements in means for securing the edge portions of rugs linoleum and other floor or wall coverings to the surfaces to be ornamented or protected. More specifically, the invention is directed to a molding strip of the extruded type comprising a body having one or more flanges so disposed as to provide a pocket for the reception of the carpet, linoleum, rubber or other materials to be secured.
The main object of the present invention resides in the provision of a molding strip having a body portion and a flange connected at. one edge thereto,- the flange being curved to provide the same with a claw-like cross section and projected over the body portion to form a longitudinally extending recess for the reception of the carpet, the body portion of the strip beneath the flange having a retaining rib formed therewith which is sharpened at its edge and inclined toward the juncture of the body and flange, the rib being embedded in the carpet when the free edge of the flange is embedded therein by bending the flange toward the body after the carpet is positioned inthe recess.-, .1
Other objectslof the invention reside in forming the flane'efin such manner-as to facilitate the operation'ofbending the same into a carpet securing position, making the body portion greater in width than the flange to expose the means for attaching the strip to the floor andcontinuing the surface of the flange downward to cause it to terminate in close relationship to the floor surface to eliminate shoulders which might trip persons walking over the strip.
With these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel formation of the strip and the relation of the various parts. as
'best illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the strip showing th same in position on asurface and having the edge of a section of carpet gripped thereby;
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view 'of the strip with the edge of the floor covering positioned between the flange and the-body portion of the strip, the flange being in an elevated position prior to the bending operation;
Fig. 3 is a similar view wherein the flange is bent toward the body portion to secure the floor covering in connection with the strip.
'Referring more particularly to the drawing,
the floor covering is to be secured. This surface may be formed from wood orany other material suitable for forming floors or other building walls. Disposed on the surface I is a section of carpet 2 having a backing portion 3 and a nap 4 projecting upwardly therefrom. Secured to the surface I is a section of molding 5 forming the subject matter of the Present invention.
The molding includes a body portion 6 which,
in this instance, has a wedge-like cross section and is provided adjacent the thinner side thereof with openings l through which screws 8 extend to secure the strip to the surface I. A flange 9 projects from the opposite edge of the strip over the body portion at an acute angle, the outer surface of the flange extending downwardly over the side of the body portion and meeting with the under surface to form a relatively sharp an edge l0.
When the strip is secured to the surface I, the sharp edge is disposed in close relation to the surface and since the flange is inclined with respect to the body, a feather edge will be produced which will greatly facilitate the move- *ment offurniture or other objects over the strip.
The-flange 9 is curved and adjacent the outer portion,fthe' degree of curvature is sharply increased to'give the flange a claw-like cross section, the free edge I I of the flange being relatively sharp and directed toward the body portion of the strip. The inner surface of the flange is relieved as at I! adjacent the body portion to permit the flange to be bent downwardly toward the body portion after th edge of the carpet has been positioned in the groove formed by the body 6 and the flange 9.
As illustrated in Fig. 3, the bending operation causes the curved outer edge of the flange to be 40 curled under and a smooth rounded surface l5 will be disposed at the edge of the floornovering 4. The bending operation also causes the sharp .or claw-like edge of the flange to be directed inwardly into the groove. As the edge of the floor covering is positioned between the flange and the body portion, the claw II will be embedded in the floor covering and prevent withdrawal thereof from the groove.
To assist in preventing this withdrawal, the
body portion has a rib l6 formed thereon between the numeral designates the surface to which like cross section, the outer sharp edge of the I rib serving to engage the backing of the floor covering 2. Since the backing is rough, the sharp edge of the ribwill tend to grip the same and prevent outward movement of the floor covering. When the flange is bent downwardly, the distance between the free edge of the rib and the under surface of the flange will be less than the thickness of the fioor covering and the latter will thereby be gripped or pinched therebetween. Since both the claw-like edge of the flange and the barb-like rib are directed inwardly in the groove, the floor covering will be flrmly gripped and prevented from separating from the strip.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that a a molding strip has been provided which is particularly adaptable for use in binding the ends of carpet and rubber runners and securing them to floor or other surfaces.
What is claimed is:
1. An edge molding for securing floor cover-' ings comprising a strip-like body, a curved :flange extending longitudinally of said body and connected at one edge thereto, said flange overhanging said body, the degree of curvature of said flange being increased and the thickness decreased adjacent its free edge to give the flange a claw-like cross section, the point of said claw being directed toward said body, and means formed with said body beneath said flange for engaging and holding floor covering materials positioned between said flange and body, said flange being capable of movement toward said body to force the claw-like edge into holding en-,
gagement with the floor covering resting on said body.
2. An edge molding for securing floor coverings comprising a strip-like body, a curved flange extending longitudinally of said body-and connected at one edge thereto, said flange overhanging said body, the degree of curvature of said flange being increased and the thickness decreased adjacent its free edge to give the flange and toward said rib.
3. An edge molding for securing floor coverings comprising a strip-like body having a wedgeshaped cross section, a curved flange projecting from the thicker edge of said body over said body and at an acute angle thereto, the degree of curvature of said flange being increased adjacent its free edge to give the flange a clawlike cross section, the free edge of said flange being relatively sharp, said flange being less in width than said body, said body having spaced perforations beyond the free edge of said flange, and barb-like means provided between the free and attached edges of said flange, said barb means being inclined away from the thinner edge of said body.
